1918réf. 87406Granite City IL: Съюзната Соц. Книжарница и Печатница = Union Social Bookstore and Printing House 1918. First Bulgarian Edition in America. 12mo. Brown woven cloth titled in black on spine and front cover; 134pp. Trace of rubbing at spine ends still a tight Very Good or better copy. Translation into Bulgarian of Trotsky's "The Bolsheviki and World Peace" made from the English version published by Boni & Liveright earlier the same year. The Boni edition was in fact a new translation from the German of Trotsky's 1914 pamphlet "The War and the International." Whether this translation was made with Boni & Liveright's permission or even knowledge is questionable though the verso of the title page does credit B&L with the original copyright. Granite City Illinois just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis in the extreme southwestern corner of the state was founded in 1896 as a company town by the Niedringhaus Brothers manufacturers of graniteware kitchen utensils. Between 1906 and 1908 the city became a destination for immigrant laborers from Bulgaria Macedonia and Hungary; by the early 1910s it was known as the Bulgarian Capital of America boasting the country's only general-circulation Bulgarian-language newspaper. The presence of so many working-class Slavic speakers made Granite City a natural target for radical organizing and a number of socialist presses thrived there during the first three decades of the Twentieth Century. Like all Granite City imprints we've encountered the current title is scarce and is of special interest for likely being the earliest Slavic-language printing of Trotsky's text in North America. 1928réf. 331684Dresden: Avalun - Verlag 1928. Hardcover. 286p. plus unpaginated index later printing 8.-12. Tausend of the 1927 first issue. Hardbound in 9x5.5 inch openweave raw linen boards with cover and spine titling in orange top edge tinted red with a place-keep ribbon bound in. Still a handsome item but spine panel is faded and very dusty lettering remains legible extremities are faintly edgeworn and casing bears a few dusty fingerprints that do not brush off. Most irritating flaw is that the title-page bears partially erased pencilled information this too still legible whence we get our datings of presswork. Paperstock is largely alkaline but rather pulpy and these attempts at erasure which we have made slightly worse mostly have roughed-up paper's texture. Publisher supplied no printed dating at all FYI. On the plus side hinges are good endpapers and half-title are sound and clean and no markings or erasures will be found in textblock. Fair to good copy. Avalun - Verlag hardcover books

Near Fine with light wear and mottling to cloth light offsetting to free endpapers and ownership signature to front free endpaper. In a Near Fine dust jacket price of $2.50 intact and crossed through with pen with sunned spine panel light wear and vertical crease to front flap. A beautiful copy of this sharply-designed book an important and to some extent prophetic Marxist text. Trotsky wrote his denunciation of the new Soviet regime in exile after losing a power struggle with Stalin. The postscript to his introduction notes that the manuscript had been completed before Stalin's show trials kicked off the Great Purge and so "the proceedings of the trial could not be evaluated in its pages." The translator Max Eastman had personally observed the conflict between Trotsky and Stalin during a stay in the Soviet Union taking Trotsky's side and later becoming a friend. They remained friends until the former commissar was assassinated in Mexico in 1940. Doubleday, Doran & Company unknown books
