An limited edition inscribed copy of this poetry anthology by Monk Gibbon with an unpublished poem written by the author on the first free-endpaper. This is a particularly special copy of 'The Branch of Hawthorn Tree' by renowned Irish poet and author Monk Gibbon. It is part of limited edition printing of 460 copies of which this is copy number 352. On the front pastedown is a previous owner's bookplate and reads: 'Michael and Irene Franklin 9 Lower Mall W.6.'. It is thought that Michael Franklin was known to the author because the author has written an intimate and heartfelt inscription on the front free-endpaper: 'Michael Franklin Most restless or mortals nextto indecipherable.' It is dated September 1927. Twenty years later in January 1947 the author wrote another inscription including a handwritten unpublished poem. It is indeed a very special copy of this book. This copy also includes the publisher's advert on an unattached piece of parchment. 'The Branch of Hawthorn Tree' is a collection of poetry by Monk Gibbon mostly consisting of lyrical prose poems. The book includes many coloured illustrations by French painter Picart Le Doux. The book was printed from Deberny Type on Arches paper. With the original glassine dustwrapper. In the publisher's original paper wraps. With the scarce glassine wrap intact. Externally smart with just a few handling marks to the front and rear wraps. He also considered the equation of vibrating strings a topic he later investigated more fully. In the second memoir Monge returned to infinitesimal geometry. Working on the theory of developable surfaces outlined by Euler in 1772 he applied it to the problem of shadows and penumbrae and treated several problems concerning ruled surfaces. Pointing out the manifest absurdities contradictions and falsehoods of the Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk 1836 including sworn documentary evidence and a biographical sketch of Maria Monk. Maria Monks narrative is one of the most famous examples of nineteenth century American anti-Catholic propaganda. The mysterious Maria Monk found ready help and encouragement in the publication of her charges by men associated with the American nativist movement the Rev. George Bourne and the Rev. W.C.Brownlee. Within a few years of the appearance of her slanderous and scandalous disclosures of the wicked activities engaged in at the Hotel Dieu nunnery in Montreal from where she claimed to have just escaped Maria Monk had slipped back into obscurity. She died on Welfare Island where she was imprisoned on charges of petty thievery and immorality. For an interesting account of the Maria Monk controversy see Ralph Thompsons article The Maria Monk Affair in The Colophon Part Seventeen. TPL 7395. Lande 1992. Gagnon II 86.
