Held at Nuremberg in 1945 and 1946 this famous tribunal indicted several Nazi leaders for war crimes. Twelve defendants were sentenced to death three to life imprisonment and four to twenty-year prison terms. Three were acquitted. The tribunal was significant because it affirmed the principle that both individuals and states could be held accountable for war crimes. The actual text of the proceedings contains a wealth of information on the crimes of the Nazi leadership as well as insight into the political and social background that facilitated the Nazi takeover of power. Added to our set are three of the six supplemental volumes issued by the HM Stationary office. The other three record the agreement to prosecute the indictments and the sentence. unknown books
1863ref. 37344Belair Maryland 1863. Neat ink manuscript. 4pp on a sheet folded to 6-78" x 8." Very Good. Maryland -- like her sister Border States of Delaware Missouri and Kentucky-- was a Slave State whose government remained loyal to the Union during the War. But each of those States contained many Confederate sympathizers. President Lincoln's policy was to suspend Habeas Corpus and subject such persons to military arrest and imprisonment generally without charging them or granting them access to the normal incidents of due process. One such unfortunate Robert W. Newman is the subject of this letter from an associate known only as "Mary." Newman was Principal of Maryland's Harford Academy. "His arrest took place at Belair near Baltimore in the latter part of June 1863 and was made by Lieutenant Offley at the head of a detachment of Delaware cavalry stationed in Baltimore and commanded by the notorious Colonel Fish then acting as Provost Marshal of the City." Marshall AMERICAN BASTILLE. A HISTORY OF THE ILLEGAL ARRESTS AND IMPRISONMENT OF AMERICAN CITIZENS DURING THE LATE CIVIL 621-623. Philadelphia: 1870. After about a month's imprisonment he was released without charges. We have been unable definitively to identify Mary. From context she was a close associate-- a relative close friend possibly even his wife. Her Letter reads in full capitalizations are underlined in the original: "Belair July 15 /63. Dear Mother Brothers & Sisters "This is a gloomy Sabbath morning to me I can assure you; it will be a week tomorrow morning since Mr. Newman was taken PRISONER with another gentleman of this village and CONFINED in the COUNTY JAIL; no charge was preferred against them; they were arrested by a detachment of the 1st Delaware regiment. The officer who arrested them said he was acting under orders from a superior officer from the war department. They were kept in jail from Monday till Thursday. The officer told me they must go before the provost marshall and have a hearing. Then we would know why they were arrested. I have anxiously looked every day since they were taken from here for an account of their appearance before the provost marshall but have heard no tidings of them. I shall probably know something of their whereabouts before long but I thought it not best to delay writing you any longer as you must be anxious to hear from me surrounded as I am with such commotion. For the last four days we have heard the roar of cannon on the battle field. Our little village is desolate. Many of the men have fled since the arrests fearing a like fate. This whole country is in a state of the WILDEST EXCITEMENT. "There is no Service in any of the churches in Belair today. The FUNERAL PALL has settled upon our very homes. Who can describe the SADNESS that broods over our land TODAY. "I have about two thousand dollars worth of property here to take care of so I cannot leave NOW under any circumstances. Mr. Newman's friends will never let me suffer. Mr. Newman MAY BE released in a short time but I think it MORE PROBABLE he will be sent South or to a distant fort. If Mr. Newman is taken from us by death or imprisonment for a long period or is sent South and goes into the army you all know I shall never settle myself here. I shall endeavor to wait patiently for the future to be revealed and at the same time thank my Heavenly father that he has given me strength of body and mind to endure my trials. I have felt stronger since Mr. Newman's imprisonment than I have before for several months. It is of course nervous excitement. I am taking medicine under the doctor's instruction. I take a glass of wine every day at dinner. "I read Phebe's letter-- glad you are all getting along so well. Write as soon as you get this that I may hear from you Saturday. You dont know how DESOLATE I am- dont fail to write. "Yours in affliction-- Mary unknown books

The area around Dezful has been home to civilizations for 5000 years. There are also photos of Andimeshk County in Khuzestan Iran. Andimeshk is located 20 miles north of Shush on the main road and the rail line between Tehran and Ahvaz. All the photos are circa 1943 in world war II era Iran. Photos are varies sizes but most approximately 3.5"x2.5". Some light wear and soiling to edges but images generally clean and crisp. A fascinating album of striking images that capture the daily experiences of American soldiers in Iran during the war including architecture sweeping landscapes of Persian deserts and gardens and contact with local Persians and villagers. An altogether fascinating look at life in Iran and the Middle East during a pivotal decade. American soldiers were in Iran during WW II to create a major supply line for the USSR providing them badly needed supplies and ammunition in their fight against the Germans. But the album also gives us a rare look into Iran's more deserted area. Photography of these areas are rarely found. In very good condition. unknown books

ref. 16729Black soldiers & Military Desegregation. Military photo album 1948-1951. Camp McCoy Wisconsin. 73 black & white photographs plus several personal mementos including ID cards and invitations belonging to John L. Wallace an African American military reservist who was called to active duty for the Korean War during the beginning of armed forces desegregation. The subjects of these photographs are mostly black soldiers of the 171stMilitary Police Battalion in Army uniform on locations around the Camp McCoy base. These are congenial photos most with soldiers posing together in front of barracks or with their vehicles some clowning around in fighting stances. Some photos are in dress uniform. Notably at least one of the black soldiers pictured is dressed to indicate officer rank; still unusual circa 1950. Also of note is a photo of eight soldiers black and white arm-in-arm in a pose of camaraderie in front of their barracks and baseball field. Although President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9981 to desegregate the Armed Forces on July 26 1948 the actual process of desegregation took well into the 1950s. John L. Wallace the owner of this album first served as a member of the District of Columbia National Guard under the segregated military system. His identification card loose with this album is dated July 19 1948 one week before the desegregation order. With the onset of the Korean War reservists such as Wallace were called to active duty. Wallace was sent for training at Camp McCoy Wisconsin. The majority of this album records his experiences here in 1950-1951 where he achieved the rank of corporal. Several photographs also show visits to Wallace's sweetheart a smartly-dressed college girl on her campus which is likely Howard University. Other items record Wallace's athletics while in the military including a portrait boxing photo indicating he competed on behalf of the 171st Battalion. Most ranging in size from 2"x3" to 4"x6" with a couple of larger portraits stapled in to rear pages. Brown leather covers embossed with American eagle crest and titled letters "Photographs Camp McCoy Wis." Tied with brown leather cord. Autographs of fellow soldiers with dates addresses and sentiments including "To a great soldier and a good friend" and "Be cool my man." Most photos attached with period photo corners some loose. Accompanied by loose ephemera pieces related in time and date. An uplifting piece recording an important moment for the history of African Americans in the Armed Forces. unknown books

"Women's Army Auxiliary Corps / U.S. Army / Apply at any U.S. Army recruiting and induction station." Spurred on by the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7 1941 Congress approved the creation of WAAC on May 14 1942 to enhance the US military force and staff non-combat roles with women workers to create a larger male fighting force; they realized that women could supply additional resources desperately needed in both military and industrial sectors. Members of the WAAC were the first women other than nurses to serve within the ranks of the United States Army and over 150000 American women served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. By the end of the war their contributions would be widely heralded and even General Eisenhower felt that he could not win the war without the aid of the women in uniform.
