rif. jmc60Scrapbook. Very Good. Soft cover. ASSASSINATION DISASTER & CALAMITY c.1900-A PENINSULAR STOVE CATALOGUE REBORN AS A NEWS SCRAPBOOK. An unusual piece of American vernacular ephemera: a trade catalogue issued by the Peninsular Wood Stove Company substantially repurposed around 1900-1901 as a personal scrapbook of contemporary news and tragedy. Of the catalogue's 176 pages approximately 31 have been filled with contemporary newspaper clippings preserving reports of local disasters accidents deaths and other calamities in the Cincinnati area together with national news of the day. Of particular historical interest are the clippings concerning the assassination of President William McKinley in September 1901 providing a direct contemporary record of one of the defining events of the era. The compiler is unidentified although the choice of catalogue and the material assembled within it suggest a possible connection to someone who worked for represented or sold Peninsular stoves. The juxtaposition of commercial advertising and the immediacy of pasted newspaper reports makes the volume especially evocative of everyday information culture at the turn of the century. The underlying catalogue documents the products of the Peninsular Wood Stove Company a major American manufacturer of cast-iron gas and wood-burning stoves during the height of the country's industrial expansion. Its survival in this altered form gives the catalogue a second life as a record of the events and concerns occupying readers in and around Cincinnati at the beginning of the twentieth century. An uncommon and highly characterful example of early American scrapbooking and news ephemera combining industrial advertising local history and contemporary reports of disaster and national tragedy. About Peninsular Wood Stove Company-- during the golden age for American industry Peninsular was a giant in the manufacturing of cast iron gas and wood burning stoves. . Paperback
