réf. PJH56127Albin Michel 2007. Ownership Signature of Roger Cardinal Near Fine in publishers decorated wrappers. 1st edition. Illustrated throughout in colour. Roger Cardinal was one of Britains most distinguished art historians best known for defining what is generally known as Outsider Art - that is art by people with no formal training. He began his career as a lecturer at the French department of the University of Manitoba Canada subsequently moving to Warwick University and finally to the University of Kent at Canterbury where he taught for fifty years and held a professorship. Roger Cardinal was not only a leading authority on Outsider Art but also on Surrealism. He was a prolific writer and a master of literary style. His eloquent percipient writings include several books on a wide range of subjects such as Outsider Art 1972 German Romantics in Context 1975 Figures of Reality 1981 Expressionism 1984 The Landscape Vision of Paul Nash 1989 The Cultures of Collecting 1994 and Kurt Schwitters 2011. He also acted as a curator and was a regular contributor to art-historical publications. CardinalÕs interest in art lay in its margins - the neurodiverse psychotic uneducated autistic self-taught and ÔotherÕ. His fascination with artists such as the violently psychotic Adolf Wlfli lay in their creativity rather than in the sensationalism of their lives. Certainly it did not lie in the resale value of their work. That outsider art should have its own multimillion-dollar annual fair in New York and specialist departments at ChristieÕs auctioneers ran quite contrary to CardinalÕs thinking. 1824réf. FGN21-E-1Paris: De L'Imprimerie de Firmin Didot 1824. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 8.5" by 5". Not Stated. A rare fascinating collection of works exploring the history of the later Roman Empire. A rare fascinating collection of works exploring the history of the later Roman Empire. New edition written in French. The decline of the Roman Empire refers to the gradual societal collapse of the Western Roman Empire. Many theories of causality prevail but most concern the disintegration of political economic military and other social institutions in tandem with foreign invasions and usurpers from within the empire. Volume I focuses on Constantine the Great Constantine I or Saint Constantine who was Roman Emperor from 306 to 337. Well known for being the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity Constantine and co-Emperor Licinius issued the Edict of Milan in 313 which proclaimed religious tolerance of all religions throughout the empire. The foremost general of his time Constantine defeated the emperors Maxentius and Licinius during civil wars. He also fought successfully against the Franks Alamanni Visigoths and Sarmatians during his reigneven resettling parts of Dacia which had been abandoned during the previous century. Constantine built a new imperial residence in place of Byzantium naming it New Rome. However in Constantine's honour people called it Constantinople which would later be the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire for over one thousand years. Because of this he is thought of as the founder of the Eastern Roman Empire. Originally compiled by French historical writer Charles Le Beau the work was a continuation of Charles Rollin's Histoire Romaine and JBL Crevier's Histoire des empereurs. This later new edition is produced by M. De Saint-Martin a belletrist valued for his aesthetic qualities and originality of style and tone. This influencial work is considered to be faithful to Byzantine historians and the way in which it describes Constantine I refounding it as an imperial residence in 330 AD. With R. M. Beverley's armorial bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume author of "The Darwinian Theory of the Transmutation of Species". Complete in twenty-one volumes. 2000réf. 7393NYU Press 2000. Hardcover. New/NO DUST COVER. Religion in America to 1865 provides the only available survey of religion in the United States from colonization to the Civil War. Its guiding theme is American pluralism. In America the number and diversity of religious bodies increased to levels unprecedented in the world's older nations as did the percentage of Americans who chose to belong to them. Meanwhile churches with roots in Europe were forced to adapt to their new environment becoming markedly different from their ancestral faiths. Religion in America to 1865 provides a concise introduction to the central themes of American religious history before the Civil War covering Native American religions Colonial American religions Protestantism Anglicanism and African American religions. The book is structured chronologically allowing connections between religious and secular history. Review "Essential reading because of its breadth and the significance of its themes." -- Joyce D. One may wonder what O'Hair would think of these changes but Le Beau leaves no doubt that she would have something to say." ― The Atheist About the Author Bryan F. Le Beau is Professor of History and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Missouri Kansas City. First Edition. "A pleasant gossiping book evidencing considerable acquaintance with the subjects described. It contains a description of the manners and customs of the Iroquois the Hurons the Algonquins and other Indian tribes derived from the author's personal experiences although the style in which the work is written is rather that of a romance than a true narrative." Sabin Little is known of the adventurer LeBeau transported to New France in 1729 from a French prison where he was confined for libertinism. In 1730 he fled from Quebec to Holland to escape the hangman having been charged with counterfeiting. There are elements of fiction in LeBeau's work as well as considerable borrowing from previous sources such as Lafitau. The best chapters are those discussing the habits of the beaver and the religious ideas and customs of the Indians. Bell L126. Gagnon I 1992. Howes L-167. JCB I 582 5 plates. O'Dea 134. Sabin 39582.
