With these, Mikes laid the foundations of Hungarian literary prose, and he is regarded as one of the first Hungarian prose authors. He was born in Zágon and grew up in Zabola (present-day Covasna County, Romania). He fought the Habsburg until being forced to flee to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, France and eventually the Ottoman Empire. While in Tekirdag, where he lived in exile with the Transylvanian Prince Ferenc Rákóczi, Mikes completed and published his essays. 2009New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 248 p. Essays on Ottoman historians and historiography. Ottoman historians also shared a common attribute as social critics, never shirking their perceived duty to protect the sultan's reputation by condemning the misdeeds of wrongdoers and contraveners of the best traditions of ethical behavior and good governance, even when these misdeeds issued from the top ranks of Ottoman society. For them corporate or class solidarity was far less important than an unswerving commitment to shared values and principles and a reformist spirit is clearly detectible in their writing. It is clear that in addition to their devotion to literary pursuits and achievements Ottoman historians took their advisory role very seriously. This collection of essays is presented in the hope that it will contribute to a better understanding of the unique blend of praise, eulogy and panegyric with hard-hitting social criticism, realism and reformist ideals that typifies the Ottoman historical opus. It is offered not as a definitive or would-be authoritative statement on a subject as boundless and many faceted as Ottoman historical thought but with the desire to stimulate further reflection and to serve as a potential source of inspiration for future generations of students pursuing new lines of inquiry into the thought world and spiritual essence of the Ottomans in a bygone imperial age.

The derbent facilities, surrounded by walls, are built around intersections of the main roads and in places with central importance; therefore, the inhabitants live in village recorded as the ones responsible for various services are exempted from some or all taxes. Derbents are not only important facilities they also provide security for the region and trade-route but they played a role in enabling settlement in isolated places to Although they were significant in terms of their functions, their organization begins to get out of order in 17th century, the residents have to leave their houses since they are subjected to pressure of bandits. In 18th century the state tried to put this malfunction in order. In spite of all the measures taken the derbents. In couldn't be brought back to its old form and so neglected. The reform movements that began with the administrative reforms "Tanzimat" enable derbent organizations to be removed and in modern sense security organization is founded; in this framework inns and derbents in some certain points are transformed into gendarme post.

2013New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. [xxxix], [1], 884 p., ills. War & nationalism: The Balkan Wars, 1912-1913, and their sociopolitical implications. War and Nationalism presents thorough up-to-date scholarship on the often misunderstood and neglected Balkan Wars of 1912 to 1913, which contributed to the outbreak of World War I. The essays contain critical inquiries into the diverse and interconnected processes of social, economic, and political exchange that escalated into conflict. The wars represented a pivotal moment that had a long-lasting impact on the regional state system and fundamentally transformed the beleaguered Ottoman Empire in the process. This interdisciplinary volume stands as a critique of the standard discourse regarding the Balkan Wars and effectively questions many of the assumptions of prevailing modern nation-state histories, which have long privileged the ethno-religious dimensions present in the Balkans. The authors go to great lengths in demonstrating the fluidity of social, geographical, and cultural boundaries before 1912 and call into question the "nationalist watershed" notion that was artificially imposed by manipulative historiography and political machinations following the end of fighting in 1913. War and Nationalism will be of interest to scholars looking to enrich their own understanding of an overshadowed historical event and will serve as a valuable contribution to courses on Ottoman and European history.
1939Very Good Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Turkish. 130, [14] p., 1 b/w unrealistic portrait frontispiece. First Edition in modern Turkish. Koçi Bey (died 1650) was a high-ranking Ottoman bureaucrat who lived in the first half of the 17th century. He was an ethnic Albanian, born in Korçë in eastern Albania. Within the scope of the devshirme system, he studied in the Enderun (palace school) in Istanbul. He was assigned to various posts and became the consultant of two sultans, Murat IV (1623-1640) and Ibrahim (1640-1648). He prepared a series of reports (Turkish: Risale) about reforms in the empire. He presented his first report to Murat IV in 1631, and the second to Ibrahim in 1640. Although the literary style of the first was more elaborate than the second, the main points were the same. In his reports he emphasized that the cause of unrest in the empire was the corruption of the timar (fief) system. He suggested a smaller and more disciplined army and a more authoritarian leadership. Towards the end of Ibrahim's reign he retired and returned to Korçë, his home town for the rest of his life. He was buried in Plamet village.
