ref. 51-7299Paris: Jean-Jacques Pauvert 1955. 4to. 19 x 26.8cm. 69.pp Original wraps. Founded by Eric Losfeld–who went on to publish Jean-Claude’s notorious Barbarella comics in the early 1960s–Bizarre lasted for just two issues before falling off the map in 1953. The magazine was soon revived however by Jean-Jacques Pauvert and Michel Laclos who kept its torrent of iconoclastic wit cultural criticism and artistic daredevilry running uproariously from 1955 right up to the eve of the Paris uprisings in the spring of 1968. No stranger to controversy Pauvert made a name for himself in the immediate postwar years publishing at times clandestine editions of Sade. His new bookshop on the Rue Bonaparte was quickly put under police surveillance when it opened in 1956 just a year after he restarted Bizarre and the besieged bookseller/ publisher found himself at the center of the “Affaire Sade” as the French government stepped in to ban the publication and sale of such works. Clashes with authority and public controversy also hounded other contributors to the journal including its ‘s star illustrator Siné. An anarchist with sharply anti-capitalist anti-colonialist and as many would later find anti-semitic views Siné felt pressured to quit his position as political cartoonist for L’Express due to his virulent opposition to the Algerian War which provoked public outcry from many readers and for a time in the early sixties he worked on Révolution africaine a journal financed by the Algerian resistance organization FLN. When the uprisings came in 1968 Siné again joined with Pauvert to found the magazine L’Enragé an important document of the rebellious spirit of the late sixties and early seventies recently acquired by Beinecke as part of the Philippe Zoummeroff Collection of May 1968 Paris / BIZARRE. N° 1. Mai 1955.Expertise by Amaury BONNETAIN Paris: Jean-Jacques Pauvert, 1955. paperback

1958ref. 11447Westerham Kent UK: Privately Printed Westerham Press 1958. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 12mo 31pp. plus back matter. A fine copy in the publisher's thin grey wooden veneer boards with plain white spine. Spine gently and evenly faded but with the gilt still bright. Else very fresh and handsome. To paraphrase from Lane's Foreword the illustrations herein were created for various Penguin trade publications over the previous ten years. Since the thin mass-produced paper cannot give the full flavor of these wood engravings Lane decided to have this little volume made on thicker handmade paper Hosho-Shi from Berrick Brothers in London which does more justice to the engravings. With contributions from Reynolds Stone Cecil Keeling Derrick Harris Imre Reiner Roy Morgan George Buday David Gentleman and Diana Bloomfield. A lovely little book. Laid-in is a Christmas card from H. F. Paroissien who seems to have been a Director at Penguin at the time of publication. Privately Printed [Westerham Press] hardcover

1904ref. 3810London: John F. Shaw 1904. First edition. Publisher's quarter decorated cloth over full-color glazed pictorial boards corners a little worn.Small quarto 9 5/8 x 7 1/8 in; 245 x 180 mm. A few illustrations hand-colored by a child. Closed tear to bottom edge of page. 17. Early ink presentation dated "Christmas 1905" on front paste-down. Illustrated throughout in black and white and color with fifteen drawings by Louis Wain and an unrecorded text drawing by Arthur Rackham so initialed on page 40. Unrecorded and scarce with no copies noted in the Wain or Rackham bibliographies. Anytime an unrecorded book illustration by Arthur Rackham comes to light it's an item for collectors to note. Buried within this book unheralded on page forty is a black and white text illustration of four chickens in various states of distress as they observe in high dudgeon and with no little annoyance a cat within their food bucket chowing down the chicken feed. And at the lower left of the bucket as small as can be are Rackham's initials as typically drawn. Latimore and Haskell and Riall make no mention of this illustration in their Rackham bibliographies and the Arthur Rackham Society expressed no knowledge of it when we inquired. A true scarcity -- a previously unknown Rackham during his transitional period when his fairies and goblins were emerging but had not yet fully vanquished the simple pay-the-bills work of his early years. Arthur Rackham 1867-1939 is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrator of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper 1892. Over the next few years he took on more and more commissions for children's books hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Rackham turned his imaginative pen to every classic-from Shakespeare to Dickens to Poe. Cf. Dale 34 and 35. John F. Shaw unknown
