Located north of Napa County and San Francisco Clear Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake wholly within the state and at an age of 2.5 million years the oldest lake in North America. It is known as the "Bass Capital of the West" and has long been a destination for watersports and other outdoor activities as this pictorial travel brochure attests: "Lake and mountain scenery may be enjoyed comfortably from the resort or hotel of your choice and many vantage points are to be found on the winding roads which encircle the lake. For the more adventuresome horses are available to explore the miles of bridle paths or a different but equally compelling view may be obtained from boats of which every type from canoe to 60-foot yachts are at the disposal of the vacationer."
