1883réf. 174897London: Harrison & Sons 1883. A single copy traced institutionally First edition of this valuable collection of official papers over half of which concerns Admiralty patrols and slavery cases in the Zanzibar region. Many items of correspondence were sent by or to the influential Arabist Samuel Barrett Miles 1838-1914 the political agent and consul-general. Records show only the British Library's copy. For Britain curtailing the slave trade in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea was a means to consolidate control over the region. In 1873 it signed anti-slaving treaties with the Sultan of Muscat and after blockading Zanzibar Sultan Barghash bin Said al-Busaidi r. 1870-88. Throughout the 1870s the Admiralty bolstered its naval presence. Textual and statistical memoranda from Miles and others reported encounters by patrolling vessels with slaving dhows and fugitive slaves the seizure and destruction of vessels and legal proceedings. An important moment was the lethal encounter in December 1881 of HMS London with a dhow flying French colours. As related by Rear-Admiral Gore Jones Commander-in-Chief East Indies Station to the Secretary of the Admiralty "no one on London was expecting action and all were personally unarmed. The Arabs instantly fired and then rushed on board." London's captain Charles Brownrigg "fought like a lion" but was fatally stabbed through the heart pp. 188-9. The incident hardened British resolve; in the late 19th century slavers were increasingly forced to seek overland rather than maritime routes. The compilation also includes two documents concerning Persia a report of a man who had escaped from slavery in Mecca and a short despatch on the sentencing of a slaver submitted by Lynedoch Needham Moncrieff the acting British consul at Jeddah. Folio. Tables in text. Original blue wrappers spine and covers lettered in black. Losses at spine ends a few chips and light stains to covers contents clean: very good. The Caution to Bankers is a manifesto-handbook by one of the earliest trade protection societies in Britain. The bankruptcy system and its potential for exploitation was a key concern of the Friends who complain in the Caution of its lack of subtlety and the opportunities it provided for dishonest figures to "take the benefit of the insolvent and bankrupt laws easily arrange matters for making all appear fair and just when they come to be examined by the Judges and Commissioners" p. 31. Vizard together with Brougham as Lord Chancellor was in 1831 engaged on the long-anticipated project of removing bankruptcy from the jurisdiction of chancery and of establishing dedicated bankruptcy courts. A beverage of empire - the demise of the Chinese tea monopoly First edition covering material submitted by East India Company representatives between 1834 and 1838 - a crucial period during which Britain laid the foundations of its tea empire in Assam. The splendid maps incorporate the findings of explorers such as Captain Francis Jenkins and the observations of tea-growing made in China by the Macartney and Amherst embassies. The documents concern the key actors in the growth of Britain's formal tea empire including Jenkins the powerful Bengal civil servant William Hay Macnaghten and the members of the Tea Committee established by Governor William Bentinck in 1834. Pages 36-37 carry the text of the committee's momentous 24 December 1834 report announcing that the tea plant was indigenous to Assam: "We have no hesitation in declaring this discovery. to be by far the most important and valuable that has ever been made on matters connected with the agricultural or commercial resources of this empire." 1883réf. 188758China and Britain: 1883-1911. Prickly heat mosquitos coolies yelling and no ice every alternate day - makes life not worth living A voluminous record of the business and social affairs of Henry Whistler 1861-1951 a representative of the merchants Evans Pugh & Co. and the chair of the British Municipal Council. Offering an immediacy often missing from company archives it reveals a world in which personal relations greased the wheels of commerce and a life of long hours punctuated with intrigue and drama. Armed with a £100 life insurance policy Whistler arrived in Hankow in December 1885. After the obligatory tourism "Went through native city No ambition to go there again" - 23 December 1885 he settled into an expatriate life. He led the council from 1896 to 1897 and 1898 to 1904 was appointed the Dutch vice-consul in the late 1880s and served as chairman of the Hankow Club. His businesslike entries of varying lengths note important events and commercial information. Dozens of associates recur: Sir Robert Bredon the customs commissioner; personnel from many firms e.g. Tokmakoff Molotkoff & Co. the tea giant; Alexander Price the secretary of the chamber of commerce; and the veteran Scottish trader J. R. Reddie. Evans Pugh & Co. traded in hides rhubarb tobacco and tea and it later developed an interest in land sales. He notes orders and the names of brokers arrivals and departures and commercial gossip as well as costs and prices land auctions and other transactions. His colleague J. A. Hawes is a perpetual problem being "frequently under the influence of liquor and unable to attend to his business. Mr Behrend tells me that J.A.H. has been of no use in the tearoom this year" 26 June 1897 and 28 May 1901. The volume for 1896 includes a lengthy memorandum regarding extensions to Hankow's concessions. In Beijing in October Whistler made representations to Sir Claude MacDonald the British minister and Sir Robert Hart the head of the maritime customs on behalf of his firm and the municipal council. "HBM Consuls in this affair as well as in almost all matters treat British interests with great contempt" 7 October 1896. In 1897 Whistler married Emma Augusta Howard b. 1874 the daughter of a customs official. Later volumes reveal the strain his work placed on their relationship. In the summer heat or amid the Boxer threat he retreated to Lushan Kuling and Shanghai. Insubordinate servants "Dismissed my boy 'Afa' for cheek and squeezing" - 27 July 1887 and diarrhoea are part of the daily grind. Horseracing cricket and parties at Victoria Hall afford welcome relief. Whistler spent time in Britain in 1891 1895 and 1902-03 although whenever he was in Britain he still transacted business relating to his China affairs. "Having done more than my share of work for the British Municipal Council" 2 March 1905 he took his final leave in 1907 tipping in a copy of the RSVP card for his farewell dinner at the Hankow Club on 11 March. Other accompanying ephemera include his 1897 certificate of registration in Hankow and his wedding invitation. Together 29 Letts desk diaries including 26 octavo and 3 duodecimo. Legible manuscript entries throughout. Original green cloth spine and front covers lettered in gilt marbled endpapers and edges bookmarkers. Trunk 370 x 570 x 155 mm: lid lettered "H. 1853réf. BK0069Glasgow Scotland 1853. Autograph letter signed for John & Robert Tennent by G. R. Tennent to D. Gibb & Co. San Francisco. Received by the steamer Winfield Scott September 20 1853. 1 p. 8 ½ x 10 ½ inches. Light wear; very good. A Gold Rush commercial letter documenting the movement and valuation of California gold within the transatlantic financial system. Writing from Glasgow to the San Francisco firm of D. Gibb & Co. John & Robert Tennent acknowledge a remittance of gold dust valued at $5092 and explain why the transaction produced a poorer return than a conventional bill of exchange. The specie had been sold in London for £1001 12s. 6d. The firm then added sixty days' interest and deducted marine insurance in order to compare the net proceeds with the value of a draft. Their calculation left a balance of £15 18s. 6d. in their favor which they instructed the California merchants to include in their next remittance: "Referring to your remittance of gold dust we regret to inform you that as it was unauthorized on our part we presume that you cannot object to our placing the proceeds to your Credit under deduction of the difference between such proceeds and a remittance by Bill." The letter also records £174 9s. 7d. in freight payable at San Francisco on goods shipped aboard the Kate and refers to an enclosed summary of exports sent to California during the month of July. A concise but useful account of the practical economics of Gold Rush remittances showing the comparison between specie and bills of exchange together with the costs of interest insurance freight and transatlantic shipment. . unknown
1866réf. BK0123Smyrna Turkey 1866. Autograph commercial letter signed by Cousinery & Fils to Lanman & Kemp New York. Stampless folded letter carried by the Messageries Maritimes steamer Volga departing Smyrna November 9 and arriving at Marseille November 14. Blue oval Cousinery & Fils handstamp and circular "MARSEILLE À LYON" traveling-post-office transit mark dated November 16 on the reverse; black circular "NEW YORK / 45 / DEC / 61 / NOTES" December 3 arrival marking on the front assessing forty-five cents in depreciated United States notes equivalent to the thirty-cent gold rate; manuscript "18" debit marking also apparently miscalculated. 1 pp. 8 x 10 ¼ inches. Old folds; light wear; fine to very fine. A commercial letter documenting the export of Ottoman opium from Smyrna to the United States. Cousinery & Fils confirm the purchase and shipment of five cases for the New York drug firm Lanman & Kemp invoiced at 84360 piastres and balanced through a £671 draft on London. The merchants describe the Smyrna opium market as being in a "state of dullness" with little demand and only limited sales of old and new drugs. They nevertheless report rumors that a Dutch company had ordered another 150 baskets which might strengthen prices. Responding to instructions from New York they agree to suspend purchases for one month and cancel two intended November shipments. A memorandum on the reverse records recent shipments aboard the steamers Sardis and Sidore and calculates a total of 380 cases of opium sent to the United States during 1866. A concise record of the nineteenth-century opium trade connecting Ottoman producers European financial intermediaries and the American pharmaceutical market. . unknown
1876réf. 195373London: Eyre and Spottiswoode 1876. First edition of this collection of official documents and despatches concerning the expedition of Colonel Horace Browne launched to traverse China from west to east and consolidate the gains made by the Sladen expedition of 1868. Browne's party rendezvoused in Bhamo with the westward-travelling Augustus Margary whose murder soon after sparked a diplomatic crisis between Britain and China. Browne 1831-1914 whose most memorable feature was his large moustache left Calcutta in November 1874 and met Margary the following January. Continuing on to Yunnan the expedition encountered unexpected Chinese hostility. Scouting the route Margary and his local assistants were killed and Browne also coming under attack reversed course retreating to the safety of Rangoon. The ensuing crisis was settled by the 1876 Chefoo Convention which granted Britain further commercial concessions in China. Quarto 320 x 207 mm. Diagram and tables in text. 1865réf. 195501London: Printed by Harrison and Sons 1865. First edition containing several detailed reports of British expeditions undertaken in the early 1860s in search of a route into China via the Irrawaddy or Salween rivers. Among the papers is a long 1864 memorandum pp. 68-82 by Dr Clement Williams 1833-1879 the first political agent in Mandalay which draws on his explorations of the Irrawaddy. He argues strongly in favour of a trade route running by steamer along the river as far as Bhamo and onwards to Yunnan by road. Williams subsequently published Through Burmah to Western China 1868 and joined the Sladen Expedition of the same year. Two other accounts are by Lieutenants Gideon Colquhoun Sconce pp. 32-51 and C. E. Watson pp. 55-66 who both surveyed the upper course of the Salween between November 1863 and March 1864. Large quarto 321 x 204 mm. Tables in text. 1831réf. BK0165Salem Massachusetts: Salem Press Palfray Ives Foote & Brown 1831. 78 pp. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. Wrappers frayed at spine; light dampstaining at margins of a portion of the leaves at rear. Good. An early catalogue of the collections of the East-India Marine Society of Salem recording the maritime journals and objects gathered by Salem captains and merchants during the city's great period of overseas trade. Founded in 1799 by captains and supercargoes who had sailed beyond the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn the Society required its members to contribute to a cabinet of "natural and artificial curiosities" the collection from which the present Peabody Essex Museum developed. The Society moved the collection into the newly built East India Marine Hall in 1825 and this expanded catalogue appeared only six years later. The volume includes the Society's act of incorporation bylaws lists of members and officers a catalogue of its manuscript journals of voyages and an extensive catalogue of the museum. The voyage journals occupy pages 33-42 and document Salem voyages to ports throughout Asia and the Indian Ocean; the balance of the catalogue records the ethnographic natural-history and other objects brought home by the Society's members. This was a substantially enlarged successor to the Society's 1821 catalogue which ran to 100 pages; the 1831 edition extends to 178 pages and was followed by a further supplement in 1837. A national bibliography of American library catalogues records copies of the 1831 edition at only a small group of institutional collections.1 1 Robert Singerman American Library Book Catalogues 1801-1874: A National Bibliography Graduate School of Library and Information Science University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 1996 94. . 1825réf. BK0190Stockholm Sweden 1825. One large folded commercial sheet written on several panels with integral address panel to Messrs. Brown & Ives Providence Rhode Island endorsed "Pr. Brig Harvest" with Newport "SHIP" marking. Headed "Triplicate. Old folds and light handling wear very good. A commercial letter and account from the Stockholm mercantile house of Kantzow & Biel to Brown & Ives of Providence concerning the execution of a large order for Swedish iron. The firm reports that it is assembling a shipment of arranging its transport while the accounting on another portion of the same sheet records the value of the iron and related charges. The letter reports: "the contents giving us the desired opportunity of confirming you Your order for a Shipmt. of 200 Tons Iron to be ship'd & appointed and convoy which we shall of course prevail the commencement on." The letter dates from a period of rapid expansion in Swedish iron exports to the United States which had displaced Britain as Sweden's most important foreign market for bar iron. Britain had reduced its dependence on Swedish imports while American tariff legislation favored hammered iron from Sweden and Russia over British rolled iron. American demand became particularly important to the Swedish industry in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. The United States purchased approximately three-fifths of Sweden's iron exports in 1822 with mainly American vessels engaged in the trade. The account also records a credit entered July 28 "By your proportion of dividend in payment from the Swedish Government". Brown & Ives had longstanding claims against Sweden arising from American property seized during the Napoleonic Wars including tobacco and rice belonging to the firm taken from the General Hamilton in 1810.1 The Swedish government finally settled the American claims in July 1825 following years of diplomatic representations concerning the confiscation and sale of American property at Stralsund. The credit recorded here appears to represent Brown & Ives's share of that indemnity entered less than two weeks after the settlement was formally concluded on July 16. The correspondence thus brings together two aspects of Swedish-American relations in the immediate postwar period: the expansion of an iron trade increasingly important to Sweden's economy and the settlement of commercial grievances dating back fifteen years. The shift reflected the changing geography of Atlantic commerce as Britain's increasingly mechanized iron industry reduced its dependence on Swedish imports while the rapidly industrializing United States emerged as Sweden's principal customer. However American iron production expanded enough to challenge Sweden's position in the American market particularly beginning in the 1830s and 1840s. 1 Calendar of the Miscellaneous Letters Received by the Department of State Government Printing Office 1897 47. . unknown
