The work had a tremendous success probably out-rivaling in popularity its prototype. A difficult feature of the book is that two printers. printed copies textually the same page by page with only minor variations in the settings and this coupled with the fact that during the eight or nine years it was being reprinted makes the whole vast output all 'first editions' but with innumerable states and variants that continually overlap one with the other" Abbey. "Originally published in 56 parts on completion the work was issued in boards. Later copies were bound in publisher's cloth. A book full of contrarities and difficulties for the bibliographer there being innumerable variations of the plates. The difficulties are further increased by many copies in modern bindings having been completed or made up of different issues giving combinations that are not true variations" Tooley. Printers: R. Fourth volume in Thomson Burtis's eleven-book Rex Lee Flying Stories written by a WWI Army Air Service pilot. Ships from the USA quickly & w/care. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SYNOPSIS & HISTORY: An antique single-volume hardcover juvenile aviation novel Rex Lee Sky Trailer represents the fourth entry in Thomson Burtis's eleven-volume flying adventure series. Published by Grosset & Dunlap in 1929 the storyline follows daring young aviator Rex Lee as he pilots his biplane into the West Virginia mountains to visit his companion Larry McCrann. Dangers escalate upon discovering two downed aircraft on Mount Baldy thrusting the hero into a bitter political and physical feud between the rival Callhoun and Chatfield mountain families. Partnering with a local physician Rex navigates treacherous mountain updrafts sabotage and aerial dogfights to trail a secretive outlaw across the ridge lines. Bound in mustard-yellow cloth covers with bold black and orange stamped title lettering and biplane cover art the volume features custom pictorial endpapers and a glossy monochrome frontispiece plate. Bibliographical analysis of the dust jacket points to a First Edition First Printing state as the front flap and rear panel advertise series titles strictly through this fourth volume Rex Lee: Ranger of the Sky as title #3 and Sky Trailer as #4 displaying no subsequent titles published later in 1929 or 1930. The original multi-color jacket displays dramatic biplane combat artwork wrapping across the front panel and spine. Thomson Burtis crafted the series directly from his extensive background as a World War I U.S. Army Air Service aviator test pilot and aerial photographer. Unlike many syndicate-produced juvenile series of the era that relied on uncredited ghostwriters Burtis brought authentic cockpit procedures flight mechanics and military air lore to early youth literature. Released during the height of the post-Lindbergh aviation boom the narrative captures interwar American fascination with commercial flying aerial barnstorming and radio technology. Original 1920s Grosset & Dunlap paper dust jackets suffered extreme attrition among young readers leaving surviving jacketed early printings increasingly uncommon. Grosset & Dunlap hardcover

1979176 pages. Index. "When Norman Rockwell was at the height of his career in the late 1940's, he wrote a delightful book called How I Make a Picture. It was the basis for an advanced illustration course at the Famous Artists School, but was never made available to the general public. We are now delighted to have this unique opportunity to make Rockwell's original book available for the first time in an expanded version, containing full-color reproductions of the artists best work along with previously unpublished color sketches." - from Publisher's Note. Vintage science technology textbook. Pierre-Gilles de Gennes's foundational monograph of modern soft matter physics; the author received the 1991 Nobel Prize in Physics. Ships in box from the USA quickly & w/care. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SYNOPSIS & HISTORY: Pierre-Gilles de Gennes's text presents the foundational monograph of modern soft matter physics. The work outlines scaling concepts and self-similarity laws to describe the complex physical conformations and dynamics of long flexible polymer chains. De Gennes's theoretical frameworks draw mathematical analogies between macromolecular behavior and the critical phenomena of phase transitions unifying polymer chemistry with the rigorous principles of statistical mechanics. Tan cloth covers embossed w/ a gold-gilt title on the spine and front cover house the text which is illustrated throughout with black-and-white figures and mathematical diagrams. The publisher's dust jacket features a minimalist geometric design of interlocking circular rings on the front panel and carries catalogs for Cornell University Press's chemistry lectureships on the rear panel. A previous owner signature on the front free endpaper provides a provenance link to Wake Forest University biophysicist and Professor of Physics George Holzwarth. Having pioneered research in macromolecular dynamics polymer physics and DNA gel electrophoresis Holzwarth's ownership connects this volume directly to the active scientific community that applied de Gennes's scaling equations during the textbook's initial 1979 release. Cornell University Press first published the volume in Ithaca New York in late 1979. Pierre-Gilles de Gennes who subsequently received the 1991 Nobel Prize in Physics for his generalizations of order phenomena in complex matter composed the work as a synthesis of contemporary polymer theories. The publication date coincided with rapid developments in neutron scattering and light spectroscopy experiments which validated de Gennes's scaling equations. Cornell University Press hardcover
