1896ref. 4969New York: Bartlett & Company The Orr Press 1896. Octavo 20.5 x 14 cm. 97 pages. Date derived from Water Street address on title page. An extensively illustrated trade catalogue of heating furnaces and cooking ranges. Before the 1830s gravity hot-air furnaces were produced according to the specifications of individual buildings. The first mass-market manufacturer in the United States was Richardson & Boynton established in 1837 and in business for more than a century thereafter. The company survived the competitive surge in home heating manufacturers in the decades after the Civil War Fuller & Warren of Troy for instance also advertised as "the oldest house in the trade" introducing innovations in fuel source efficiency flue design cleaning access and model size – to say nothing of aesthetic appeal – at a surprising rate. The foundries and shop buildings occupied a double block in Red Hook Brooklyn; corporate offices 232-234-236 Water Street were across the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan. By the 1890s Richardson & Boynton were advertising themselves as manufacturers of multiple designs of furnaces fireplace heaters laundry water heaters cooking ranges stoves and kitchen appurtenances such as kettles urns pastry ovens and steam tables. Owing ostensibly to climbing tunnage and wharfage costs the entire operation decamped to Dover New Jersey in February 1896. Elaborate illustrations with equally elaborate cutaways; specification charts. A bit of chipping to head and foot of wrapper at spine otherwise very good in two-toned brown wrappers with gilt decoration. Pages clean and bright. Scarce. OCLC locates three copies of all other Richardson & Boynton cataloguesbut none of this issue; Romaine page 363 for other issues. Bartlett & Company, The Orr Press unknown

1770ref. 97Birmingham or Sheffield 1770. Oblong folio. 390 x 220 mm. 15 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches. Vellum spine over decorative blue paper wrappers paper label with title in Italian on upper board and ink title in Italian on spine. Paper stock toned with age a few leaves with staining in the margin otherwise in good condition. Silversmith model book containing 80 full-page engravings of candles sticks and holders candelabra pitchers plates salt and pepper shakers serving utensils silverware and other household pieces. Each image is beautifully and careful engraved with rich detail and ornamentation. Each includes a printed product number as well as one in ink with a different item number and a price. Although there is no title-page or signatures of engravers this large sales catalogue appears to be English as some of the engravings have English words of explanation engraved in the text. The binding is definitely Italian and the paper label is in an Italian hand. The watermark is a "fleur de lis" pattern suggesting an international company manufacturing the silver. There were only a few English companies with the capacity to export at this time including silver works in Sheffield and Birmingham both of which by 1770's had established networks of dealers selling their wares across the continent. This catalogue with specific Italian connections is very unusual and suggests the scope of the business had reached export capacity by the third quarter of the century. The most important Italian silver makers at this time were Giardini of Rome and Venuti of Naples. . unknown

1828ref. 2401Gibraltar 1828. Good. 3pp. on a bifolium. Previously folded with separations. Tanned somewhat brittle. An interesting example of official communications concerning trade between colonial Cuba and the Spanish mainland. In this manuscript letter date March 14 1828 the new Spanish Vice Consul in Gibraltar writes to the Governor General of Cuba concerning several topics. These include the regulation of shipping to Cuba and by implication the rest of the Caribbean through Gibraltar particularly of French ships leaving Mediterranean ports. Also discussed is keeping track of individuals particularly merchants going to Cuba by means of identification papers and other documents. The consul also reminds the colonial government of the importance of documenting duties and tariffs paid for shipping cargo and goods. unknown
ref. 675816 February 1850; on illustrated letterhead. 4to 2 pp. Apparently the first leaf of the list only. On aged paper with wear and chipping to extremities but with text entirely legible. The letterhead carries an engraving 6.5 x 9.5 cm of a pile of books quill pen and ink pot with text advertising the 'Imprimerie Librairie et Cabinet de Lecture d'Aubin' printed on the open pages of one of the volumes. Beneath the illustration are the words 'LE MÉMORIAL D'AIX journal politique et littéraire' and there is further text to the right and left of it. In French. Written in two hands in light blue ink. A five-line initial note asking for the books to be quoted at the lowest possible price is followed by the list in another hand in two columns continuing to the end of the second page. Most of the items appear to be novels. The absence of signature and valediction suggests that the list is incomplete. See Image. 16 February 1850; on illustrated letterhead. unknown
