1968réf. 170562Port-au-Prince: Presses Nationales d'Haiti 1968. Inscribed by the Haitian dictator "Papa Doc" to Alan Whicker First edition presentation copy inscribed by the author to the British journalist and broadcaster Alan Whicker during his visit to Haiti in December 1968: "To the friend of the First Black Republic Mr Alan Whicker. In souvenir of his short stay in the land of Quisqueya. Sincerely" signed by Duvalier and dated 7 December 1968. Whicker had travelled to Haiti to film Duvalier for Whicker's World gaining unusual access to the notoriously reclusive dictator. He interviewed Duvalier at the presidential palace and accompanied him through Port-au-Prince producing Papa Doc: The Black Sheep broadcast the following year and among the best-remembered programmes of Whicker's career. In a 2002 interview with Rachel Cooke for The Observer Whicker recalled Duvalier "giving me books of his poetry". Revisiting the encounter in Alan Whicker's Journey of a Lifetime 2009 he confirmed that Duvalier had inscribed a book for him repeating the opening words "To the friend of the first black republic". Published under Duvalier's earlier pseudonym "Abderrahman" Souvenirs d'autrefois gathers writings dating from 1926 to 1948. They span the period in which Duvalier became involved in the Haitian nationalist and noiriste movements notably through the circle around Les Griots before his election to the presidency in 1957. Published eleven years into his presidency the collection retrospectively presented these early writings as part of Duvalier's intellectual and political development. Octavo. Photographic illustrations one folding. Original red leatherette spine lettered in gilt red silk bookmarker. With dust jacket. Foot of front joint just starting but firm foxing to edges and endpapers; jacket spine faded foxing to head of panels and verso: a very good copy in like jacket.
