Else light shelfwear.; Religions in the Graeco-Roman World; 473 pages; The Early Amazons offers a new understanding of the ancient Amazon myth situating mythical representations in the realm of cultural history. The first section examines how the Amazons have presented a challenge to views on history myth and gender in classical mythology from the late eighteenth century up to the impact of structuralism. Topics included are nineteenth-century historiography and the interest in linguistics. The second section sheds new light on the culture of archaic Greece offering a coherent assessment of literary and visual representations. Taking mythical narrative as a form of oral storytelling it shows the emergence of the Amazon motif and its meaning in the world of epic. Iconographical analysis reveals how the visual arts have made a contribution of their own to the imaginary presence of the Amazons. . 1995. 9004100776 . E. J. Brill hardcover

The author uses a modified version of the schema proposed by the French theorist Dumezil to consider the profound connections between such works as the "Iliad" the "Odyssey" the Indian epics - the "Ramayana" and the "Mahabharata" - the Iranian "Book of Kings" and the Scandinavian "Yaglingasaga". The book includes a long critical exposition of the discipline of comparative mythology from its 18th-century origins to the revival of the discipline by Dumezil and his followers from 1938 to the present. It also reassesses the profound critique of Dumezil which linked him with Nazi ideology.; 256 pages . 1994. 1850438315 . I. B. Tauris hardcover

Among the stories surrounding the legendary foundation of the city of Rome by the twins Romulus and Remus previous scholarly attention has focused primarily on one scene – the depiction of the she-wolf nursing the twins following their miraculous salvation from the floodwaters of the Tiber. This book examines another event in the cycle the conception of the twins in which the Vestal Virgin Rhea Silvia is visited in her sleep and raped by the god Mars. Some fifty-one examples of the encounter of Mars and Rhea Silvia are analyzed drawn from coins relief sculpture gems wall painting mosaics and pottery covering a time frame from the motif’s origin in the early 1st century B. C. To its disappearance in the late 4th century A. D. An analysis of the scene's iconographical evolution and its documented periods of popularity both in the public and private sphere are associated with contemporary trends in Roman literature religion and art. This monograph on the representation of Mars and Rhea Silvia is not simply a self-contained study of a single motif over a specific time frame. Within the realm of Roman art the book discusses larger issues concerning the relationship between art myth and religion and political propaganda drawing from methodologies of appropriation Kopienkritik word and image semiotics and memory culture. As such the book constitutes a case study whose conclusions may serve as guidelines for the study of Roman art in general.; Collection Latomus Volume 336; 241 pages . 2012. 2870312776 . The long introduction begins with a catalogue of manuscripts; and this leads to an investigation into the manuscript tradition and the history of the poem's transmission. Dr Hall then surveys the most important printed editions of the poem. He examines various theories of dating and discusses the sources of the story. He concludes the introduction with a brief critical assessment of the form and style of the poem. Dr Hall establishes his text after an examination of all the extant manuscripts. The apparatus though very full is selective in that it records readings of younger manuscripts only when they offer something new. It also ignores trifling corruptions. The commentary is similarly selective. In general it discusses everything relevant to the establishing of the text and ignores points of purely mythological and literary interest. . 1969. 0521074428 . Cambridge University Press hardcover

Dust-soiling to one small area of textblock.; This book analyses the mythical and legendary narratives in Ovid's Fasti as narrative and concentrates on the neglected literary aspects of these stories. It combines traditional tools of literary criticism with more modern techniques taken especially from narratology and intertextuality. From a narratological viewpoint it covers important features such as aperture closure characterization internal narrators description space time and cinematic technique. On the intertextual level it examines the narratives' complex relationship with Virgil Livy and Ovid's own earlier works. Recent criticism on the Fasti has addressed various elements religious historical political astronomical etc. but detailed narrative study has been wanting. Small chip to one corner of DJ. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Writing in pencil to front DJ flap.; 236 pages; In antiquity a considerable number of books of prophecies went under the general title of "Sibylline Oracles". Rulers as significant as Augustus consulted them in time of danger or crisis for advice and prognoses. Increasing numbers of "ex post facto" prophecies laying a particular interpretation on facts of recent history came to be attributed to one of the mysterious Sibyls. Perhaps the most famous of these is the Cumaean Sibyl who guides the hero in the sixth book of Vergil's "Aeneid" . In fact she was somewhat unusual in her similiarity to other oracular prophetesses such as the Pythia. For where the latter prophesied in response to particular inquirers one of the distinguishing characteristics of Sibyls was that they composed discursive verses for distribution to the world at large. This Professor Parke's last book which was virtually complete on his death in 1986 is an account of a subject both rarely treated in recent decades and difficult to access for all but the most expert. In its pursuit of the sometimes elusive Sibyls it ranges from Heraclitus to Eusebius from Archaic Asia Minor to Christian Rome. This book should be of interest to undergraduates postgraduates and academics of classics. . 1988. 0415003431 . Routledge hardcover

The present book sets out to study the development and interpretation of a substantial group of Greek legends associated with one well-known figure who was said to have originated in the East. . 1979. 9025607969 .
