rif. BK0194Newport Rhode Island August 11 181. Manuscript letter one page on a folded sheet signed in Wilcox's name by Thomas Williams as agent. 7 ¾ x 9 ¾ inches. Old folds light toning and minor marginal wear. Very good. An early appeal under the landmark pension act of March 18 1818 the first federal legislation extending lifetime pensions to needy Revolutionary War veterans who had not been disabled in service. Benjamin Wilcox a former lieutenant in the Rhode Island Continental Line had applied almost immediately after the law's passage submitting his claim before a Newport judge in late March. Nearly five months later having received no response he wrote directly to Secretary of War John C. Calhoun: "To my great disappointment I have heard nothing of it since. If lack of evidence has been the cause I think I should have heard so. But this was deemed hardly possible by my friends after having given in one of two commissions that I have the honour to have held & such other evidence of services poverty & inability to obtain a livelihood from old age & weakness as the law appeared to require." The new program attracted far more applicants than anticipated forcing Congress to tighten eligibility requirements in 1820. Calhoun himself reported to Congress in 1823 that the War Department had not kept count of pension applications until August 1818 the very month Wilcox wrote demanding to know what had become of his claim. . unknown

1950rif. 201161950. Homelessness press photography archive 1951 to 1990s documents displaced people in American cities through images of soup kitchens public sleeping spaces roadside survival emergency shelters and encampments. The archive provides primary visual evidence for the study of urban poverty public welfare veteran reintegration housing insecurity and the changing visibility of homelessness in the second half of the twentieth century. Its strongest historical value lies in the range of settings recorded: postwar charitable food assistance men sleeping in parks and public spaces Vietnam veterans gathered beneath highway infrastructure shelter-based aid and women living in vehicles with personal belongings and pets. The archive consists of eight black-and-white silver gelatin press photographs from the United States dated from 1951 to the 1990s most measuring approximately 7.25 x 9 inches with several retaining original press captions or newspaper clippings mounted on the verso. The earliest image shows a 1951 soup kitchen scene assisting homeless residents. Later photographs show Vietnam veterans beneath an underpass using mattresses and boxes for seating; a Queens New York veterans' shelter where an African American veteran shops for clothing with a staff supervisor; and Gabrielle Mendosa resting on a mattress near the Miami River beside the encampment identified as "Tent City under the Xway." Additional images show men sleeping on park benches or lawns including a scene associated with the Boston Freedom Trail Walk for the Homeless two men attempting to sell recovered household appliances by the roadside and a woman identified as Lynn living in her car with her belongings and dog while seeking assistance. The photographs are significant because they record homelessness not as a single condition but as a set of lived circumstances shaped by food insecurity military afterlives public space shelter access informal economies and the absence of stable housing. The retained press captions and clippings connect the images to their original journalistic use showing how homelessness was presented to newspaper audiences across several decades. Minor edge wear light handling marks and typical press-photo surface wear; verso caption material and clippings present on several photographs; images remain clear and usable; overall very good. Concentrated documentary archive showing American homelessness from institutional relief to street encampment with particular strength in veteran homelessness and urban public visibility. unknown
rif. 10483Walnut Grove Confederate Veterans Association. Constitution undated records the organizational rules of a local Confederate veterans association and its efforts to preserve Confederate memory while maintaining fellowship and mutual assistance among former soldiers. The manuscript defines who could join establishes officers and administrative procedures and makes sickness death and funeral observance formal responsibilities of the organization. Its language documents the practical structure through which former Confederates maintained social ties after the Civil War and converted wartime affiliation into organized commemorative and benevolent activity. Manuscript "Constitution" for a Confederate Veterans Association at Walnut Grove possibly Tennessee undated. 5½ pages folio. Membership was restricted according to military service and discharge status: "All Confederate veterans who was honorable discharged from service is eligible to membership in this Association." The stated objectives combine remembrance fellowship moral conduct and assistance to members calling for "the Conservation of Confederate memories the formation of fellowship and the Cultivation of friendship between the veterans of the late Confederate War" and "the Exhibition of loyal respect to the recollection and Impulses of a Confederate past." The constitution further directs members toward "the Encouragement and practice of manly virtues" and "the Extension of reasonable aid and sympathy to fellow members in time of sickness and distress and in case of death the rendition of suitable funeral honors." It specifies officer titles and duties and establishes an order of business showing how commemorative aims were translated into recurring administrative practice. Particular attention to illness death and funeral honors places mutual aid alongside Confederate commemoration as a central purpose of the association. A few committee members are named on the verso of the final page offering possible evidence for identifying the organization and resolving the uncertain Walnut Grove location through further genealogical or local historical research. The manuscript therefore records not only the association's commemorative language but also membership qualifications governance committee activity and obligations to veterans in distress. Condition has not been independently assessed from the supplied information. The survival of the association's working constitution preserves direct evidence of how a local body of Confederate veterans defined membership organized its affairs and prescribed the remembrance of the Confederate past. unknown
