1980ref. 103871Paris: Editions des musées nationaux 1980. Paperback. Very good to near fine-. 379 pages: illustrations; 16 cm. In French. Charles Nègre 1820–1880 was a pioneering French photographer from Grasse studied painting under Delaroche Ingres and Drolling before opening his own studio. Encouraged by Delaroche to use photography as a tool for artistic research Nègre began with daguerreotypes and later adopted calotypes. His 1851 albumen print Chimney-Sweeps Walking likely staged is notable for its early attempt to capture and freeze motion. Though excluded from the state-sponsored Missions Héliographiques he independently undertook an extensive photographic survey of the Midi including a 1852 image of Grasse architecture that foreshadowed art photography. In 1859 Empress Eugénie commissioned him to document the Imperial Asylum in the Bois de Vincennes. Nègre also a skilled printer developed his own gravure method and used both albumen and salt prints. A proposed project under Napoleon III to photograph sculpture was never realized. He retired to Nice in 1861 producing portraits and landscapes for tourists and died in Grasse in 1880.
