1944réf. 12619New York: American Veterans Society of Artists Inc 1944. Staplebound. Near fine. Small octavo unpaginated 24pp. illustrated. A near fine copy in the publisher's stapled wraps. A smoker's copy with faint tobacco odor. Staples rusted else a sound clean example. SIGNED and generically INSCRIBED by Frederic Allen Williams then President of the organization as well as a contributing artist. A catalogue for the sixth such exhibition this one held during the height of America's involvement in World War II five months after D-Day. There are sixteen halftone illustrations depicting some of the work on display; mostly painting but some sculpture as well. While all of the art is competent some of it is truly impressive and it's clear that while the organization welcomed a range of talent most of the artists had some mastery of their form. Williams in his introduction to the catalogue writes: "The demoralizing influences of war are obvious throughout the country and have made a great impression on creative genius. As the clouds of war pass by art shall bloom again nurtured by the sanity of American Art tradition and fed by the passion of young blood. Stand by and support American Art." Williams was a privileged Bostonian and a veteran of World War I. While he didn't see actual combat there can be no question that the experiences of his comrades left a great impression on him and he became involved with the American Veterans Society of Artists. He was an early member of the artist set in Taos and his work was exhibited in countless mainstream museums during his lifetime. The pamphlet is scarce--in fact we find no holdings of this exact one in OCLC and just a handful of other near-contemporary ones. We also have had toruble finding examples of his signature outside of original artwork. As such a desirably scarce example. American Veterans Society of Artists, Inc unknown

réf. BK0194Newport Rhode Island August 11 181. Manuscript letter one page on a folded sheet signed in Wilcox's name by Thomas Williams as agent. 7 ¾ x 9 ¾ inches. Old folds light toning and minor marginal wear. Very good. An early appeal under the landmark pension act of March 18 1818 the first federal legislation extending lifetime pensions to needy Revolutionary War veterans who had not been disabled in service. Benjamin Wilcox a former lieutenant in the Rhode Island Continental Line had applied almost immediately after the law's passage submitting his claim before a Newport judge in late March. Nearly five months later having received no response he wrote directly to Secretary of War John C. Calhoun: "To my great disappointment I have heard nothing of it since. If lack of evidence has been the cause I think I should have heard so. But this was deemed hardly possible by my friends after having given in one of two commissions that I have the honour to have held & such other evidence of services poverty & inability to obtain a livelihood from old age & weakness as the law appeared to require." The new program attracted far more applicants than anticipated forcing Congress to tighten eligibility requirements in 1820. Calhoun himself reported to Congress in 1823 that the War Department had not kept count of pension applications until August 1818 the very month Wilcox wrote demanding to know what had become of his claim. . unknown

réf. 3731812Chicago: Willkie War Veterans National Committee 1940. 16½ x 11½ inches. Half tone illustration. Typographical Union “bug” at lower left. Folds and faint creasing; small tears in margins at one seam line; very good. A 1940 presidential campaign poster for Wendell Willkie the Democrat-turned-Republican activist and lawyer from Indiana. Here American war veteran supporters of Willkie back his European interventionist policies specifically in aid of France which had been invaded and subjugated by Nazi Germany in May and June 1940. The poster depicts a French soldier speaking about the power of voting and its necessity for freedom: “Once I could vote too! Once like you I was a free man! A Frenchman! Politicians made speeches to me too! They spoke about our impregnable democracy. They told me what they were doing to protect my standard of living and my working conditions. They promised my family safety through preparedness. But they weren’t honest with me! They let me down!. I was one of a nation of free men who did not prize freedom—who forgot that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. Today I am no longer free.” The Chicago-based Willkie War Veterans National Committee warns that France’s tragedy can become our own and urges preparedness warning that Democrat incumbent President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “administration is failing America as the French politicians failed France.” OCLC records one variant example of this poster printed in New York City “Prepared by St. Georges and Keyes Advertising.” wq10 unknown

réf. 10483Walnut Grove Confederate Veterans Association. Constitution undated records the organizational rules of a local Confederate veterans association and its efforts to preserve Confederate memory while maintaining fellowship and mutual assistance among former soldiers. The manuscript defines who could join establishes officers and administrative procedures and makes sickness death and funeral observance formal responsibilities of the organization. Its language documents the practical structure through which former Confederates maintained social ties after the Civil War and converted wartime affiliation into organized commemorative and benevolent activity. Manuscript "Constitution" for a Confederate Veterans Association at Walnut Grove possibly Tennessee undated. 5½ pages folio. Membership was restricted according to military service and discharge status: "All Confederate veterans who was honorable discharged from service is eligible to membership in this Association." The stated objectives combine remembrance fellowship moral conduct and assistance to members calling for "the Conservation of Confederate memories the formation of fellowship and the Cultivation of friendship between the veterans of the late Confederate War" and "the Exhibition of loyal respect to the recollection and Impulses of a Confederate past." The constitution further directs members toward "the Encouragement and practice of manly virtues" and "the Extension of reasonable aid and sympathy to fellow members in time of sickness and distress and in case of death the rendition of suitable funeral honors." It specifies officer titles and duties and establishes an order of business showing how commemorative aims were translated into recurring administrative practice. Particular attention to illness death and funeral honors places mutual aid alongside Confederate commemoration as a central purpose of the association. A few committee members are named on the verso of the final page offering possible evidence for identifying the organization and resolving the uncertain Walnut Grove location through further genealogical or local historical research. The manuscript therefore records not only the association's commemorative language but also membership qualifications governance committee activity and obligations to veterans in distress. Condition has not been independently assessed from the supplied information. The survival of the association's working constitution preserves direct evidence of how a local body of Confederate veterans defined membership organized its affairs and prescribed the remembrance of the Confederate past. unknown
