Toned some small repaired tears using reversible archival ph-neutral paper-repair tape very good to near fine. Very Good. An interesting document of privateering in the Peninsular war this 'Public Instrument of Protest' documents a Portuguese captain and crew complaint in detail to an English notary. After sailing from Calcutta to Brazil and then from Rio to just outside of Lisbon their ship the 700-ton 'Oceano' was seized and comprehensively ransacked by a French privateer the 'Lion' out of Lorient. Most of the crew and passengers were offloaded onto a passing American vessel the 'Leda' bound for Lisbon. Meanwhile the 'Lyon' escorted her prize towards the nearest French port but before a friendly haven was reached they were both set upon by the brigantine HMS 'Achates'. The 'Lyon' escaped but the 'Ocean' was captured by Commander Morrison and the 'Achetes'. The 'Ocean' was taken to Plymouth and moored in the Hamoaze. The remaining Portuguese crew who had been forced to remain aboard the 'Ocean' by the French got a message to the 'Ocean's Master Dn. Ignacio Joze Martins and he and the boatswain made their way to Plymouth as quickly as possible. The sworn statement presented here is in English thanks to the translation given by Francisco Martins d' Magalhaens master of a Portuguese ship "now dwelling in Plymouth" The 'Oceano' sailed from Calcutta to Brazil arriving 10th February 1813. She left Rio on 4th April all was plain sailing until the afternoon of the 7th June off the Rock of Lisbon when the 'Lion' showed up first under false British colors then French. The fighting was fierce the privateer was driven off once but eventually the 'Oceano' was taken. The night of the 7th June was spent by the French 'conveying everything Moveable and Valuable from the Ocean to the Privateer'. The 'Leda' the US vessel landed the majority of the 'Ocean's crew including the Master in Lisbon on the evening of the 9th June.Monday 14th June the 'Lyon' engaged in a running battle with HMS 'Achates' and escaped but the 'Achates' did capture the 'Ocean'. Wednesday 16th June the 'Ocean' arrived in Plymouth under the watchful eye of the 'Achates'. Receiving the crew's message the Captain of the 'Ocean' left Lisbon for Falmouth and then Plymouth arriving on the 20th July. The document was dated 21st July 1813. Signed by Captain David Ross and two other parties; docket dated 1793 signed by Inspector Jeremiah Simmons. Stock exceedingly brittle with shallow chipping long closed tears along folds with old archival mending age-toning and light soiling as well as contemporary wax seal remnants. Overall a Very Good and legible survival. Cargo report executed in manuscript and dated November 9th 1792 listing materials shipped from Port-de-Paix Saint-Domingue modern day Haiti to Philadelphia for the firm Dutilh & Wachsmuth. The date places this report in the early days of the Haitian Revolution following the August 1791 enslaved peoples' revolt. The island was a vital source of commercial interests to Philadelphia and the burgeoning revolution was at the forefront of everyone's mind making this voyage and the survival of associated documents all the more significant. Dun cites one contemporary account "'No business is going on here' one letter told 'as every one is taken up with meetings committees and arming themselves.'" Dun p. 484. Goods delivered include wine sugar and coffee and were delivered to Dutilh and a handful of others including Captain Ross himself who received a hogshead of molasses. Ross eventually rose to the rank of Continental Navy Lieutenant during the Quasi-War with France and is remembered for commanding the privateer Belvedere guiding her back to Dover after an engagement with a French brig "leaving Belvedere with 50 round shot in her hull and her sails and rigging further shredded." 1849ref. List3334New York City 1849. Eight letters. Overall excellent. A small collection of letters to Boston-based grocers Silas Pierce & Co. sent from New York by steamboat with notes on covers or stamps reading “Boat Mail” or “Steam Boat Mail”. Five of the letters are from Wyckoff & Scrymser which was likely owned by a member or members of the prominent New York Wyckoff family the Scrymser surname first appears in the Wyckoff family history in 18411. Wyckoff & Scrimser discuss sweet and red wine prices “opperations in Trent” likely Trento Italy delayed shipments and issues with products; for instance: “The Harmony has not yet made her appearance neither the Aselia the non arrival of the latter is very perplexing but we see no remedy for it. . Annexed please find the sales of the Raisins amount Nett proceeds to your Co Nine Thousand One Hundred Seventy Four 06/100 Dollars which we hope may be found correct and satisfactory. There were a number of the parcels that were sold from the wharf but rejected which we were obliged to and store that the objections might not be known &c. The half boxes . did not have any external appearance of damage and could onky be known by opening. We rather congratulated ourselves that we have got off so well with this fruit as we had strong fears of the result.” December 29 1843 Also discussing business with Italy is a letter from Wm. A Lüs on behalf of Ferd. Baller & Co. of Messina which traded in citrus fruit: “The principal object of my friends is to introduce their Brand favorably into your market & their efforts to do this will alone be sufficient to secure you a superior article of fruit & other Goods; . they are also in the position of obtaining any other Sicilian produce at the most advantageous terms while at Messina or Palermo through their agent there.” August 30 1849 Demand for citrus products was high as it had been discovered late in the 18th century that citrus prevented and cured scurvy. Demand was so great in fact that some researchers partly credit the citrus trade with creating the Sicilian mafia.2 A letter from the Bank of Commerce in New York discusses credit and lastly Joseph Knowles possibly of the Massachusetts-based Thomas Knowles & Company sends an intriguing note: “Your favor of the 26th inst is rec’d For the intimations therein contained I cannot feel too highly flattered — Trusting that the above Jacob Little Co’s check on Messrs Gilbert & Sons for Three hundred eighty nine dollars $389 may remove all scruples – I would request that the shoes be shipped in good order by first sailing packet for New York”. October 27 1840 This is plausibly related to the investor and stock speculator Jacob Little 1794–1865 known for his short-selling tactics and generally considered as Knowles suggests unscrupulous.3 Of interest to researchers of mercantile history in the northeast and steamboat mail. 1 Mr. and Mrs. M. 1842ref. 6316London: T.R. Harrison 1842. Near fine. 38pp. stitched. Very minor bumps to top edge of first leaf light dust-soiling to outer leaves. A very rare treaty between Queen Victoria’s Britain and the “Oriental Republick of the Uruguay” printed in both English and Spanish in two parallel columns throughout. According to the text the parties were “mutually animated by a sincere desire to co-operate for the utter extinction of the barbarous Traffick in Slaves.for the special purpose of immediately attaining this object so far as relates to the total and final abolition of the Slave Trade of the Oriental Republick of the Uruguay.” The treaty is comprised of fourteen original articles plus three annexes totaling forty-six additional articles and four additional articles at the end covering a host of issues pertaining to the suppression of the slave trade. These issues included enforcement procedures the establishment of “Mixed Courts of Justice” “Regulations in respect to treatments of liberated negroes” and much more. With regard to slaves found on international vessels the two nations hoped for “permanent good treatment and a full and complete emancipation according to the humane intentions of the Parties of the Treaty.” The present treaty was part of a larger effort by the British Crown to put an end to the transatlantic slave trade in the first half of the 19th century; at this same time Britain had reached terms on a similar treaty with the Republic of Texas and other nations. The document is signed at the end in type by J.H. Mandeville and Jose Ellauri representatives of the two countries who originally signed the treaty at Montevideo on July 13 1839; the present work was “Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of Her Majesty” in 1842 likely due to bureaucratic delays. Uruguay would have been an important ally for Great Britain in monitoring the seas against the transatlantic slave trade given its position opposite the South Atlantic Ocean from West Africa. OCLC records just a single physical copy of this treaty at the University of Arizona. Cundall 2854. T.R. Harrison unknown books
