1757rif. ST14844London: A. Millar; J. Dodsley; and W. Shropshire 1757. Second Edition. 222 x 140 mm. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2. Five volumes. Contemporary gray paper boards backed in sheep with unusual wavy edges raised bands black morocco labels with gilt titling. Front pastedowns with armorial bookplate of Francis Eyre of Warkworth Northamptonshire. Corners slightly bumped and edges a little tattered one spine with minor loss to leather in one compartment boards a bit rubbed but overall the contemporary bindings very sound and in excellent condition; the occasional small blemish a few marginal open tears one closed tear minimally affecting text but internally very well preserved in general. This is the first English translation of the memoirs of French statesman Maximilien de Béthune Duke of Sully undertaken either by Samuel Johnson or by best-selling female novelist Charlotte Lennox and offered here in the original unsophisticated and unusual bindings. A Huguenot of noble family Sully 1560-1641 was presented to the Protestant King Henri of Navarre when he was 11 years old and became permanently attached to that monarch until the king's assassination in 1610. Sully although a lifelong Protestant himself encouraged Henri to convert to Catholicism in order to become King Henri IV of France arranged for the marriage of Henri to Marie de Medici and served as a lifelong advisor and confidante to the king. His insider's views of this crucial period of French history make his "Memoirs" of continuing interest to scholars. Originally published in French in 1638 the first edition in English appeared well over 100 years later in 1756 a year before our second edition. The ESTC notes that the translator may have been Samuel Johnson but the book itself as well as later editions credits Charlotte Lennox ca. 1729-1804 author of popular women's adventure novels including "The Female Quixote." She was born in the American colonies but spent her working life in England where literary friends and supporters included the aforementioned Johnson. The bindings here are not extraordinarily attractive but they are interesting as specimens of an unusual slightly rustic design: the wavy edges where the leather and paper meet are clearly purposeful and add a playful element not usually seen in modest bindings such as these. A. Millar; J. Dodsley; and W. Shropshire unknown

Maximilian von Béthune Herzog von Sully Baron dann Marquis von Rosny geb. 13. Dezember 1560 in Rosny bei Mantes-la-Jolie Yvelines; gest. 21. He moved to various locations settling in Philadelphia in 1808 where he quickly became its leading portrait painter a position he held until his death. His form was perfect. I painted him for the City of New York 12 of July 1814." It is one of his most famous portraits now in City Hall New York. 1914rif. 6590Dardanelles: Unpublished 1914. Hardcover. Good. pp 48 blanks. Water-stained Gallipoli naval diary culminating in the actions in the Dardanelles in February and March 1915: 'The Captain told us were were going to take part in the forcing of the Dardenelles. a real hot time shells dropping all round us and going "plonk" against the ships side.'. Red cloth-bound manuscript book water-damaged and lacking the backstrip although the binding is intact. Writing in pencil on the front paste-down Houghton who grew up on the Lancashire coastline records 'T Houghton. Log of HMS Albion' with a preliminary page which lists dates and locations visited by the pre-dreadnought battleship between August 1914- April 1916 before continuing to the main log also written in pencil. There are a few days to each significant date written in an easily legible hand with a full typed transcript accompanying the journal. Houghton departed Devonport in August 1914 sailing first to South Africa where the ship supported the action against German south west Africa and then transferred to the Mediterranean where Houghton proceeds to hostilities on February 19th 1915: 'The hands called this morning at 5.30am and went to breakfast at 6.45 ship cleared for action. proceeded to sweep the Bay of Giata Pete from where it is intended to bombard the forts of the narrows overland action sounded off at 10am the first shot fired at 10.20am the object being a signal station which was believed to be fortified in all we fired 8 rounds of ammunition.' The bombardment of 25th February is dealt with in great detail as 'Six ships in pairs made an attack on the forts engaging 4 and 6 on the way in closing to 3000 yards then turning and engaging 1 and 3 on the way out: The "Vengeance" and "Cornwallis" were the first pair. There was plenty of shells flying about and it was not known until after the engagement that a mine thrown up too soon from the shore had saved as as it was only 50 yards away. ammunition used by us 286 rounds of 6' The bombardment of 26th February describes 'a real hot time shells dropping all round us and going "plonk" against the ships side.' The diary breaks off on March 27 1915 with a few pages that follow this torn out leaving only their stubs - possibly through censorship since it was in the following month that HMS Albion beached on a sandbank and had to be towed clear with significant injuries and damage to the vessel. Houghton certainly survived the war since a newspaper clipping laid in records his death in the 1960s. Also present a World War II 7th Armoured division desert-rat badge and some photographs of post-war bridge building on the Elbe in Germany. Good 1914 Unpublished hardcover

Stunning binding.Sully left a collection of memoirs Mémoires otherwise known as the Économies royales 1638 written in the second person very valuable for the history of the time and as an autobiography in spite of the fact that they contain many fictions such as a mission undertaken by Sully to Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1601.Maximilien de Béthune 1st Duke of Sully Marquis of Rosny and Nogent Count of Muret and Villebon Viscount of Meaux 13 December 1560 – 22 December 1641 was a nobleman soldier statesman and counselor of King Henry IV of France. Historians emphasize Sully's role in building a strong centralized administrative system in France using coercion and highly effective new administrative techniques. While not all of his policies were original he used them well to revitalize France after the European Religious Wars. Most however were repealed by later monarchs who preferred absolute power. Historians have also studied his Neostoicism and his ideas about virtue prudence and discipline. J Rivington unknown
