"A differenza di quanto generalmente si creda, gli uomini del Medioevo sapevano osservare assai bene la fauna e la flora, ma non pensavano affatto che ciò avesse un rapporto con il sapere, né che potesse condurre alla verità. Quest'ultima non rientra nel campo della fisica, ma della metafisica: il reale è una cosa, il vero un'altra, diversa. Allo stesso modo, artisti e illustratori sarebbero stati perfettamente in grado di raffigurare gli animali in maniera realistica, eppure iniziarono a farlo solo al termine del Medioevo. Dal loro punto di vista, infatti, le rappresentazioni convenzionali - quelle che si vedono nei bestiari miniati - erano più importanti e veritiere di quelle naturalistiche. Per la cultura medievale, preciso non significa vero. Del resto, cos'è una rappresentazione realistica se non una forma di rappresentazione convenzionale come tante altre? Non è radicalmente diversa né costituisce un progresso. Se non si cogliesse questo aspetto, non si capirebbe niente né dell'arte medievale né della storia delle immagini. Nell'immagine tutto è convenzione, compreso il 'realismo'".

Ogni animale rimanda a uno o più simboli, che l'autore ci svela tramite dei dialoghi tanto piacevoli sul piano narrativo quanto profondi dal punto di vista psicologico.

Le categorie umane e animali che abitano Napoli e la percorrono, nel tempo e nello spazio, prendono forma in una girandola di tipologie, dove i riti antichissimi di una città eterna - il coro dei santi con cui si dialoga come fossero parenti, i sangui che si sciolgono e le capuzzelle dei morti venerate come divinità protettrici - accompagnano il lettore dentro e oltre i tanti luoghi comuni della napoletanità e di quell'umanità speciale che da sempre la abita.
