Brought up in the Reformed faith Maximilien was presented to Henry of Navarre in 1571 and was thereafter attached to the future King of France. After studying at the College of Bourgogne he studied history and mathematics at the court of Henry of Navarre and on the outbreak of the Civil War enlisted in the Protestant Army. He displayed bravery in the field and exhibited a talent as an engineer. In 1583 he served as Henry's special agent in Paris. With the renewal of the Civil War in 1589 he served in the Army and was wounded at the battle of Ivry. As soon as Henry's power was established Maximilien received rewards in the form of estates and dignities. He was made the sole superintendent of Finances in 1598 and brought order to the countries financial affairs introducing several influential and important changes dealing with trade and economy. In 1599 Maximilien was appointed Commissioner of Highways and Public Works Superintendent of Fortifications and Artillery; in 1602 Governor of Mantes 1604 Governor of Poitou and in 1606 Duke and Peer of Sully. Sully's influence was widespread; he encouraged agriculture urged free circulation of produce promoted stock raising planned a system of canals and forbade the destruction of the forests. He strengthened the French military establishment promoting the construction of great lines of defences on the frontiers. He represented Henry at the Court of King James I arranged Henry's marriage to Marie De Medicis and helped to put down several revolts by the nobility. Sully's political power and influence ended with assassination of Henry IV in 1620. While he was unpopular with his colleagues he nonetheless exhibited a gifted executive ability throughout his career as well as an unbending loyalty to the King. Sully was largely responsible for the transformation in France between 1598-1610 when agriculture and commerce improved and foreign peace and internal order were maintained. . Revised Edition. 1638réf. 175404Amsterdam i.e. Sully-sur-Loire: Alethinosgraphe de Clearetimelee; Paris: Chez Augustin Courbé 1638; 1662. An eyewitness account of the reign of Henri le Grand First editions including the scarce privately printed editions of the first two volumes. The memoirs of Henry IV's chief minister known to history as the Économies royales are among the most comprehensive and influential sources for his reign. This is the Chatsworth House copy in the handsome binding of the 6th Duke of Devonshire 1790-1858. From the mid-1590s to 1610 Maximilien de Béthune Duke de Sully 1560-1641 was among the most powerful figures at the French court. He served in many of the highest offices including superintendent of finances and grand master of artillery. He thus became a crucial figure in the reconstruction following the French Wars of Religion effectively controlling royal finances and sponsoring massive infrastructure projects. Schumpeter judged him a "much greater and especially stronger man" than Colbert p. 169. Sully resigned the year after Henry's assassination in 1610 retiring to write the Économies at Sully-sur-Loire. Drawing on his extensive archive of official papers the work spans four volumes. The first two covering events up to 1605 were privately printed at his château in 1638. In this Sully was partially motivated by the publication of a rival history of Henry IV which barely mentioned him. He died in 1641 and it was not until 1662 that the final two volumes culminating with the assassination were published with the royal privilege in Paris. Brunet notes that the first impressions of Sully's original 1638 volumes are distinguished by printing the "Paralelles de Cesar et de Henry Le Grand" in roman type not italic. This copy prints the "Paralelles" in roman type although as with many other copies they are not exactly where Brunet places them - here they are at pp. 605-618 not pp. 469-476. William Cavendish 6th Duke of Devonshire was a prolific contributor to the Chatsworth House Library making many significant purchases from the collections of Thomas Dampier and the Duke of Roxburghe whose 1812 auction catalogue lists copies of the 1662 volumes. Cavendish's gilt armorial crest is on the front and rear covers of each volume while his "WSD" monogram is on the spines and the Chatsworth bookplate is on the front pastedowns. These volumes are recorded in the Chatsworth catalogue of 1879. 4 vols bound in 3 folio 336 x 221 mm. Title pages with woodcut device vols I & II title pages printed in red and black and with engraved vignette vols III & IV woodcut initials head- and tailpieces. Mid-19th-century red morocco spines ruled lettered and decorated in gilt covers with central armorial crests embossed in gilt turn-ins gilt light yellow coated endpapers edges gilt. Infrequent contemporary ink annotations and sidelining. Light wear to extremities faint toning to spines minor browning and foxing to contents a handful of repaired tears: a very good set indeed. This book the first of its kind tackles the problem from a theoretical approach and not in the conventional how-to or inspiring ideas fashion. Categorizing design into nine key elements such as space light display storageâ and offering new terminology to describe each area the author breaks new ground in the field of interior design in an approach that brings new vitality and clearer communication to a misunderstood and often free-wheeling design discipline. Drawing on more than 45 years of experience as an interior designer Anthony Sully provides the ultimate resource in insight and also explains many "best practices" from interpreting a clientâs brief to analyzing the building to setting up a design team and work schedule and a host of other practical aspects. Peppered through this toolkit are illustrations and explanations of good design and tips on often-overlooked questions designers must consider such as whether sunlight will reflect off computer screens. Written by a respected industry professional but in an easy-to-understand format this book is perfect for a wide range of people interested in interior design from students to DIYers to experienced practitioners.
