1892417 pages. Index. Appendices. Footnotes. List of sixty black and white illustrations. A rare surviving copy of this important reference, made all the more engaging by today's environment of competing fiat currency devaluations. "Hitherto Numismatists when stydying the Origines of Coinage had confined themselves to the materials presented to them in the earliest money of Lydia, Greece and Italy, and on the other hand the Metrologists had almost completely limited their range of observation to the systems of Babylon, Egypt, Greece and Rome. As the Comparative Method has yielded such excellent results in the study of other human institutions, I have endeavoured by its aid to get some new principles which may throw some fresh light on the first beginnings of monetary and weight systems." - from Preface. Attractive gilt decoration upon green front board. Legible gilt lettering upon backstrip. Average external soiling and wear. Several chips from and lengthy openings along backstrip which has become brittle with age. Narrow opening along most of front hinge. Back hinge open. Bookplate discretely removed inside front board. Unmarked. A tender but worthy copy. Book

1780ref. 21044Unique. ca1780. Contemporary half leather over paper covered boards. The paper exhibiting a delicate floral design. Very good; some cover wear. Small 4to 114 pp. appx. 195 x 160 mm. Written in German gothic script on laid paper no watermark. Although this volume bears the signature of a John Shank and several lines in English establishing his ownership on January 29 1836 it dates from about 50 years before. It is continental in origin with no record of how Shank came to own it. The opening pages provide recipes for various color inks including the green used to record one other recipe later in the manuscript. It then moves on to colors. coloring metals writing on various surfaces the brazing of non-ferrous metals etching etc. At one point the writer addresses the dyeing of vellum and paper and the use of Lapis lazuli - both exotic topics not encountered in American manuscripts. There are occasional miscellaneous recipes recorded e.g. Dutch gin. The manuscript exhibits little wear or staining and one assumes Shank could not read the exotic text and had it as a keepsake. hardcover books

1929Lucky Strike cigarette ad on back cover provides a truly classic and timeless example of a mis-timed advertisement. Consider that the great Wall St. stock market crash of 1929 occurred mere days before this issue hit the newsstands. Beneath the caption "An Ancient Prejudice has been removed" appears a clenched fist labeled as "American Intelligence" breaking a heavy chain. Top left a paranoid miser stacks his gold by candlelight. Top right a wealthy couple visits their palatial bank. Text beneath miser reads "Hoarding gold with the fanatical zeal of the miser has vanished. American Intelligence sponsors thousands of banking institutions to which the individual (i.e. the wealthy couple) safely entrusts his wealth." The message is clear. Readers should put their trust (and money) in the banks, and shun gold. This issue was likely printed just as the Great Crash occurred, causing countless financial institutions to go under - and destroying even more individual fortunes. (The ad goes on to claim that cigarettes have similarly overcome the prejudice against them.) A truly stunning work which deserves to be preserved and reflected upon in this age of limitless fiat currency printing. Average wear with three-inch crease to lower corner of back cover. Suitably framed and mounted, this ad will make a superlative office display for any precious metals executive. Magazine
