1918réf. 4740Cambridge United Kingdom: Bowes and Bowes 1918. hardcover. Very Good. N/A. Cinquante Quatre: Flying Corps Songs Anonymous 54 Squadron RFC — Second Impression Publication: Cambridge Bowes and Bowes 1918 Formatting: 8vo unpaginated. Condition Report: Very Good. The cloth binding remains remarkably tight and structurally sound. While the light blue cloth over boards displays some minor edge wear and a gentle darkening to the spine the gilt titling to the upper cover remains notably bright and unoxidised. Internally the pages are crisp bright and free from any significant foxing stains or handling marks suggesting the volume has been carefully stored. The presence of a clear protective sleeve has evidently aided in the preservation of this delicate wartime publication. Catalogue Note: This is the second impression published in April 1918 following the privately printed first impression of July 1917. As stated on the title page the volume is complete with its seven original collotype illustrations. Originally compiled for the men of No. 54 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps this book is genuinely scarce on the open market. These ephemeral privately printed military songbooks were often read to pieces in the mess halls or discarded after the war making surviving original copies in such respectable condition quite uncommon. Compiled during the height of the First World War Cinquante Quatre is a rare and evocative collection of songs sung by the pilots and mechanics of No. 54 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps. Filled with dark humour technical jargon and a poignant spirit of endurance these verses offer a visceral glimpse into the daily lives fears and bravado of early military aviators. An essential piece of aviation history this volume preserves the authentic voice of the men who took to the skies in Sopwith Pups. Bowes and Bowes hardcover
19188vo., Third Impression, with full-page illustrations in the text; blue cloth, upper board lettered in gilt, a remarkably well-preserved, bright, clean copy. This third (and we believe final) impression was issued in October 1918 shortly before the Armistice. EXTREMELY SCARCE. Noffsinger 278 (recording only the second impression).
19448vo., First Edition, with map as frontispiece, and illustrations and maps in the text, leaves tanning lightly; original blue limp cloth wrappers, upper cover with printed paper label, a near fine copy. RARE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION.

réf. 3733452Paris: Devambez Graveur. 1918. “Passed by Censor.” Six leaves i.e. 7 pages of text. 5½ x 7½ inches. Oblong. String-tied in red white and blue stiff wrappers; a group portrait taken from an original photograph mounted to the front cover. Overall very good. Rare. This item served as a commemorative booklet a program for an evening of squadron entertainment and contains a 1-page regimental history of the United States 464th Aero Squadron. The unit was first formed as the 52nd Aero Squadron. Under the leadership of James U. Sockman they arrived in France in late October 1917 and became—according to this publication—“one of the best and most notorious bands of warriors in the American Expeditionary Forces.” Privately printed in Paris only a small number of copies would have been produced. OCLC: Bangor Public Library only. “Constituted in the United States Army Air Corps as Air Park No. 4 and assigned to the 2d Bombardment Group Kelly Field Texas on 26 June 1922; Concurrently organized with personnel and equipment from the 464th Aero Squadron; Re-designated as the 59th Service Squadron on 25 January 1923. Demobilized on 1 September 1936.” Wikipedia unknown
