1930réf. 19854Boston: Little Brown and Company. Near Fine. 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket bumped at base of spine very slight wear to front joint front cover lettering just a touch rubbed; otherwise a nice-looking and exceptionally clean book. Novel set in a small New Hampshire mill town in which the native New Englanders are dying out the principal characters are a young couple who find themselves unwillingly childless and being supplanted by Polish immigrants. Perhaps they've forgotten that they themselves came of immigrant stock; well isn't that pretty much how it generally goes Per Wikipedia the author "was a progressive thinker and an advocate for women's rights birth control and public education" whose writings in addition to her eight novels of which this was the second included "numerous essays on controversial topics such as women's rights birth control and immigration policy." She was also alas a believer in eugenics. Well to quote Joe E. Brown nobody's perfect. . Little, Brown and Company hardcover books

Cannon Clarence 1879-1964. Cannon's Procedure in the House of Representatives: By Clarence Cannon; With Notes and Addenda by George Y. Harvey. Washington DC: United States Government Printing Office 1953. ix 505 pp. Thumb-tabbed. Green textured cloth gilt title to center of front cover "Mr. Justice Burton" gilt-stamped lower front cover. A very good copy. $250. Harold Burton was born and raised in a Boston suburb. He attended Bowdoin College and completed his law degree at Harvard. He practiced law in Ohio and later served as the mayor of Cleveland. Burton holds the unusual distinction of being the only Republican appointed to the Supreme Court from 1933 to 1953 a period of virtually complete Democratic control. He proved to be the most liberal of Truman's four appointments. He possessed extraordinary personal charm. As one scholar wrote "probably no member of the.Court enjoyed greater affection from his colleagues on the bench." But his liberal views did not always protect individual rights as his opinion for the Court in the Bute case makes plain. OYEZ.org. unknown books
