1900Royal octavo. Pp. 38, (1). Original printed stiff wrappers, bit thumbed. In a very good condition. ~ First edition thus. Extrait de la Revue de l'Université de Bruxelles (1899-1900). Jean Capart (1877-1947). One of his very first contributions on Egyptology, apparently his second, written at the age of 22. At the time of publication he was already a Doctor of Laws and was just appointed assistant Conservator in the Egyptian collections at the Musées Royaux. The article was published in February 1900 and is comprising of extracts from his doctoral dissertation which, apparently, was never published. There is a record of only one article that was published earlier, "Notes sur les origines de l'Égypte d'après les fouilles recentes", which appeared in 1899, also in Revue de l'université de Bruxelles. [Provenance:] Presentation copy, signed 1900 and dedicated by the author [to Egyptologist Prof. Baudouin van de Walle (1901-1988)] from whose library this item comes. Very rare. Not in Beinlich-Seeber. WorldCat locates a single copy, that in Bibliothèque de Genève. ~[Librarium of The Hague offers the largest and finest collection of Egyptological offprint monographs in the rare book market. With the acquisition in recent years of multiple Egyptological libraries (those of Prof. Herman te Velde; Prof. Mathieu Heerma van Voss, Prof. Baudouin van de Walle; Prof. Michel Malaise; Prof. Herman De Meulenaere; Egyptologist Jacobus Visser, and former Trustee of the Egypt Exploration Society, Stewart Dale White), we now hold several thousands of rare offprint monographs which were collected over many years by these scholars. Very limited in number when originally issued and fragile by nature, most are by now practically extinct and the scarce survivors are much sought after. We took upon ourselves to collate, catalogue, and identify each item in accordance with Beinlich-Seeber or Annual Egyptological Bibliography, in the hope that this collection will prove useful for scholars and collectors alike.
