From the library of Cardinal Étienne Charles de Loménie de Brienne 1727-1794 Minister of Louis XVI Archbishop of Toulouse and of Sens. A friend of Voltaire and a member of the Académie Française Brienne wielded significant power as as head of the Finance Ministry which earned him many enemies. He died in prison during the French Revolution despite having renounced Catholicism in 1793 presumably as an attempt to save his life. Quarto on a folded folio sheet. Light dampstaining. London: Printed by Charles Bill and the executrix of Thomas Newcomb deceas'd 1708. 417-419 1 pp. Folio 10-3/4" x 7". Disbound bifolium. Light toning leaves starting to separate at head negligible light foxing to margins of first page. $450. The first printing of the Coinage in American Plantations Act of 1707 which sought to regulate currency in the American colonies. An attempt had already been made to resolve the "inconveniences" and inconsistencies of the diverse array of currencies by royal proclamation in 1704. "Rather than inspired by altruism toward the colonists" the authors of the proclamation "were much more concerned that there be a stable currency to pay the English merchants" Mossman. The proclamation was largely ignored by the colonies and openly defied by Massachusetts prompting its codification by Parliament in the present act. Despite the punishment of violators with imprisonment and fines resistance to the legislation continued. Acts such as these were compiled over the course of a session and bound afterwards.
