In 1835 the world's richest deposit of white crystalline marble was discovered in the area of Georgia then known as "Long Swamp Valley." As quarries moved into the area it soon became known as Marble Hill. Around 1880 the greater world became aware of these rich deposits and soon sought to take them over. Early in the 20th century Frank H. Sidall and H.C. Clement both Northerners looking to make some money in the "New South" created the Georgia Marble Company. By 1916 the Georgia Marble Company had purchased the Southern Marble and Stone Company and four more plant facilities at Marble Hill Nelson Ball Ground and Marietta. With the final purchase in 1941 of the Georgia Marble Finishing Works at Canton the Georgia Marble Company had achieved a virtual monopoly of this excellent supply of top-tier marble. Although it was purchased by a Canadian multinational company in 2003 the Georgia Marble Company continues to be the world's largest producer of marble products. 1910rif. 74949Philadelphia: A.F.C. Bateman Company ca. 1910. Original furniture salesperson catalog with 52 original photographs of offered products as well as many half-tones to fill it out. Period string-tied black cloth album 11 x 7 inches with printed paper cover label. Edge chipping to some pages and label on front with a piece missing. A few leaves at the fron have come loose but are still snug. Overall a very interesting album and it appears that no photographs have fallen out.Even though the A.F.C. Bateman Company is hard to track down one gets the idea that they were quite influential in their day as many current furniture companies still offer such things as a "Bateman Chair" etc. This particular catalog is focused entirely upon chairs. The label on front reads "Antiques and Reproductions" and judging from the photographs these are all reproductions of antique chairs. Many of the photographs have manuscript numbers or names. Many of the half-tones are of real antique American chairs and presumably the company would point them out and offer to have them made as well. A.F.C. Bateman Company hardcover
