New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. 240 p. Nations and identities. The case of Greeks and Turks. Ten essays define and explain how nationalism, identities and ethnic conflicts Hercules Millas are created and function. The Greeks, the Turks and their historiographies, textbooks and literary texts are studied as a case to show how ethnic images, perceptions and prejudices of the Other are formed and operate. Based on his personal interethnic lifelong experience, the author proposes a way to approach these issues in education, too. All the essays in this study make use of the comparative approach to demonstrate how national identities are associated with an imagined Other. The identity of the Self and national identity as well as the related discourse can become meaningful and easy to understand when judged as counteractions of the involved groups. The whole endeavor is an effort to approach nationalism as a manifestation that needs to be examined with a variety of academic disciplines. Imagologists are used to dealing with the distinction between auto image and hetero-image. What Millas's research has highlighted is something which, to my knowledge, has not yet been thematized in image studies, but which is of great importance: the collapse between auto-image and hetero-image, our image of the other's image. I think something as important as this "image of an image" deserves its own name, so that it can be thematized without circumlocutions. The term "meta-image" seems to present itself. Prof. Dr. J. Th. Leerssen, University of Amsterdam.

Winner of the Special Prize in the Ottoman Bank Archives and Research Centre's competition unveiling the history of Turkish banking and finance in 2001, John Karatzoglou's The Impreial Ottoman Bank in Salonica; The First 25 Years (1890-1890) reconstructs the atmosphere in this branch of the bank in the late nineteenth century. The second largest Ottoman city in the European part of the Empire, Salonica was a vibrant city where Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived and worked together. Like the city, the local branch of the Ottoman Bank reflected the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the Empire. Based on data from the Ottoman Bank's personnel archives from the Salonica branzch, Karatzoglou has pieced together profiles of the employees, their positions, and their experiences in the bank. New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 119 p. Late Ottoman system in the Balkans in the light of the Late Ottoman educational Ijazahs. The study of ijazah tradition, its history and its impact is somehow neglected by both Muslim and non-Muslim researchers and scholars alike. This significantly unique tradition of the Muslim educational system has a long history as it emerged and developed parallel to Islamic education itself, and was in practice for more than a millennium. However, after adapting the new educational system during the late 19th century and throughout 20th century until the present, the tradition of granting ijazah drastically began to decline and to extent became a part of history as it was practised among countable scholars, who express their will to keep this distinctive Muslim tradition alive. During the 3rd century of Hijrah/9th century of C.E., this tradition had a strong impact to the higher learning institutions of Europe, where it is believed that granting diploma/license was the product of the Muslim tradition ofijazah, but in terms of the form and content the former differed completely from the latter. Besides the central regions of the Muslim world, the ijazah system appeared and practised extensively in the periphery, where this can be clearly seen in the regions of Southeast Asia and Southeast Europe. Though modern-day diploma replaced ijazah, this practice is still alive in certain parts of these regions; however, it is not recognised "officially" by the government higher learning institutions. Up to this moment, this research managed to interview and discuss with number of 'ulama who have been granted ijazah from their preceding scholars from various countries of the Balkans.
