Il paziente lavoro intrapreso da Anna Maria Siena nella ricomposizione dei tanti frammenti che, insieme, delineano in maniera inaspettata e assai originale l'itinerario artistico di E. A. Mario, ha il valore di un doveroso risarcimento nei confronti di uno scrittore il cui peso, nell'ambito della poesia e della cultura di questo secolo, sebbene chiaro ai contemporanei, pare ormai, a trent'anni e più dalla sua morte, essere stato come rimosso, o al più rubricato nel meno impegnativo archivio degli autori di canzoni, sotto l'insegna patriottica della Leggenda del Piave e sotto quella - patriottica no, ma certo non meno fatidica - di Santa Lucia luntana. Non si vuol certo sminuire l'importanza della Scrittura applicata all'universo della canzone. Per la Napoli novecentesca, anzi, è proprio questo uno dei capitoli letterari di maggior prestigio. Pure, non sembra che l'idea corrente della produzione letteraria di E. A. Mario sia neppur lontanamente adeguata alla complessità, alle molte sfaccettature della sua opera d'artista Questo libro contribuisce a migliorare il quadro, e dà ampiamente conto di un'avventura intellettuale mobile e variata.
