Also added to each volume is a part of a continuing extensive chronicle of Zeeland usually illustrated with folding plates. Present here are the volumes for 1777-1780 1785-1788 1790 and 1791-1792. The first volumes were published by Jan Dane but P. Gilissen took over after his death. 1710rif. 3853Rare Early 18th Century Boston Almanac This almanac for 1711 by Daniel Travis is as early a Boston almanac as one is likely to find now. It follows the traditional almanac formula of the time: eclipses for the year Sign of Man cut twelve calendar pages brief astronomical observations and a final page of books for sale by the printer. Very little biographical information is available about the almanac maker. The dates of both Travis' birth 1652 and death 1720 are followed by question marks in the standard references. It is known that almanacs bearing his name were issued for the years 1707 to 1723. Boston was shown as the place of publication for the series except for the years 1709 through 1716 where it was changed to "America." An argument was made in the Brinley Catalogue that the almanacs for 1709-1716 were actually printed by William Bradford in New York rather than Bartholomew Green in Boston as the others in the series. Refuting that argument is the cut of the Sign of Man appearing in the 1709-1716 versions of the Travis almanac – it is the same as those in other Boston-issued almanacs by Green Reilly 1784 rather than those used in Bradford's New York almanacs during the period This example contains eight leaves – as called for in Drake – with the final page being "Advertisements" for Husbandry Spiritualized and The Constables Pocket-Book both for sale at Boone's shop in Corn-Hill. Other references cite an additional four pages presumably two more leaves of advertisements. A rare Boston almanac. While a number of institutions hold examples RareBookHub notes no examples of any Travis almanacs. 1772rif. 195273Paris: Gueffier 1772. An apparently unrecorded publication in an elaborately embroidered binding A musical almanac absent from bibliographies and untraced in institutional holdings here intricately bound. The amorous theme of the lyrics intended for familiar melodies and game for unmarried players are echoed in the binding's motifs of love. An acrostic spelling "Louise" suggests the name of the beloved whom the title page declares was the original reader. The contents comprise songs for each month and sign of the zodiac. These are set to familiar airs apart from one "La Terre bon conseil aux rois" which does not yet have music to accompany it. A calendar for 1772 records feast days and lunar phases. Its "New Game of Oracles" includes a printed numbered chart forming the game board. Players select a number while blindfolded to reveal a song for either a bachelor or mademoiselle. A number of almanacs were published under the name Dumeny or Dumenil. Gueffier published more than 20 almanacs between 1741 and 1774 many of which had similar musical or amorous tones. Neither Saffroy nor Grand-Carteret record this publication though the latter records an almanac of the same name published by Cailleau in 1774 521. As with the present almanac no copies are traced of this later publication which may be a reprint. Quadragesimo-octavo 88 x 50 mm pp. 74. Woodcut ornamentation throughout. Contemporary binding of cream silk spine couched with vertical passing threads boards framed with fine vertical strips of metal plate enclosing wide arabesque border of passing threads couched in wave-like arrangement metallic passementerie to board fore edges front board with lovers' knot and crossed arrows top winged flaming hearts in pink and green silk rear with pansies or violets in purple pink yellow and green silk blue silk pastedowns gilt edges. Outer corner of front cover very slightly stained and fraying a ribbon border inside lower cover detaching the mirror intact but its tin backing turned to powder and shedding slightly through the spine. A delightful almanac in a fetching embroidered binding which expresses the golden sun of the harvest abundance and joy. In pictures and verse this almanach galant relates love’s approaches evasions and eventual conquest using an extended military metaphor. Hence captions like “the diligent vigil the gracious combat marauding cupids a lucky rally the double attack the capitulation” etc. grace the hardly warlike images. The women in petticoats ribbons and flowery hats wear the latest fashions. In an unusual modern touch the image of the etched title showing a couple in a boat with a fortress and galleon in the background continues behind the title lettering. The engraved illustrations of courting and sometimes modestly contorting couples are in dark vivid impressions. In this copy unlike the Grand-Carteret copy the sixth and seventh plates were printed on the same sheet in the wrong order and thus the captions are mismatched. The embroidered cover of the binding was applied slightly awry on the lower cover. OCLC lists the BnF copy only. Cf. Oesfeld 1785 showing the projected Kiel Canal 12 numbered etchings illustrating the 12 months of the calendar by Daniel Chodowiecki. Text of all pages printed within a frame with small corner pieces. 240 pp. Rare almanac for 1787 from a series of Berlin almanacs that appeared under various titles from 1769 to 1813. The almanacs could be acquired with etched plates illustrating the 12 months by the greatest German book illustrator of the 18th century Daniel Chodowiecki. He was director of the Berlin Academy of Art and worked for the Berlin Genealogischer Kalender or Almanac Généalogique from 1770 until his death in 1801 as well as for other almanac publishers. Chodowiecki was given free rein to choose the subjects of the 12 plates always in the calendar section of the annual almanacs. He often chose popular plays; in the present work his 12 illustrations depict scenes from the play Die Jäger Chasseurs by the German actor and playwright August Wilhelm Iffland 1759-1814 published in 1785. The subject of each illustration is explained in a 7-page "Explication des estampes". Also included is an engraved portrait of the young Princess Frederique Charlotte Ulrique Catharine of Prussia 1767-1820 who would become Duchess of York and Albany through her marriage to Prince Frederick King Georges second son in 1791. The folding map depicts the projected route of what is today known as the Kiel canal completed in 1784 which joints the North Sea to the Baltic. The binding shows signs of wear some sequins are lost the silk is somewhat soiled Some sequins lost silk soiled occasional slight foxing and staining with a tear along the gutter of the map. It is the last almanac using the terminology of the French Revolution before Napoleon Bonaparte 1769-1821 was crowned Emperor of the French on 2 December 1804.This almanac contains a wealth of information concerning the organization of the administration of the French state in the first year of the First French Empire. It comprises the names of the main dignitaries in France and abroad mentioning i.a. Thomas Jefferson as President of the United States of America the public officials in Paris and in the provinces the magistracy the clergy the army officers etc. as well as the usual subjects present in most almanacs such as annual fairs stagecoaches and timetables. The family of DHoury had started with the annual publication of the famous Almanach royal which appeared under this title from 1700 to 1792.In 1791 Testu took over Debures printing house and in 1792 the title of the almanac was turned into Almanach national de France due to the new political situation caused by the French Revolution. After Napoleons coronation to emperor in 1804 its title was subsequently changed into Almanach imperial. The development of steamships as well as the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 would almost completely deprive Saint Helena of its great importance as a supply station. In 1840 a naval station was established for the Royal Navy's campaign to suppress the slave trade. By 1 December 1849 15067 slaves had been brought to the island. Roughly a fourth died on the island with the rest emigrating to Jamaica British Guiana and Trinidad.Starting with the natural history of the island the almanac describes the geology of the island and lists the birds and fish that can be found. The rest of the almanac describes the feasts and festivals for the year 1850; lunar cycles; climate of the island; tides; the family of Queen Victoria; the British cabinet; the political military and ecclesiastical government of the island as well as the British naval command in West Africa; customs and judicial fees and penalties; ordinances; local institutions and societies; and a list of local miscellaneous information. The printer appears to have aimed for a full page; for instance placing a table of the height of several hills and peaks below the regional naval hierarchy instead of near the geographical description whereas a table of geographical distances is placed under the header "local miscellaneous information".With the bookplates of the barrister Alexander Meyrick Broadley 1847-1916 famous for being the defence lawyer for the Egyptian nationalist Ahmed 'Urabi 1841-1911 and of the legendary superspy Sidney George Reilly 1873-1925. Binding lightly worn at the hinges; a very good copy.
