1781ref. ABC_50510Pressburg =Bratislava 1781. Ca. 46 x 32 cm. With an engraving of Pressburg Bratislava and an engraved title. A rare and highly evocative example of an 18th-century Preis-courant or commodity price current published in Pressburg modern-day Bratislava capital of Slovakia. Such documents produced at regular intervals often weekly served as indispensable instruments of commerce providing merchants and their correspondents with up-to-date market prices for a wide range of goods. The present work dated 2 April 1781 is a particularly attractive sheet. It combines a finely engraved panoramic view of the city with a densely organised tabular listing of commodities arranged in four columns on both sides. Prices are carefully entered by hand in ink in florins fl. and kreuzer kr. reflecting the customary monetary system of the Habsburg lands. The mixture of printed framework and manuscript additions is characteristic of privately published price currents which were distributed rapidly and updated locally to reflect current market conditions. The range of goods listed points to the thriving trade in raw materials medicinal substances and colonial produce. As was common practice in the 18th century many items are recorded using Latin nomenclature underscoring the documents relevance to apothecaries wholesalers and international merchants alike. Such lists offer a vivid cross-section of early modern trade from local agricultural products to exotic imports circulating along established commercial routes. At the time of publication Pressburg occupied a position of considerable importance within the Habsburg Monarchy. Situated on the Danube it functioned as a major trading hub linking Vienna Buda and the wider regions of Central Europe. Until 1783 it also served as the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary and as a major administrative and cultural centre where German predominated as the language of official and commercial communication. Its mercantile community comprising traders professionals and artisans played a key role in sustaining long-distance trade networks. The work has been folded the folds are slightly torn along the edges. Otherwise in good condition. unknown

1939ref. 180510Japan. circa1939. 103 name or business cards mounted on 17 window-faced card leaves a little faded and a few tears in an album 26.2 x 18.3 cm; green linen boards gilt decorated spine a little chipped and rubbed but in remarkable original condition. An album of Japanese name cards collected in the late 1930s apparently by Bruce Rogers who held a post at the University of Oregon. The name cards which are organized roughly in alphabetical order in a purpose-made album offer a fascinating insight into the network of contacts of a western resident in prewar Japan. They include cards presented to Rogers by journalists academics businesspeople diplomats and others. Though quite a number of his contacts are Americans or other foreigners the majority are Japanese. There are three cards from George Albert Makinson 1886-1972 and his wife presented at the time when Makinson was US Consul General in Osaka a post he took up in1938 and a card presented by Parliamentary Lower House member Honda Yoshinari 1871-1952. Some of the cards include inscriptions thanking Rogers for hospitality and one particularly interesting one is inscribed with a message of introduction from a Japanese acquaintance asking for Rogers to be allowed to be present during an air-raid drill in Tokyo an omen of the approaching war. . hardcover

Piccadilly "Foreign Ware House" in the Dec. 29 1882 issue of "The Pembrokeshire Herald and General Advertiser" a Welsh newspaper digitized and available online. One handwritten correction. 1876ref. 13129Philadelphia 1876. Chromolithographed trade card 3 x 6.5 inches. Minor wear paper and adhesive remnants on verso from removal from scrapbook or similar album. Overall very good. A bright and colorful trade card advertising one of Philadelphia's most successful businesses at the time of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in that city. John B. Stetson 1830-1906 was the son of a successful New Jersey hatter. After being diagnosed with tuberculosis and told he didn't have long to live Stetson traveled west to Colorado for the dry mountain air. Near Pike's Peak sometime in the early 1860s Stetson invented the cowboy hat -- lightweight wide-brimmed waterproof and made out of animal felt usually beaver or rabbit skins. Because it sat easily atop the head offered good protection from the sun could be used to fan the flames of open-air fires and could even carry water Stetson's "Boss of the Plains" style became the most popular hat in the American West. Stetson returned to Philadelphia in 1865 and set up a factory that would turn out millions of hats in the next century and a half. The present trade card emanates from the 1876 Centennial Exhibition celebrating the 100th anniversary of American independence. An illustration of two women and three men show them all wearing Stetson's trademark hats; his address at the time was 1748 to 1754 North 4th Street; his factory would eventually grow to encompass over nine acres and produce over two million hats a year. By 1886 Stetson was the most prolific hat maker in the world. unknown
