1804réf. 4622Offenbach: C.L. Brede 1804. Contemporary pink boards tooled in black with a floral ornament in the centre of both boards surrounded by a dotted frame paste paper pastedowns. The work is housed in a brown decorative paper slipcase. 32mo. With an engraved frontispiece an engraved title with a vignette and 8 full-page numbered engraved plates by Neubauer. Fine illustrated German almanac with a calendar and literary contributions including poetry a story in prose and several aphorisms. Most are signed only with initials but two have been signed by Von Münchausen. Each month in the calendar is accompanied by a poem. Several of these are listed at the beginning which means they were considered suitable to use in an Album Amicorum. The plates not accompanied by explanatory texts illustrate scenes from a theatre play and show Romantic scenes after paintings by Buchhöltz. The boards are slightly rubbed some discolouration at the top where the boards are not covered by the slipcase. The frontispiece and title page are detached but still present the page edges of the second half of the work are darker than those of the first half but the two halves likely belong together pencil markings on the verso of one of the plates and the last free flyleaf. Otherwise in good condition.l The children's world of learning 2484; not in Köhring; Lanckoronska-Rümann; Vandenhole. C.L. Brede, hardcover
1807réf. 4625Frankfurt 1807. 32mo. In der Jägerschen Buch- Papier- und Landkartenhandlung Contemporary green boards tooled in black with a central ornament on both boards surrounded by an ornamental border gilt edges. The work is housed in a decorative paper slipcase. With an engraved frontispiece an engraved title with a view of Frankfurt and 12 full-page numbered engraved plates in the calendar 1 for each month. 32 31 1 pp. Beautifully illustrated German literary pocket almanac which is among "den reizvollsten Erscheinungen dieser Art" Lanckoronska-Rümann. It was published from 1794-1825 and included copper engravings of widely read novels of the time as well as poems and aphorisms. The attractive and romantic plates in the present volume illustrate scenes from two books by Glatz: Iduna and Minona scenes from short stories by Kotzebue and scenes from Meyer's Unsere Kaufmannstöchter which was recently published at Leipzig in 1807. Extracts from these works are added as explanation to the plates. The work starts with a Jewish calendar then follows a list of works that were suitable to gift to young women at the end of the year. The present almaanc was likely also meant as a New Years gift as the engraved title says: "Geschenk zum Neuen Jahr". After the list follows the calendar and then the short stories poems and literary excerpts. Of interest to note is that almanacs in Germany often include suitable pieces in prose or poetry to use in a friend's Album Amicorum. The boards have been slightly rubbed some discolouration at the top where the boards are not covered by the slipcase. The slipcase is somewhat rubbed with a small hole at the bottom. Otherwise in good condition.l The children's world of learning 2528; Cf. 1825réf. 23474Paris 1825. 32mo. chez Janet Original publisher's pink boards gilt edges housed in a matching pink slipcase. With an engraved title page and 6 full-page engraved plates. 2 works in 1 volume. 2 24 2; 24 pp. Very beautifully produced and illustrated miniature almanac containing a calendar for 1826 and 12 short rhyming songs for children. They are set to the melodies of popular songs of the time which are mentioned at the start. The section with songs the Morale du cur was likely printed separately and could be added to a Calendrier of choice as both parts have their own title page. We have been able to trace two copies of the Morale with a Calendrier for a different year. The 1826 calendar however appears to be very rare as we have not been able to trace any other copies of it in institutions or sales records nor found any mention of it in reference works. The leaves are somewhat browned and foxed. The slipcase is slightly bumped at the bottom. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf. 1788réf. 8530aSole edition of this entertaining almanac for 1789 aimed at young people but presumably not children with a delightful suite of humorous and mildly erotic plates by François-Marie-Isidore Quéverdo. Each month is given an engraving several verses and songs with music. Among the latter is found 'Air de la negresse' — a three-verse song with music from or perhaps just inspired by Radet's 1787 opéra-comique La Negresse. Though recorded by both Gay and Carteret we have not located any institutional copy in the usual online catalogues WorldCat KVK CCFr JISC. Carteret 866; Gay I 112. 32mo 96 × 55 mm pp. 6 61 1 6 including 12 engraved plates by Quéverdo plus integral printed wrapper with engraved title and 'Remarques pour la présente année 1789' at front and imprint and decorative panel border at rear. Engraved throughout including music. Some pages closely cut just affecting ruled borders or touching the musical staves in a very few instances. Gilt edges stitched as issued loose in contemporary/original gilt morocco chemise. Wrappers very slightly rubbed and dusty but an excellent survival. [Jagot for] Boulanger.
