92468Paris Badouin An 9 1801. . Second edition; 4to; 3 engraved plates; contemporary half calf neatly rebacked very good condition; 142 pp. Second edition enlarged of this significant work by the inventor of descriptive geometry originally published as a series of lectures in 1795. Descriptive geometry is the science of presenting a three dimensional object on a two dimensional plane. Monge's methods which allowed for accurate representation of objects including shadows and vanishing points were so revolutionary at the time that they were made military secrets. Using his formulae one could send accurate representations of objects to allies information on fortifications was particularly useful as the Napoleonic wars were ongoing. Monge later led the production of the Description de l'Égypte and the accuracy of many of the depictions is testimony to his methods. Current applications of his breakthrough are numerous and include 3D films and architectural modelling. Paris, Badouin, An 9 [1801]. unknown

Originally published in 1798 the work was formative and even "created" descriptive geometry and opened up a new and promising era for technical engineering. Descriptive geometry lays at the roots of all technical drawing and graphical methods that help to make mechanical engineering possible. An extensive new preface by the present editor Barnabé Brisson 1777-1828 inspector of the "Ponts et Chaussées" explains about the role of the École Normale founded October 30 1794 which was to renew public education and allow France to develop its own industries. Also included are a list of the first professors and a biographical note on Gaspard Monge first professor of descriptive geometry. Shrigley finds humor in flat depictions of the inconsequential and the bizarre qualities that he heightens through a deliberately limited technique. In this unusually complete look at the much-loved artist's diverse approaches Shrigley is revealed as a master of many media and many kinds of humor from the black humor for which he is famed to caricature and more slapstick situations. With an immediate and accessible appeal to diverse audiences Shrigley's work offers an insightful commentary on the absurdities of human relationships. Published on the occasion of the artist's first major survey show at London's Hayward Gallery this beautifully produced volume includes a 7" vinyl picture-disc featuring an exclusive recording by the artist. David Shrigley was born in Macclesfield England in 1968 and studied Environmental Art at the Glasgow School of Art from 1988-1991. As well as authoring numerous books he directed the video for Blur's "Good Song" and for Bonnie "Prince" Billy's "Agnes Queen of Sorrow."
