ref. 675816 February 1850; on illustrated letterhead. 4to 2 pp. Apparently the first leaf of the list only. On aged paper with wear and chipping to extremities but with text entirely legible. The letterhead carries an engraving 6.5 x 9.5 cm of a pile of books quill pen and ink pot with text advertising the 'Imprimerie Librairie et Cabinet de Lecture d'Aubin' printed on the open pages of one of the volumes. Beneath the illustration are the words 'LE MÉMORIAL D'AIX journal politique et littéraire' and there is further text to the right and left of it. In French. Written in two hands in light blue ink. A five-line initial note asking for the books to be quoted at the lowest possible price is followed by the list in another hand in two columns continuing to the end of the second page. Most of the items appear to be novels. The absence of signature and valediction suggests that the list is incomplete. See Image. 16 February 1850; on illustrated letterhead. unknown

ref. 2547722 September 1919. On ornate letterhead of The National Union of Railwaymen Unity House Euston Road London N.W.1. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. 1p 4to. In good condition on lightly aged and creased cartridge paper. Folded three times. The letterhead is quite an impressive affair with an engraving of ‘Unity House’ and lettering in a variety of styles. The letter is addressed to ‘W. D. Ross Esq. / Oriel College / Oxford.’ The ink on the ribbon appears to have been running out as the latter part of the note is faded. It reads: ‘Dear Sir / I have received your letter of the 18th instant and fully appreciate your object in writing me but unfortunately I am so full up with engagements at present I cannot possibly give you a date. / Yours faithfully / J. H. Thomas / General Secretary.’ The nine-day rail strike beginning at midnight on 26/27 September would end in victory by the union over the government. See Image. 22 September 1919. ref. 22988Printed heading Northumberland Miners' Mutual Confident Association with lines through and address changed in Burt's hand to 20 Burton Terrace Newcastle 17 Nov. 1906. Four pages 8vo bifolium good condition. "I rejoice that the N.L. Club is about to give you a complimentary Luncheon. The Committee asked me to propose so to speak the Toast of the Guests. Most reluctantly I had to decline mainly owing to the state of my health but partly too because I am uncertain whether I can be in London in time for the function. I trust and feel sure that there will be a great and appreciative gathering worthy of the guests and of the occasion. It seems almost an age since I saw you and I have often chided myself for not calling upon you. 'Circumstance that unspiritual god' to quote Coleridge has been very adverse to our meeting each other! But I have had many opportunities of inquiring about your health and I have heard reassuring accounts from friends. I am 'picking up' fairly well but I have to be careful and not try to do over much."
