1880ref. 118360Bendigo: The Company 1880. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Bendigo The Company 1880s. Quarto 8 pages with 6 illustrations of footwear and a large illustrated advertisement. Salmon-pink title-wrappers; acidic paper now brittle with a few edge tears and chips and minimal expert conservation in two spots; a very good copy. The catalogue record in Trove suggests 1895 but it also calls for 6 pages and says Bendigo is in NSW! Curiously newspaper advertising for J.H. Abbott and Co. Tanners & Curriers seems to cease in 1889 but we can find nothing to indicate if they went out of business then. The Company paperback

ref. 2547722 September 1919. On ornate letterhead of The National Union of Railwaymen Unity House Euston Road London N.W.1. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. 1p 4to. In good condition on lightly aged and creased cartridge paper. Folded three times. The letterhead is quite an impressive affair with an engraving of ‘Unity House’ and lettering in a variety of styles. The letter is addressed to ‘W. D. Ross Esq. / Oriel College / Oxford.’ The ink on the ribbon appears to have been running out as the latter part of the note is faded. It reads: ‘Dear Sir / I have received your letter of the 18th instant and fully appreciate your object in writing me but unfortunately I am so full up with engagements at present I cannot possibly give you a date. / Yours faithfully / J. H. Thomas / General Secretary.’ The nine-day rail strike beginning at midnight on 26/27 September would end in victory by the union over the government. See Image. 22 September 1919. On ornate letterhead of The National Union of Railwaymen, Unity House, Euston Road, London, N.W.1. unknown
