1994réf. AH-GPWK-I4HH1994 Ulster Historical Foundation paperback edition. Some reading wear else good condition. From the cover: Northern Nationalism is the first major study of the political fortunes of the nationalist minority in the north of Ireland during the critical formative period 1890–1940. This witnessed the unfolding dramas of the Home Rule crisis the Irish Revolution Partition and the establishment of a separate political state in the six counties of Northern Ireland. It thus addresses what has long been a glaring gap in modern Irish historical research. This book draws on a vast range of hitherto unavailable original sources. It traces the process whereby the hopes of northern Catholics for all-Ireland self-government as championed by the Home Rule Party of Redmond and Devlin were dashed by the emergence of Partition in the decade after 1914. Dr Phoenix highlights the trauma of the Partition settlement of 1920-21 for the northern minority who as a result found themselves marooned in a Unionist-dominated state. The divisions within northern nationalism Sinn Fein's policy towards the northern Catholics the career of Joseph Devlin and the role of the Roman Catholic Church are all clearly described. The far-reaching impact of the bitter sectarian violence of the early 1920s on the northern Catholic mind is critically examined. The author continues to break new ground assessing the reactions of the diverse strands of northern nationalism – Home Rulers Sinn Feiners and the IRA – to the harsh realities of minority powerlessness in the new state.New light is shed on the attempts of the fledgling Irish governments of Collins and Cosgrave and later de Valera to alleviate the plight of their Ulster supporters. The Craig-Collins Pacts of 1922 are discussed as are the effects of the Irish Civil War on northern nationalism. The history of the ill-fated Irish Boundary Commission is documented for the first time while its legacy of nationalist bitterness and disenchantment is graphically described. A major focus of this pioneering study is the uneasy relationship between the Northern Irish state in the 1920s and 1930s and the Catholic minority which found itself increasingly marginalised by Unionist hostility apparent Dublin abandonment and Whitehall indifference. The author concludes that by 1940 the northern nationalists had become effectively 'a state within a state' and the dragon's teeth of the future 'Troubles' had been sown.
