Sullivan one of America's most influential architects strove to develop a purely American architectural vision and his ideas led his student Frank Lloyd Wright and Wright's contemporaries to develop the Prairie School. Wright's strongly horizontal designs with low-hipped or flat roofs bands of art-glass windows and open interior planning now number among the most respected domestic buildings in the country. The designs of William Drummond John Van Bergen and Walter Burley Griffin had much in common with Wright's but other architects such as George W. Maher Robert Spencer and Tallmadge & Watson developed their own interpretations of the Prairie house adding such decorative elements as columns and mosaic fireplace surrounds or favoring more conventional entrances with clearly defined rooms. The Prairie style fell out of vogue largely before the onset of World War I though John Van Bergen continued to build the houses into the 1920s and Wright's famous Wingspread in Racine Wisconsin was built in 1937. Recently there has been a Prairie revival in keeping with a renewed interest in the Arts and Crafts aesthetic. But the houses conceived by these early-twentieth-century architects stand as icons of American ingenuity. Prairie Metropolis: Chicago and the Birth of a New American Home offers brief biographies of a dozen architects with vivid and inviting color photographs of exteriors and interiors designed by each. The 160 photographs by James Caulfield offer a multi-home tour of exquisite taste while succinct captions by Patrick F. Cannon draw our attention to the details of each home's construction and design. . 2008. 0764945955 . Pomegranate Communications hardcover

1845Best.-Nr. 168027London: Parker Furnivall and Parker 1845. The Old and Bold turned out in parade dress A sparkling copy of the first and most desirable edition; subsequent printings were published with inferior unsigned wood-engraved variants of the original plates. The exact process by which copies of Cannon's histories came to be bound in this handsome style generally termed "presentation" - very occasionally signed by Smith of Long Acre - is not known. "Reputedly William IV proposed that a series of regimental histories should be compiled whereby the general public could be apprised of the distinguished services rendered by the regiments of the British army. the work of compilation was entrusted by royal warrant to Cannon principal clerk of the adjutant-general's office. He started immediately and the first volume to be published was a history of the Life Guards in 1837. Cannon's warrant expired on the death of William IV but was renewed on Victoria's accession to the throne. Unfortunately the official funding was not maintained and Cannon endeavoured to finance the project from his own pocket consequently running into serious pecuniary difficulties. Cannon's volumes were authoritative and readable well produced and often well illustrated. If somewhat lacking in the human interest expected of modern historians Cannon nevertheless set a standard for succeeding regimental historians to emulate" ODNB. Kane Judge of the District Court of the United States for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania In the Case of the United States of America Ex. Rel. John H. Wheeler vs. Passmore Williamson Including the Several Opinions Delivered; And The Arguments of Counsel Reported by Arthur Cannon Esq. Phonographer. Philadelphia: Uriah Hunt & Son 1856. Octavo modern half calf-gilt marbled boards; pp. 191. $2200.First edition of ""the most complete record available"" of the controversial Pennsylvania case on fugitive slaves a core work establishing a precedent ""in federal and state courtsÉ and important cause clÂbre for the antislavery movement"" crucial in asserting a clear path for the following year's Dred Scott decision and provoking a ""legal crisisÉ that led to the Civil War.""""During the fugitive slave controversy the abolitionist underground kicked into high gear."" This momentous shift was propelled by Federal District Judge John K. Kane in the Passmore Williamson case involving the rights of fugitive slave Jane Johnson. ""In July 1855 Col. John H. Wheeler the U.S. minister plenipotentiary designate to Nicaragua traveled to Philadelphia with his slave Jane and her two sons."" When she ""managed to get word out of her desire for freedom"" Black abolitionist William Still famed for his 1872 work Underground Railroad heard of her plight and alerted white abolitionist Passmore Williamson. They arranged to meet at the Philadelphia wharf and Williamson who arrived first immediately told Jane ""she was entitled to her freedom and released her from Wheeler's grasp."" As she fled with her two sons ""a heated exchange and scuffle occurred between Still Williamson and Wheeler who was held down by two of the five Black dockworkers present"" Sinha Slave's Cause 527-28.This triggered a series of major court cases when Williamson was presented with a writ of habeas corpus by Judge Kane and indictments were issued charging Williamson and the Black dockworkers for riot assault and robbery for the theft of slave property in transit. Although Williamson stated Jane and her sons were never in his custody Kane charged him with contempt and sentenced him to jail. As Frederick Douglass joined with others in attacking Kane's ""tyrannical position"" and Williamson petitioned for the contempt charge to be dropped Jane who adopted the surname of Johnson played yet another key role. In an affidavit sworn in Massachusetts she affirmed that she had never been in Williamson's custody stating: ""Nobody forced me awayÉ I always wished to be free and meant to be free when I came North"" Sinha 529. Although Jane was likely considered free under Pennsylvania law the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ""refused to interfere with Williamson's incarceration"" after Judge Kane rejected Jane's affidavit Finkelman Slavery in the Courtroom 40-41. In effect Kane's defense of slave-owner rights ""created a new constitutional rightÑ'transit for property and person'Ñbased on a Constitution written to 'establish a more perfect union.'"" Williamson was imprisoned for nearly six months and became a martyr for the abolitionist cause but ""more importantÉ was the precedent set in the federal and state courts by this case."" Judge Kane's insistence ""that Wheeler had a right to bring his slaves into Pennsylvania and capture them there if they escapedÉ despite state law explicitly prohibiting it"" opened the way for the ""high-water mark of this positionÉ in the Dred Scott case 1857 a year after Kane's opinion"" Finkelman Imperfect Union 260-64; emphasis added. The case of Passmore Williamson and Jane Johnson was ""an important cause clÂbre for the antislavery movementÉ an example ofÑand contributor toÑthe legal crisis and the crisis in federalism that led to the Civil War"" Finkelman Slavery 41. First edition: recorded by court reporter Arthur Cannon: ""contains the most complete record available of the proceedings before Judge Kane in the federal district court and the proceedings in this case before the Pennsylvania Supreme CourtÉ of particular interest is the dissent of Justice John C. Original gilt-stamped cloth one corner bumped. Light toning but very good. Presentation Copy inscribed by Cannon to Sir Cuthbert Wallace 1867-1944 on slip tipped to front pastedown: "To Sir Cuthbert Wallace with gratitude for your kindness and encouragement during our work in old Béthune. Walter B. Cannon." First Edition. Cannon professor and chair of the Department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School was one of the pre-eminent physiologists of the 20th century making fundamental contributions to our knowledge of digestion the autonomic nervous system homeostasis and stress response. "In the fall of 1916 before the United States entered World War I the National Research Council named Cannon a member of a committee on traumatic shock. Later he joined the Harvard University Hospital Unit. On his way to France in May 1917 he stopped in London and arranged with Fletcher first secretary of the Medical Research Committee to join the group of physicians and surgeons of the British Expeditionary Forces who were dealing with shock cases at the Casualty Clearing Station at Béthune. . . . Initially Cannon and his associates in the field concentrated their therapeutic efforts on treating the acidosis that accompanies shock. Later they recognized that the acidosis was merely a secondary phenomenon the result of the inadequacy of tissue perfusion. In 1923 Cannon summarized his wartime experience in Traumatic Shock" Dictionary of Scientific Biography. Cannon presented this copy of Traumatic Shock to his commanding officer at Béthune Colonel Cuthbert Sidney Wallace consulting surgeon to the First Army British Expeditionary Force. Cannon noted in his preface that "We were serving under Colonel Cuthbert Wallace later Major-General Sir Cuthbert Wallace who was as eager as any of us to secure further knowledge of shock and who helped and encouraged us in our efforts" p. ix. . Signed by Walter Cannon on the front free endpaper "With cordial regards." xiii 311 pp. Bound in publisher's crimson cloth with gilt spine lettering. Very Good with darkened spine lettering worn tips diagonal crease to ffep lacking dust jacket. Quite rare signed. The author was an American physiologist who riginated the concept of homeostasis. This particular work introduced the world to the "fight or flight response." According to an article on him in BrainImmune an online neuroendocrine immunology review "He asserted that not only physical emergencies such as blood loss from trauma but also psychological emergencies such as antagonistic encounters between members of the same species evoke release of adrenaline into the bloodstream. To Cannon the body"s responses to 'fight' are the same as those to 'flight.' Adrenaline exerts several important effects in different body organs all of which from Cannon"s point of view maintain homeostasis in fight-or-flight situations. In the skeletal muscle of the limbs adrenaline relaxes blood vessels increasing local blood flow." Garrison Morton 1200. D. Appleton and Company unknown
