Cannon professor and chair of the Department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School was one of the pre-eminent physiologists of the 20th century making fundamental contributions to our knowledge of digestion the autonomic nervous system homeostasis and stress response. Cannon was the first to use X rays to study the digestive system; his work laid the foundations of gastrointestinal radiology. "His pioneering research done with a series of collaborators examined the nature of swallowing gastric peristalsis the time of passage for different foodstuffs out of the stomach into the duodenum control of the pylorus and peristalsis of the small intestine" Dictionary of Scientific Biography. He spent most of the 1920s researching the autonomic nervous system the part of the nervous system responsible for controlling unconscious bodily functions such as the heartbeat. Cannon also introduced the case system into medical education at Harvard see no. 2 below. Three of the offprints in this collection bear presentation inscriptions from Cannon. Another offprint is from the library of Nobel Laureate Archibald V. Hill who was awarded a share of the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine for his researches on the production of heat and mechanical work in muscles. Two more offprints are from the library of the distinguished British physiologist C. Lovatt Evans Hill's successor as professor of physiology at the University of London. 1. with A. Moser. A very early expose of the Bennewitz affair in which a successful American businessman with an interest in UFOs was allegedly manipulated by Air Force intelligence agents into spreading disinformation. Bennewitz eventually suffered a mental breakdown and had to be hospitalized. Author and UFO researcher William Moore part of an informal intelligence/UFOlogist group called The Aviary later claimed that he had been recruited to feed Bennewitz false information in order to destabilize him. Bennewitz's descent into madness was profiled in the 2005 book Project Beta and the 2013 documentary Mirage Men which suggested that the government created UFO hoaxes as a smokescreen for classified activity. Illustrations by Martin Cannon whose book The Controllers is featured in an ad at the rear. Rare with a single OCLC holding at Baylor University. Crux Publications unknown

1853Best.-Nr. 168026London: Printed by George E. Eyre and William Spottiswoode published by Parker Furnivall and Parker 1853. Smartly presented history of the hard-fighting 39th First and most desirable edition; subsequent printings were published with inferior unsigned wood-engraved variants of the original plates. The exact process by which copies of Cannon's histories came to be bound in this handsome style generally termed "presentation" - very occasionally signed by Smith of Long Acre - is not known. "Reputedly William IV proposed that a series of regimental histories should be compiled whereby the general public could be apprised of the distinguished services rendered by the regiments of the British army. the work of compilation was entrusted by royal warrant to Cannon principal clerk of the adjutant-general's office. He started immediately and the first volume to be published was a history of the Life Guards in 1837. Cannon's warrant expired on the death of William IV but was renewed on Victoria's accession to the throne. Unfortunately the official funding was not maintained and Cannon endeavoured to finance the project from his own pocket consequently running into serious pecuniary difficulties. Cannon's volumes were authoritative and readable well produced and often well illustrated. If somewhat lacking in the human interest expected of modern historians Cannon nevertheless set a standard for succeeding regimental historians to emulate" ODNB. The Dorsets raised in 1689 and reformed in 1702 fought in Spain and Portugal during the War of the Spanish Succession; during the 18th century they were at the siege of Gibraltar from whence the regiment's badge and in 1754 were the first British Army unit deployed to India hence their motto "Primus in India" and fought at Plassey. In 1809 they were sent to Spain fighting at Wellington's signal victories at Talavera Bussaco Badajoz Albuera and Vittoria. From 1832 a 13-year posting to India saw them taking part in the Coorg and Gwalior campaigns. The history cuts off before their embarkation for the Crimea in 1854. Octavo 210 x 123 mm. Engraved series title 2 hand-coloured lithographic plates heightened with gum arabic both by Madeley showing the regimental colours and badge and a group of three officers in uniform of the 1840s.
