1918réf. 33679Belp-Bern: Promachos-Verlag 1918. First edition. Softcover. fair. Octavo. 119 1pp. Uncut. Original printed wrappers with red and black lettering on front cover. Publisher's logo on title page. This work was written in 1918 at Brest-Litvosk during the negotiations between the new Soviet government lead by Lenin and Trotsky and the Kaiser’s army while the Russian front was falling apart with Russian soldiers evacuating the front in the face of a German onslaught. In order to save the situation and prevent the collapse of the Revolution Leon Trotsky Soviet Commissar of Foreign Affairs was dispatched to the front to start these negotiations on behalf of the new revolutionary government. The Soviet government was under attack not just by German imperialism but by those on the left who attacked even the very idea of negotiations with imperialists. This left wing opposition was manifested also inside the Communist movement in Germany as well. Confusion reigned on both sides of the front. This booklet was written and addressed in large part to these German workers and soldiers who were confused by the Bolshevik and Soviet negotiations with representatives of their own ruling class. The Comintern later translated and distributed this book throughout the world. Despite this very few copies have survived the Stalinist purges of the Communist Party in the 1930s. This copy is the first Swiss edition published the same year than the German one 1918. Wrappers creased age-toned and partly chipped along edges. Corners bumped thus slightly affecting pages throughout. Tip of upper and lower corners of very first pages creased throughout. Moderate age-toning along paper margin. Text in German. Wrappers in overall fair interior in fair to good condition. Promachos-Verlag unknown

1930réf. 035896NY: Scribner's. 1930. The first American edition with Scribner's "A" on the copyright page. With the 1930 ownership signature of Joseph Barnes. We can offer no direct provenance but a Joseph Barnes author of Willkie: The Events He Was Part Of The Ideas He Fought For was a translator of Russian authors for a number of years and a recipient of the PEN translation award. According to his obituary in the New York Times in 1928 he made an extensive tour of the Soviet Union on which he reported for The New York World. On the staff of the Institute of Pacific Relations from 1931 to 1934 he visited Russia Manchuria Japan and China; he edited “Empire in the East” by 12 members of the American Council of the Institute published in 1934. Barnes joined The Herald Tribune in 1935. He went abroad as Moscow correspondent in 1937 wrote a series on Siberia in 1938 and then went to Berlin as correspondent. He returned to the U.S. at the end of 1939 and in 1940-41 was foreign news editor. From 1941 to 1944 he served as deputy director of the overseas branch of the office of War Information. In 1951 he cited his clearance for that position to counter accusations from McCarthy's House Un-American Activities Committee. He eventually joined Simon & Schuster as an executive editor. Again we can not prove that this Barnes is that Barnes. A New Republic review of the book from 1930 is laid in much acidified and split into pieces at the folds. The book itself shows mild foxing to the prelims fading to the board edges and spine and handling to the covers including a partial cup ring. The binding is sound. A very good copy lacking the dust jacket. Unless otherwise noted our first editions are first printings. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Scribner's hardcover

The author at the time of his writing the book was the minister of foreign affairs of revolutionary Russia. Steffens introduction parses Western interpretatons of Trotsky's message very nicely. Messages from Russia do not penetrate the Western facade run by the USA and the UK. But there were no thermonuclear weapons in 1918. There was only the carnage of the Western front in France. réf. 19924No details of date place or recipient. Breslau Congress 1895. . The two parts apparently from different letters are both on bifoliums: the first numbered '2' is 4pp. 12mo; the second numbered '5' is 4pp. 16mo. In good condition lightly aged. The second bifolium signed at end: 'Best Wishes to Mrs C. Yrs J B. Askew'. Written in a neat if somewhat eccentric hand. The first bifolium begins: '… is very sore. Nothing will be done at the Congress except Bebel August Bebel 1840-1913 German socialist will speak and move a resolution to the effect that the Party stands by its present program and tactics. There has not been a word paid as to the possibility of asking B. to reconsider his position in the party. I think after K's book this would be unnecessary. K's position is so much the stronger it must win. And his book according to Dietz the publisher is selling faster than B's which few people expected. I am going to review the book in the Social Dem. next month or so I think. I think of making it a general review of the Controversy – whether this will be possible or not I dont know.' The first part continues with reference to '<Macrosty>'s Review in Fabian news'; 'the suicidal manner Justice is running an anti-Semitic campaign' he has 'written to say they must choose between Soc: Dem: & Anti-S. Either the Jews are the principle evil or capitalism'; Hyndman who is 'at the old game again'. He is 'going fm the Congress to Hannover tonight for the week' and will 'write an acc. In Justice and possibly the Newcastle Daily Leader a rather Whig organ from a non party standpoint'. The first bifolium ends with news from Germany 'full of scandals here ministerial crises- official denials. So on.' concluding with a reference to 'Dr. von Miquel Johann von Miquel 1828-1901 – Prussian Finance Minister & Ex-Communist & friend of Marx – now organizer of the Anti-Soc: Dem: campaign' who is 'much implicated in he press activity of a certain von Zedlitz who …'. The second bifolium begins: '… Julius Motteler speak I have just had a letter from Bach who is very despondent over the S.D.F. Which he says is so stupid. He was very angry with their tactic in the Labour Rep: Conference as he asked <Gulch> why he didnt put a motion forward condemning the war as he thought they ought to lay stress on that rather than on resolutions about the class war – but <Gulch> told him he hadnt time. I must say the S.D.F. Are maddening with their silly abuse of the I.L.P. You have seen they accuse the I.L.P. of treachery. I wrote a letter to Justice protesting against this & defending the I.L.P. on the strength of what I had seen in Justice.' He continues with reference to '<Basc>'s article in the May Day no. of “Justice”' and the relative threats posed by England and Russia. 'Russia now is proceeding very rapidly on the lines of capitalistic development and it is not impossible that the autocracy may derive a fresh lease of life from it – especially as the middle class are more afraid of the proletariat than of the autocracy'. He ends on the questions of 'the minutes of the Congress of the German Party' and 'the result of the Parl: Com: on municipal Trading'. No details of date, place or recipient.
