With bold leadership in the battles of Gaines' Mill and Antietam Hood won favor with Confederate president Jefferson Davis. But his fortunes in war took a tragic turn when he assumed command of the Confederate Army of Tennessee. After the fall of Atlanta Hood marched his troops north in an attempt to draw Union army general William T. Sherman from his devastating "March to the Sea." But the ploy proved ruinous for the South. While Sherman was undeterred from his scorched-earth campaign Hood and his troops charged headlong into catastrophe. In this compelling account Wiley Sword illustrates the poor command decisions and reckless pride that made a disaster of the Army of Tennessee's final campaign. From Spring Hill where they squandered an early advantage Hood and his troops launched an ill-fated attack on the neighboring town of Franklin. The disastrous battle came to be known as the "Gettysburg of the West." But worse was to come as Hood pressed on to Nashville where his battered troops suffered the worst defeat of the entire war. From dust jacket: Based on American design the British-made Enfield rifle was one of the most handsome and effective military arms of its day. While large quantities of these highly regarded rifles were imported by both North and South during the American Civil War it was in the hands of the weapons-starved Confederacy that the Enfield was to see its greatest moment. Southern blockade runners cargoed shipments of these arms right up to the last days of the great rebellion. The international intrigue the historical personalities and much of the personal correspondence that accompanied the traffic of Enfields to the C.S.A. is carefully chronicled on these pages by author Wiley Sword a rapidly rising authority on American military subjects. Additionally collectors will benefit from the author’s theories regarding identification of those Enfields that saw Confederate service -- long a matter of argument and conjecture among arms historians. Another weapons with strong romatnic/historical attachments to the South was the technically remarkable LeMat revolver. Although this rare pistol quickly established itself in notoriety little has been published regarding the manner in which the LeMat reached its Confederate market. New research presented here will prove of interest to many students of the times. As a bonus information regarding a variety of other Confederate small arms is presented within the appendixes. 1988réf. 61767bdLincoln Rhode Island: Andrew Mowbray Incorporated 1988. First Edition. Octavo orange cloth hardcover 124 pp. Fine in a Fine mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: No unit of the American Civil War served with more effect or won more renown than Berdan’s Sharpshooter’s; and acclaimed historian Wiley Sword tells us why. In these pages you will find the story of the United States Sharpshooters from beginning to end including the inspired inventor who founded and commanded the famous unit the hand-picked men who manned its ranks and the innovative weapon which they used with such precision. From training camp to the dissolution of the unit Sword traces the story of the 1st and 2nd U.S.S.S.: the qualities faults of their celebrated leader the internal power struggles among the officers and men their efforts to procure the Sharps rifle the units legendary fighting spirit the basis for their popularity with the press and notoriety with the rest of the army. Rich in anecdotal material Sword’s text also reaches scientific precision especially when he presents information for Berdan Sharps rifle collectors. His serial number charts alone are essential for identification. Also included are two fascinating appendices “The Dairy 1864 of Private William B. Green Co. G. 2D U.S.S.S.” such accounts are very rare especially late in the war because of the unit’s high mortality rate and “The Report of Major George G. Hastings 1st U.S.S.S. of the Battle of Chancellorsville May 3 1863” a document highly revealing of Berdan’s character and how he was regarded by the officers who served under him. 1875réf. 145831875. Set of two original albumen prints depicting armed Arab and Bedouin camel riders published circa 1875 represents late nineteenth-century photographic engagement with tribal identity martial imagery and desert life in the Arab world. Produced during a period when European photographers and publishers circulated ethnographic and Orientalist imagery to Western audiences these photographs document the visual construction of the "Arab warrior" as both cultural type and romanticized emblem of desert autonomy. The images support research in Middle Eastern social history the history of photography colonial-era ethnographic representation and the visual politics of identity in the Ottoman and North African regions during the late nineteenth century. Albumen prints. Circa 1875. Each image approximately 8.25 x 11 inches. The first photograph shows an Arab warrior mounted astride a camel spear poised in throwing position with a sword secured to the saddle at the animal's flank. The rider and camel stand centered on a road lined with palm trees and vegetation suggesting an oasis or cultivated approach to settlement. The second photograph portrays a Bedouin figure traditionally dressed in a thobe and kufiyya standing beside his camel against an open desert landscape. The camel is saddled with the warrior's sword visible along its side and a solitary fort tower appears in the background evoking regional defensive architecture and territorial presence. Both compositions emphasize weaponry dress and mounted mobility as markers of status and identity. Such images circulated widely in European albums and travel publications shaping Western perceptions of Arab society through a lens that combined documentary detail with staged ethnographic typology. The prominence of spear and sword underscores continuity of martial symbolism at a time when imperial powers were consolidating control across North Africa and the Middle East. The juxtaposition of oasis roadway and stark desert fortification highlights environmental and political dimensions of nineteenth-century life in the region. Light age-related toning consistent with albumen process; minor surface wear and edge handling; images retain strong contrast and clarity. Overall very good condition. A compelling pair of nineteenth-century photographs reflecting the intersection of photography ethnographic representation and constructions of Arab martial identity. unknown books
