A very pleasing and collectible set of this important work. A BEAUTIFULLY BOUND COPY OF THE EDITION. A HIGHLY IMPORTANT HISTORICAL WORK. It is especially unusual to discover a copy so firm and sturdy and in bindings clearly made for a gentleman of import and wealth. Charles Kendal Adams in his Manual of Historical Literature perhaps best describes this important work “This work. has enjoyed the rank of a classic in historical literature from the day of its completion to the present time. In point of clearness elegance and simplicity of style it has never been surpassed.” This edition features many corrections by the author. Hume’s original corrections were not so much on factual matters dealing with dates or events but an attempt to soften or correct some seditious Whig sentiments that he had allowed to creep into it. Speaking of his first edition Hume admitted “I am sensible that his writings were too full of those foolish English prejudices which all nations and all ages disavow.” The work is considered by many to be the first truly great history of England and that although historically imperfect of outstanding intellectual conception. Smollett continues it from the Revolution. For Hume it was not a simple chronicle of events but instead an attempt to trace the many steps leading to the state of England as it was in his present time. He views history not only as a chain of actions and reactions but delves as well into the material and intellectual state of the nation throughout the various points of the time period covered. Smollett carried through in the same vein. Printed for T. Cadell; C.J.G. and F. Rivington; Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown and Green et al. hardcover
1844réf. ST19249London: Richard Bentley 1844. FIRST EDITION. 220 x 138 mm. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2". Four volumes. HANDSOME BURGUNDY MOROCCO BY BAYNTUN stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-ins covers with triple gilt-ruled frame interlinking with a triple-gilt-ruled diamond raised bands with gilt dots gilt ruled compartments with gilt diamond shapes gilt lettering gilt-ruled turn-ins with a floral tool at each corner all edges gilt. With 18 portraits as called for four of these with hand coloring and EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH AN ADDITIONAL 60 PLATES. Only the barest hint of wear to extremities spines just a shade darker than covers a handful of portraits a bit foxed but A FINE SET clean and fresh internally the bindings lustrous and the set obviously very little used. This is a very attractively bound set containing the biographies of 38 notable Englishwomen extra-illustrated with plates depicting some of the people and places integral to the subjects' lives. Covering the period from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I to the 18th century these four volumes include many women of noble birth and position such as Arabella Stuart Elizabeth Cromwell and Elizabeth Stuart Queen of Bohemia; poets and artists such as Susanna Centlivre Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and Mary Beale; and women famous for their fantastic deeds such as Jane Lane who assisted Charles II during his escape after the Battle of Worcester. Our author Louisa Stuart Costello 1799-1870 was a miniaturist poet and writer of biographies travel stories and fiction. According to DNB "her biographies of royal and noble women--which clearly traded on the popularity of similar works by Lucy Aikin the Strickland sisters and Mary Anne Everett Green--were creditable examples of this literary genre and generally involved some original research." For the present work Costello relied heavily on access to the library and papers of the duke of Devonshire whom she thanks in her introduction. In addition to 18 portraits called for in the contents several of which were drawn by Costello herself this set has been "grangerized" with 60 additional plates that further illustrate the life and times of these illustrious women. The lustrous bindings by an eminent British firm are an additional source of pleasure making a beautiful appearance on the shelf. Richard Bentley unknown

1819réf. ST19158Halesworth Suffolk: Printed and sold by T. Tippell 1819. FIRST EDITION. 216 x 133 mm. 8 1/2 x 5 1/4". xvi 2 116 pp. Contemporary rose-pink calf decorated in gilt and blind smooth spine with compartments densely diapered in gilt two black morocco labels marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Front pastedown with engraved armorial bookplate of Sir Alfred Sherlock Gooch; verso of front free endpaper and half title with ink signature of Thomas Sherlock Gooch. ◆Joints a little rubbed at the top leather a bit smudged and marked minor intermittent foxing but a clean and very fresh copy internally in a once very pretty binding that is still quite appealing. Set in the ninth century on the coast of Suffolk "between the sea and the river Ald" this long-form poem tells the story of a brutal Danish invasion upon a Saxon village. As DNB tells us the work "was first issued by subscription but its success induced a London publisher three months after its appearance to undertake an edition for the public. In 1820 Nathan Drake in his Winter Nights . . . reviewed it at length and claimed for Bird the same rank in literature as that attained by Robert Bloomfield" a working-class and self-educated writer like himself. A native of Suffolk James Bird 1788-1839 trained as a miller then became a bookseller and druggist as well as the father of 16. According to DNB "Much of Bird's early poetry indicates an intimate acquaintance with Dryden and Pope and demonstrates the influence of Byron and Campbell but his later work is in a more original style." This copy was owned by one of the original subscribers Thomas Sherlock Gooch 1767-1851 whose family home was also located in Suffolk. This work is very rarely seen in the market either at auction or advertised by dealers. Printed and sold by T. Tippell unknown

11 leaves (of 12? - No half title, if one was ever present). 21 cm. Modestly soiled. Leather backed cloth boards. Goldsmiths'-Kress Library of Economic Literature: No. 7170. In Fog's Journal, an early news sheet, there was a call (by way of historical allegory) for the assassination of Robert Walpole and others. Walpole, the Earl of Oxford (1676-1745), was really Britain's first Prime Minister. He governed through a time of relative peace and prosperity, but not without controversies. In 1733 Walpole's influence received a profound blow. Serious frauds relating to excise duties were uncovered. He proposed to check smuggling and avoid fraud by levying the full tax on wine and tobacco, not at their point of sale, but upon their first removal from the various warehouses. "His opponents fastened on these proposals with irresistible force, and so serious an agitation stirred the country that the ministerial measure was dropped amid general rejoicing. Several of his most active antagonists were dismissed from office or deprived of their regiments, but their spirits remained unquenched." - William Prideaux Courtney in the 11th Ed. EB. Though intended as a defense of Walpole, this pamphlet does not say that Fog's Weekly Journal was wrong to attack him - only that they overstepped their bounds by calling for his assassination. Juggling the power of political protest in the public press with freedom of speech was always a tricky affair. Responding in 1734 to the concerns of Queen Caroline over these, and other controversies Walpole said not to worry too much about it: "Madame, there are 50,000 men slain in Europe, and not one Englishman." VERY RARE. W140.

" The Lisle Letters consist of the personal, official, and business correspondence of the household of Arthur Plantagenet, Viscount Lisle, the illegitimate but acknowledged son of Edward IV, during the years 1533 to 1540 when he was Lord Deputy of Calais. These seven critical years in English history were marked by the rise, ascendency, and fall of Thomas Cromwell and the letters reflect the mixture of passion, terror, and politics that was the court of Henry VIII. They also present the everyday concerns of the Lisle household. No other source provides such an abundance of detail about daily life - marriage, child rearing, education, clothing, food, and furnishing. The Lisle Letters are the Tudor world in microcosm."
