1924Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original Ottoman illustrated journal. 40x27 cm. In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 8 p., richly ills. Taken from a volume. Foxing on pages, slightly chipped on hinges. Overall a very good copy. Extremely rare early issue of an Ottoman illustrated journal depicting a lynching of colored American citizens in Florida by white Americans, published one year after the proclamation of the Republic in Turkey. The first studies bearing social criticism on issues like slavery and abolition were made in the early years of the young Turkish Republic, which had refused the legacy of its imperial predecessor. In this period, several classics of American anti-slavery literature and contemporary works were translated for the first time, and texts on slavery and abolition in America were translated and published in Turkey. The term "Lynch's Law" apparently originated during the American Revolution when Patriot Charles Lynch (1736-1796), a Virginia justice of the peace, ordered extralegal punishment of the Loyalists. Variations of the term, such as "lynch law," "judge lynch," and "lynching", were standard entries in American and British English dictionaries by the 1850s. In 1811, a man named Captain William Lynch claimed that the phrase, already famous, actually came from a 1780 compact signed between him and his neighbors in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to uphold their own brand of law independent of legal authority. In the pre-Civil War South, members of the abolitionist movement and other people opposing slavery were sometimes targets of lynch mob violence. (Source: Wikipedia).

1955Fine Turkish Original wrappers. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English and Turkish. [6], 711, [Lix] p., plates. Slight stains on spine. A fine copy. First and only Turkish edition with bilingual title and foreword with English (pp. I-XVI), of this rare book published after the first description of the Black Sea fishes has been performed by Pallas in 1811, containing the most complete information about the species composition of fishes in the Black Sea is given by Slastenenko (1955-1956), who listed 237 species, with characteristic features species, its distribution, biology, ecology, taxonomy, commercial and nutritional significance, conservation status with attractive plates. "This is the book of knowledge acquired through research carried on since three-quarters of a century in the neighboring countries bordering the Black Sea." (From the Preface by Ekrem Barlas). "This manuscript gives for the first time, a general summary of the marine and freshwater fishes in the Black Sea Basin. In the last century, a series of documents on the fauna of the Aral-Pontic, Caspian Basin has been published by K. Kessler and other authors. But, Since then, several investigations on the fauna of fishes of the Black Sea Basin made by individuals and expeditions revealed the existence of entirely different conditions. Therefore some deceased species have been described. Furthermore, as a result of the migration of the Mediterranean fauna into the Black Sea, the lists have become richer with the addition of many species which were unknown earlier. This book consists of two sections: 1. Special section which deals with the study of the composition of the fish fauna, and its systematic and biological characteristics. 2. The section consists of a summary of the historical study of the Black Sea fauna, its genesis, and a short hydrological and geological history of the sea. In the special section, 237 species and subspecies have been described. These belong to 20 groups, 56 families, and 122 genera. This section also includes the emigrants of the Mediterranean, remnants of Pontic fossils, and freshwater forms." (From the Slastenenko's foreword). Fishbase of Germany 90290.; Fifteen copies in OCLC 164798323.
2016New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 264 p., color ills. Byzantium's other empire: Trebizond. Edited by Antony Eastmond. Trebizond, that "long-anticipated city of the Komnenians with its soft and melodious name" to quote Jakob Fallmerayer, has long lured scholars, attracted by its unique combination of Byzantine familiarity and Anatolian foreignness. From 1204 to 1461 the city was at the heart of an empire that proudly proclaimed its inheritance of Byzantine power, but simultaneously stood apart from it; a "Greek Emirate" surrounded by Turkish and Caucasian states. Focusing on the church of Hagia Sophia in Trebizond, with its unusual architecture, unique sculptural decoration and extraordinary wall paintings, Byzantium's Other Empire: Trebizond reveals the ways in which these tensions were expressed in public in the monuments of the empire. It draws extensively on the photograph and drawing archives of David and June Winfield, held in the Conway Library at the Courtauld Institute of Art. The Winfields restored the church from 1959-1963, in a project masterminded by David Talbot Rice. Here, Talbot Rice's photographs from 1929, as well as those of other early scholars who visited Trabzon, notably Gabriel Millet in 1893 and Fyodor Uspenskii in 1916-1917 are presented. These scholars recorded the city, its palaces, churches and monasteries. They provide glimpses of a lost empire and of the city of Trebizond which has been transformed in the decades since their visits. This volume also includes the first published translation into English of the fourteenth-century chronicle of Michael Panaretos.

2016New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 150 p. Tobacco smuggling in the Black Sea region of the Ottoman Empire, 1883-1914. With the founding of the Régie in 1883, Ottoman tobacco producers were suddenly faced with a new company that took control over their mainstay crop. Tobacco producers and merchants who had problems with this new system came up with a variety of responses. One of these responses was the hiding and smuggling of the crop, and the number of tobacco smugglers rapidly increased. Many people from different sectors of the economy collaborated with the smugglers in order to make more money. The Ottoman government, worked to resolve the problems between the company and those working in the tobacco sector, but it failed to find a solution that would be satisfactory to all or that qualitatively would change the situation. It was the result of the different definition of ¿who is a smuggler' question by the government and the Régie. In the face of such vastly differing parameter, the Ottoman government could not reach a compromise with the Régie. Nor did the government create a new, alternative administration to the Régie because of the agreements between the Ottoman Public Debt Administration and the state. Within this context, this study examines the role of the ordinary people and the role of the organized movement against the monopolization of a crop. It is an attempt to show how the crowds in tobacco sector reacted to the changes in your daily lives.
