A judicious and finely argued study of Joan of Arc in which the author weighs her mystical visions and martial achievements against the competing interpretations of rationalist scepticism and traditional Catholic hagiography. Drawing upon the original trial proceedings contemporary eyewitness accounts of the relief of Orléans 1429 and the later rehabilitation documents of 1456 the work challenges theories of hysteria epilepsy and political manipulation. Particular emphasis is placed upon Joan's prophetic accuracy notably the crowning of Charles VII; her remarkable leadership in the field despite illiteracy and the theological acumen displayed during her trial at Rouen all adduced as evidence of a character transcending a naturalist explanation. 88 pages. 23cm x 14cm. 88 pages. 23 cm x 14 cm.
