rif. 2547722 September 1919. On ornate letterhead of The National Union of Railwaymen Unity House Euston Road London N.W.1. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. 1p 4to. In good condition on lightly aged and creased cartridge paper. Folded three times. The letterhead is quite an impressive affair with an engraving of ‘Unity House’ and lettering in a variety of styles. The letter is addressed to ‘W. D. Ross Esq. / Oriel College / Oxford.’ The ink on the ribbon appears to have been running out as the latter part of the note is faded. It reads: ‘Dear Sir / I have received your letter of the 18th instant and fully appreciate your object in writing me but unfortunately I am so full up with engagements at present I cannot possibly give you a date. / Yours faithfully / J. H. Thomas / General Secretary.’ The nine-day rail strike beginning at midnight on 26/27 September would end in victory by the union over the government. See Image. 22 September 1919. On ornate letterhead of The National Union of Railwaymen, Unity House, Euston Road, London, N.W.1. unknown

2008Fine English Original binding. In special slip-case. In English and Turkish. Color and b/w ills. 4to. (31 x 24 cm). 336 p. Istanbul, enjoying all the advantages of its position as a bridge between two continents and seas and the cultural heritage accumulated in its long history, remained for over a thousand years one of the most important centers of the world trade. It has always preserved its character as a city joining East and West, and the Istanbul merchant has continued this historical tradition over the centuries, bravely shouldering the responsibilities placed upon him by his function as a bridge between different civilizations while at the same time exploiting all the possibilities offered by the situation. We dedicate this book to a city that has always preserved its own extraordinary beauty and to the merchants and businessmen to whom Istanbul owes its very existence.
