1938Best.-Nr. 344H4441London: Friends of Europe. Fair. 1938. Reprint. Pamphlet. 21 pages. 21 x 14 cm. Opens with a highly informative five-page Foreword by the Duchess of Atholl M.P. the first female Scottish Member of Parliament. She provides details of the publishing and distribution history of Mein Kampf to-date and possible reasons why its content has remained relatively unknown for so long by non-German speakers. In particular she expresses her disdain for the 'severe expurgation' of the October 1933 English version entitled My Struggle. The following fourteen pages consist of quotes from a 1936 edition of Mein Kampf which she refers to as the Nazi Bible in which Hitler sets forth his views on foreign policy. These quotes are grouped under the following headings: German Arms and Methods; A Pan-German Policy; The Conquest of Territories - Old and New; Alliances Essential for the Overthrow of France; Views on Peace and Pacifism. Reprint of the 1936 first edition published by the Friends of Europe an organization which claimed to offer "reliable information on the racial ideas the religious struggle the new militarism new education and foreign policy in Nazi Germany." - last leaf. The seasonal text, SIGNED BY DONITZ IN BLUE INK , reads 'Grossadmiral Donitz dankt fur die guten Wunsche zum Weihachtsfest und zum neuen jahr und erwidert sie herzlich'. Grossadmiral Karl Donitz (1871-1980), German naval leader and Hitler's successor, commanded the Kriegsmarine during the latter half of WWII and is remembered particularly for his promotion of the U-boat offensive. He also served as Reichspraesident following Hitler's suicide in April 1945. Having authorised the German surrender he became a prisoner-of-war of the British and was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment for war crimes (primarily for ordering unrestricted submarine warfare). Following his release from Spandau in October 1956, Donitz's reputation underwent a degree of rehabilitation and he took considerable pains to answer correspondence and to provide autographs when required (including a facsimile for historians and collectors of the Articles of Surrender which he co-signed with Montgomery). HOWEVER, DOCUMENTS SIGNED BY DONITZ DURING THE WAR YEARS ARE SCARCE.

1937Best.-Nr. 374289Boston: Houghton Mifflin 1937. Second American Edition. 297pp. frontispiece. 1 vols. 8vo. Light brown cloth with title printed in red on front cover and spine. Fine in publisher's lightly chipped dust jacket with minor wear. Second American Edition. 297pp. frontispiece. 1 vols. 8vo. A scarce second American edition of Hitler's autobiography and political manifesto in one of the best examples we've seen of the rare dust jacket that elicited an official protest from the German government. Despite condemnation of its first American edition from Jewish American groups Houghton Mifflin risked the publication of a second edition lowering the retail price from $3.00 to $2.50 and issuing a newly designed dust jacket. The dust jacket is illustrated with the color scheme of the Weimar Republic and includes a provocative quote from journalist Dorothy Thompson. The design drew a swift formal protest from the German government who demanded that it be replaced by a dust jacket approved by the original German publisher Eher Verlag. Houghton Mifflin refused the request. American journalist and radio broadcaster Dorothy Thompson was the first American journalist expelled from Nazi Germany in 1934 for her depcition of Hitler in her book I Saw Hitler! 1932 Farrar and Rinehart. Her expulsion order was hand delivered by a Gestapo agent and gave her 24 hours to leave the country. Her quote on the back of the dust jacket reads in part: "As a liberal democrat I deprecate every idea in this book. But it is not the function of liberals and democrats to live in a world of illusions." In 1939 Reynal & Hitchcock published the unabridged edition but by then the rest of the world was already at war. Houghton Mifflin unknown

19445704 (1944). Original blank paper wrappers. 8vo. 64 pages. 21 cm. Reprinted in early 1944 for Jewish refugees in Switzerland with some additional notations. In Hebrew and German in parallel columns (with diacritic vowel marks under the Hebrew, and with Yiddish translation between Hebrew). Original 1938 title page, with verso 1944 German title page: Den jüdischen Flüchtlingen in der Schweiz; Zur Feier des [Pesakh]-Festes im Jahre 5704; überreicht vom Schweizerischen Israelitischen Gemeindebund. (For the Jewish Refugees in Switzerland; For the celebration of Pesakh in the year 5704; presented by the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities). Copyright by Lehrberger & Co. of Frankfurt. A European-published hagada from the darkest period of the Holocaust, produced specifically for those feeling the inferno. During 1943 and 1944, the extermination camps were working at a furious rate to kill the hundreds of thousands of people shipped to them by rail from almost every country within the German sphere of influence, and by the spring of 1944, up to 8,000 people were being gassed every day at Auschwitz (USHMM, 2012). Passover 1944 began on April 8, the day that the roundups of the Jews of Carpatho-Ruthenia and northern Hungary started. On April 14, the last day of the Holiday, László Endre & László Baky (German-installed heads of the Ministry of the Interior) and Eichmann made the official decision to deport all the Jews of Hungary. With ten illustrations; an early 19th century German Orthodox Haggadah originally compiled by Wolf Heidenheim in 1822. Published for German-Jewish refugees in Switzerland under the auspices of the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities, founded in 1904 to help protect the general interest of Jews in Switzerland; during the second world war, the Federation helped support the refugee community in Switzerland: Prior to and during the Second World War, Switzerland gave refuge to about 23,000 Jewish refugees although the government decided that Switzerland would serve only as a country of transit. These Jews were protected during the Holocaust due to Swiss neutrality. The Jewish refugees, however, did not receive the financial support from the government that non-Jewish refugees received. Many more Jews were prevented from entering, effectively shutting the border. (Jewish Virtual Library; Switzerland). The publishers, Goldschmidt, issued an earlier printing in 1940 (listed in one library on OCLC), no copies of this issue (1944) listed in libraries on oclc. Subjects: Haggada shel Pesah. 1939Best.-Nr. 222j3127Berlin Germany: M. Muller & Sohn K.G. Good No dust jacket as issued. First English Edition. Pamphlet. "Members of the Reichstag! When six years ago on this evening tens of thousands of National Socialist fighters marched through the Brandenburg Gate to the light of their torches to express to me their feeling of overwhelming joy and their vows as faithful followers countless anxious eyes all over Germany gazed upon the the beginning of a development the end of which still seemed unknown and unpredictable. I received only a little over a third of all votes cast. The other twenty million were scattered among about 35 other parties. The only thing that united them was their common hatred of our young movement. This united the priests of the Centre Party and Communist atheists the Socialists out to abolish private property capitalists and conservatives. During the long battle of National Socialism for the leadership of the country they had all come together in defence of their interests and had made common cause with Jewry. The complete picture of the extent of the collapse in that period is gradually fading away. It seemed that only a miracle could save Germany. To the Jews and the other enemies of the State however it appeared to be the last flicker of the national power of resistance. They felt that when it had disappeared then they would be able to destroy not only Germany but all Europe as well." - paraphrased from pages 3-4. "During the time of my struggle for power it was in the first instance the Jewish race which only received my prophecies with laughter when I said that I would one day take over the leadership of the State and that I would then among other things settle the Jewish problem. Today I will once more be a prophet: If the international Jewish financiers in and outside Europe should succeed in plunging the nations once more into a world war then the result will not be the bolshevization of the earth and thus the victory of Jewry but the annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe!" - page 42. Text in English. 54 stapled pages. Binding tight. Moderate tanning to contents and covers. Numerous light pencil markings and thoughtful marginalia throughout. Discrete clear tape repairs to covers. A sound vintage example of this historic speech in which some argue Hitler presaged the Holocaust.; 8vo . 1939. M. Muller & Sohn K.G. unknown
