rif. 21914Very Good. KEY WEST SHOPPING AND VACATION GUIDE A vibrant mid-century time capsule of the Island City at the end of U.S. 1. This comprehensive guide authored by Sue Jones captures Key West during the final years of its intimate pre-mass-tourism era. Boasting bold nautical graphics and a staggering 18-page business directory the booklet documents a community where Havana was a ferry-ride away and 'Quaint Bahaman Architecture' defined the local aesthetic. Accompanied by the original newspaper supplement from the 'Coral Tribune' this set provides an uncommonly deep look at the commercial and social geography of 1957 Florida. KEY FEATURES Visuals: Features bold high-contrast woodblock-style graphics including a full-page aerial view of the island and stylized illustrations of the Municipal Aquarium and local landmarks. Binding & Content: Original stapled pictorial wraps in a striking blue and yellow nautical motif. 52 pages comprising local history sightseeing routes and an exhaustive 18-page Business Directory capturing the town's pre-digital infrastructure. Associated Ephemera: Includes the original 'Your Vacation Guide' newspaper supplement from the 'Coral Tribune' featuring a map of Key West and a reproduction of an original watercolor by Klir Beck. Imprint: Official Publication of the Key West Chamber of Commerce c. 1957. Specs: Booklet: 5.5 x 8.5 inches; 52 pages. Newspaper: 10.75 x 15.75 inches. CONDITION: Overall Grade: Very Good. The Booklet: The bindings are tight and square. The wraps show moderate shelf handling wear and a small fold at the top front corner. Internal: The text block is clean and free of markings. There is light even age-toning throughout with a more pronounced area of toning on the inside front wrap where the newspaper supplement was long laid-in. The Supplement: The newspaper shows standard fold lines and age-toning but remains intact and serves as a significant contextual offset to the booklet. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- Key West in 1957 was a city in transition. While the guide celebrates the 'Old Island' charm and 100-year-old mahogany buildings the frequent mentions of the Naval Annex and the growing shrimp industry point to an island increasingly integrated into the national economy. The presence of the Coral Tribune supplement dated 1956/57 in the text is vital. Most ephemeral guides were separated from their newspaper inserts within days of arrival; finding the two items still together provides a 'composite artifact' that allows for a much more granular study of local advertising and civic branding than a standalone booklet. SCHOLARLY FEATURES Social History: Documents a specific mid-century cultural nexus where Key West served as the primary gateway to Havana Cuba evidenced by advertisements for the 'S/S City of Havana' ferry and 'Simone's Tours'. Graphic Design: The booklet utilizes 'Scraperboard' and 'Linocut' aesthetic styles typical of mid-century coastal tourism branding emphasizing a 'tropical-industrial' vibe e.g. the power plant and shrimp fleet illustrations. Urban Development: The directory and text provide a census-level look at businesses before the 1960s development boom recording now-lost shops and 'unnecessary noises prohibited' inns like the Bottlecap Inn. rif. 21544Very Good- Plus. A remarkably scarce survivor from the 'Florida Land Boom' of the 1920s. Printed by the prestigious Record Company in St. Augustine this promotional piece was designed with a dual-purpose strategy: while the front panels lure the tourist with the world-famous beach and surf the inner panels pivot sharply toward permanent settlement homeownership and commercial investment. Unlike later post-war brochures that focused almost exclusively on family vacations this "Land Boom" artifact treats Daytona as a viable year-round "Metropolis of the Florida East Coast" making it a vital primary source for Florida urban development history. KEY FEATURES: Description: St. Augustine FL: Record Company Printers n.d. circa 1925-1928. First Edition. Folding Brochure. Octavo-sized 8-panel brochure 16 total sections; 3 x 6 inches folded opening to a panoramic 6 x 24.5 inches. Color illustrated wraps. The Print History: Published by The Record Company St. Augustine a firm celebrated in the 1920s for its high-quality county histories and regional promotional literature. The 'Hard Sell': Beyond tourism the text explicitly promotes Daytona for 'Business and Professional Men' citing agricultural opportunities retail growth and the city's status as a hub for 'Home-Builders.' Visuals: Features high-quality rotogravure-style monochrome and tinted photography showing the iconic driving beach early resort architecture and civic infrastructure. Scarcity: No single copies located in OCLC WorldCat or major institutional databases at the time of cataloging. A rare ephemeral survivor of the Florida pre-Depression boom. Specs: 16 distinct sections total front and back of 8 panels. CONDITION: Very Good. A superior copy of a fragile ephemeral item. Carefully handled with no tears splits or separations at the folds. Modest even age-toning to the paper stock as expected; color on the cover panels remains vibrant and crisp. Faint tide-mark on panel 2-3. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE The 1920s in Florida were a fever dream of development and Daytona was at the center of the storm. This brochure captures the moment before the 1926 hurricane and the 1929 crash a time when the 'Daytona Beach' brand was being solidified. It represents the transition of Florida from a frontier to a curated tropical paradise designed for the Northern middle class. The emphasis on home-buying rather than just hotel stays is the "smoking gun" of the Land Boom era. It reflects the efforts of the Daytona Beach Chamber of Commerce to stabilize the local economy by attracting permanent capital rather than just seasonal visitors. rif. 21545Very Good. A visually striking and architecturally significant promotional booklet designed to position DeLand as the intellectual and cultural capital of the Florida Land Boom. Featuring high-concept graphic layouts and a dual-front cover design tête-bêche style this 28-page work emphasizes the city's unique identity as 'The Athens of Florida' through its educational institutions and citrus wealth. Binding: Original stapled pictorial wraps; 8 x 9.25 inches. Features a unique 'Dual-Front' graphic orientation where both the front and rear wraps serve as primary thematic covers. Imprint: Attributed to the Record Company of St. Augustine based on typography and OCLC records. Rarity: Scarce; OCLC locates only three institutional copies all held within Florida libraries FSU UF and the University of Miami. CONDITION Very Good -- A crisp carefully handled copy. Features a gentle vertical fold to the center likely from original mailing. A faint previous owner's name is visible on the 'fishing scene' cover but does not obscure the artwork. Internally clean with staples firm and no rust migration. Specs: 8 x 9.25 inches / 28 pages plus wraps.St. Augustine: Record Co. n.d. c. 1925-1927. First Edition. Stapled Wraps. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- During the mid-1920s while coastal Florida cities sold surf and sand DeLand marketed itself as a refined inland 'Athens'. This prospectus is a prime example of the high-budget promotional material produced by the Record Company which utilized avant-garde graphic design to distinguish DeLand from the more rowdy 'boom towns' of the era. The booklet captures the city during its golden age of citrus and academic expansion at John B. Stetson University. Its dual-cover design-one side focusing on the sporting life fishing and the other on civic/educational status-reflects the sophisticated marketing tactics used to attract the 'educated' class of Northern investors and settlers. rif. 21657Very Good. Unrecorded Early Depression-Era Civic Profile A scarce and sophisticated early Depression-era civic profile presenting Winter Park as a refined residential and 'winter resort' community. Eschewing the typical high-octane Florida 'land boom' style this booklet promotes a vision of civic stability and New England-inspired charm. It highlights the city's architectural and social infrastructure from 'A City of Beautiful Homes' and its iconic winter hotels-The Seminole The Alabama and The Virginia Inn-to the modern amenities of artesian wells and lake breezes. The narrative balances Rollins College and the local school system with a robust sporting life including archery rowing on Lake Maitland and the local baseball club's recent pennant victories. It serves as a primary visual record of a 'strictly modern city' maintaining its cultural cultivation at the onset of the 1930s. KEY FEATURES Rarity: No institutional holdings located in OCLC/WorldCat at the time of cataloging; a potentially unrecorded survival of Central Florida boosterism. Civic Architecture: Extensive imagery and text regarding major winter hotels and Spanish-style apartment residences such as El Cortez and The Lincoln. Lifestyle & Recreation: Documents a broad spectrum of 1930s leisure including shuffleboard public playgrounds and outdoor February entertainment. Historical Data: Utilizes the 1930 Federal Census population as 'recent' data; confirms the 1931-1932 printing window. Sports Note: Briefly mentions the Winter Park Baseball Club as Lake-Orange League pennant winners 1929 and state semi-pro champions 1929-1930. Specs: n.p. c. 1931-1932. First Edition. Octavo. Stapled Pictorial Wraps; 7½ x 9¼ inches; 24 pages. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographs several full-page. CONDITION: Very Good. The bindings are tight and square. The pictorial wraps show moderate shelf handling wear consistent with an ephemeral publication of this age. Internally clean with light even age-toning. A solid and uncommon example of Central Florida promotional literature. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- This booklet documents Winter Park's unique identity as the 'New England of the South' during a pivotal economic transition. By focusing on civic permanence and climate advantages rather than speculative growth it reflects the marketing strategy of Central Florida at the start of the Depression. The inclusion of the 'Big Three' hotels and the town's athletic achievements provides a comprehensive snapshot of a community that viewed itself as climatically and culturally superior to the more transient coastal resorts.
