An act restoring Ireland's ability to export goods directly to the colonies in the Americas and Africa issued in the context of the American Revolutionary War and amending what became known as the Navigation Acts. Restricting the freedoms of Britain's colonies with regard to the import and export of goods the Navigation Acts had been a significant factor in fermenting rebellious discontent in America - requiring all of a colony's imports to be either bought from Britain or resold by British merchants in Britain regardless of the price obtainable elsewhere. The acts were also resented in Ireland and damaged its economy as they permitted the importation of English goods into Ireland tariff-free and simultaneously imposed tariffs on Irish exports travelling in the opposite direction. The present act removing some of these barriers demonstrates the changing nature of British mercantilism as the American Revolution progressed. 1787réf. 162443London: Printed by Charles Eyre and Andrew Strahan 1787 i.e. 1788. Among the earliest Parliamentary responses to the British slave trade First edition of the first British law to regulate slave shipping preserved in its original volume of yearly parliamentary acts. The law bound 54th in this volume pioneered techniques of popular abolitionist appeal. The Slave Trade Act 1788 limited the number of enslaved persons that could be transported on British ships. It also required that all ships carried a doctor to monitor the conditions of the enslaved persons. The Act was supported through Parliament by Sir William Dolben 1727-1814 and Charles Stanhope 1753-1816. LoGerfo notes of their campaign that "the machinery used to appeal to the literate public would also be used in the future" p. 450. This volume collects 57 acts passed by the 16th Parliament of Great Britain which met from November 1787 to July 1788 and was led by Pitt the Younger. Like all Parliamentary statutes of this period the Slave Trade Act was separately printed with a general title page for inclusion in the yearly volumes of acts. Most of these statutes were printed with their own title pages included in the signatures and pagination - here all such pages have been removed. These laws were printed in limited numbers usually estimated at around 1100 copies only. The volume includes laws against chimney sweeps and child labour and measures to compensate dispossessed American loyalists in the years after the Revolution. Folio 304 x 191 mm pp. 1012 = 900 title pages of individual acts removed. Woodcut device to title page woodcut head- tailpieces and initials to contents. Contemporary quarter sheep spine lettered and with black morocco label in gilt marbled paper sides. Bumping and wear minor loss to spine ends joints cracked but holding firm slight browning and foxing to endpapers and contents slight marking to edges: a good copy. réf. 146921The collection comprises: 1 A ring-bound folder containing nearly 100 designs for cap and blazer badges including 40 with mounted examples of the finished embroidered patches. The designs are full-scale pencil drawings some coloured and most with typed or manuscript details of the colours designs and materials e.g. 'Royal Blue Cap. Badge worked all gold'. Badges for schools predominate with some of the wealthier private schools calling for multiple designs. For instance St Peters College has different designs for: Colours Junior Second First and First for prefects tennis cap regular and for prefects house and school prefects rowing cap regular and for prefects and old scholars. Also well represented are sporting clubs mainly baseball and cricket including the South Australian Cricket Association as well as a small number of youth clubs fraternities and other societies. The mount leaves are pulled at the punched holes and a little stained and torn; one leaf is defective; overall an impressive and extraordinary collection. 2 Approximately 300 hand-cut stencils paper or card used to transfer designs to the fabric where they would then be worked over by skilled embroiderers using free-motion or 'Irish' embroidery machines. The stencils include many designs not in the sample book including company logos and many other school and association badges. Of particular note are several relating to the Australian military forces in the Second World War including two for a Royal Australian Air Force pilot's wings one pricked for pouncing one a cut stencil one for what appears to be a torpedoman's shoulder patch and one for the Red Cross Transport Service. Some are dated with the earliest noted being for the West Torrens Cricket Club South Australian Cricket Association premiers 1932-33; the latest date noted is 1940. Companies represented include General Motors-Holden GM-H Amscol Mastakraft itself Howells Electric Motors Amalgamated Airways and the Simson's Electric Light Company Cricket Club. 1966Book is in excellent condition with a little wear to lower corners and a tiny bit of lower edge wear. Binding is in green cloth with black print. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no other blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows small tears, edge wear, sunning. Map endpapers, 224 pages, glossy paper section with b&w photos. Contents include: Celts and Christians, Fire, Pyre, Flood and Frost, Pollution and Bogglesloshing, Hellfire and regatta, The Hymen of London, etc. From the flyleaf: "The eye with which (the author) views the river is sharp and unsentimental; the style in which he reports what he sees is astringent and objective. He is entertainingly informative on such unpromising aspects as geology and pollution; his historical vignettes are exciting and colourful; and the people he meets during his journey are observed and reported without any concessions to conventional 'character sketching'. The mecilessly limned Australian bores aboard the river steamer, the indomitable mrs. Rockett with her devotion to the river that robbed her of her husband, and many others, spring sharply from the pages for the reader's enjoyment. This is a book that is refreshingly different from those that offer travelogue information, idyllic scenic descriptions, or personal prejudcies. it is in every sense revealing about the Thames; and it is also revealing about the personality of the author. There is an 'I' as well as a very keen Eye, on the river."
