Plein veau d'époque, dos à nerfs ornés, titres de maroquin rouge. Défauts d'usage et petits manques de cuir, coiffes fatiguées. Bel exemplaire, en reliure d'époque, du plus célèbre des ouvrages de vulgarisation scientifique du XVIIIème siècle (1ere édition : 1743). Érudit et artisan de talent, Nollet travaille avec du Fay et Réaumur comme constructeur d'instruments. C'est également un excellent orateur et vulgarisateur. Ces dons, joints aux instruments scientifiques qu'il a à sa disposition, l'encouragent à se lancer dans la carrière de conférencier. Il donne la première de ses "causeries expérimentales" en 1735. Le succès est immense et la popularité de Nollet va grandissant. Il est sollicité à Turin, Bordeaux, Reims ; les commandes d'instruments sont de plus en plus nombreuses ; Voltaire lui demande en 1738 un cabinet d'instruments d'une valeur de 10 000 livres. Sa position sociale et financière est assurée ; son prestige se trouve renforcé par son élection à l'Académie des sciences en 1739. Nollet est d’abord un vulgarisateur qui a brillamment illustré une approche de la communication scientifique où l'expérimentation et la démonstration jouent un rôle essentiel. Bel exemplaire, très frais. 6 vols. 8vo. 1 frontispiece portrait, 116 engraved folding plates depicting Nollet's instruments. Contemporary full calf. The most famous scientific work for the general public of 18th century. Nollet (1700-1770) was a popularizer who brightly illustrated a new approach of scientific communication based on experiment and demonstration. In the present work, the illustration shows his style as a scientific instrument maker.
