Internally with some light scattered foxing as is common in imprints of the era with some dampstaining to the inner margins of the first fifty pages; else clean and unmarked. Collating x 11-335 1 errata 4: complete including thirteen plates. The most popular botany textbook of its time and the first book by education activists Phelps the present is surprisingly scarce in trade. It last appeared at auction in 1989 and this is presently the only copy on the market. A pioneer in American women's education Almira Phelps began her career tutoring students of the all-male Middlebury College in science mathematics and philosophy. "This experience illustrated the disparity between education available for men and for women and Almira spent the rest of her life fighting for more educational opportunities for females" History of American Women. Joining forces with her sister Emma Willard the founder of the Troy Female Seminary in New York Phelps began to teach rigorous humanities and science courses in addition to lecturing publicly on behalf of women's rights for equal education. Phelps established herself as a frontrunner in the field publishing ten books on the education of women. The present work is the first of these and it brought her into dialogue with earlier British women citizen-scientists such as Priscilla Wakefield and Jane Marcet. Like her predecessors Phelps wanted to make the study of botanical science accessible to readers bringing them into contact with the field's vocabularies and practices and encouraging them to find opportunities for study in the areas around them. Yet her book pushed this movement to the next level as it was designed specifically for the use of advanced schools. To this end it is designed for classroom instruction includes a note To Teachers and provides at rear sections on Vocabulary Analysis and a functional index. Ultimately Familiar Lectures on Botany made it possible for instructors -- especially women -- to improve the method and practice of their lessons by referring to Phelps' own tried and true methods. And it made botanical education of a more rigorous kind available to a new generation of students. Ogilvie's Women in Science 147. History of American Women. H. and F.J. Huntington unknown books

Unrecorded imprint. It is possible that this notice with the place and date left blank. was for a traveling religious tableau and lecture to be undertaken perhaps in the North to raise money for African missionaries for there seems to be a thread of African-related work suggested in the choice of the men included. After describing the tableaux depicting various elements in the Life of Moses there is scheduled a homage made to two recently dead Baptist Preachers: Edenborough G. Corprew who died in Portsmouth Virginia and Solomon Cosby a Danville Virginia native who died in Abeokuta West Africa aged 31. Both men died in 1881.Also mentioned in the broadside is John Jasper 1812–1901 another prominent Virginia Baptist Preacher best remembered for his sermon The Sun Do Move which expressed his deep faith in God through the imagery of a flat Earth around which the sun rotates. Finally British Baptist Charles Spurgeon is mentioned. Spurgeon a prominent abolitionist known as the “Prince of Preachers” never came to the United States but had a close relationship with Thomas Lewis Johnson the Virginian author of: Africa for Christ. Twenty-Eight Years a Slave—Johnson studied for two years in the college that Spurgeon founded named posthumously Spurgeon College before leaving for his two-year stint in the Cameroons. On his return a sick and grieving widower Spurgeon was one of the many British Baptists who helped him. S.l.:: s.n.,, 1882-1900. unknown

Stratford-on-Avon. He is considered the greatest playwright who ever lived. Life His father John Shakespeare was successful in the leather business during Shakespeare's early childhood but later met with financial difficulties. During his prosperous years his father was also involved in municipal affairs holding the offices of alderman and bailiff during the 1560s. While little is known of Shakespeare's boyhood he probably attended the grammar school in Stratford where he would have been educated in the classics particularly Latin grammar and literature. Whatever the veracity of Ben Jonson's famous comment that Shakespeare had "small Latine and less Greeke" much of his work clearly depends on a knowledge of Roman comedy ancient history and classical mythology. In 1582 Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway eight years his senior and pregnant at the time of the marriage. . 1965. Dell Publishing paperback

Austin Troy a seasoned expert in urban environmental management explains for general readers how a city with a high "urban energy metabolism"—that is a city that needs large amounts of energy in order to function—will be at a competitive disadvantage in the future. He explores why cities have different energy metabolisms and discusses an array of innovative approaches to the problems of expensive energy consumption. Troy looks at dozens of cities and suburbs in Europe and the United States—from Los Angeles to Copenhagen Denver to the Swedish urban redevelopment project Hammarby Sjöstad—to understand the diverse factors that affect their energy use: behavior climate water supply building quality transportation and others. He then assesses some of the most imaginative solutions that cities have proposed among them green building energy-efficient neighborhoods symbiotic infrastructure congestion pricing transit-oriented development and water conservation. To conclude the author addresses planning and policy approaches that can bring about change and transform the best ideas into real solutions. 20110307 . 2012. 0300162316 . From Arthur Schlesinger's work in John Kennedy's campaign and administration to Daniel Patrick Moynihan's role as the Democrat in the Nixon White House through Sidney Blumenthal's efforts to secure intellectual support for a scandal-plagued Bill Clinton every president since 1960 has had to address the question of intellectual support. Using both popular sources and some never before used archived material Intellectuals and the American Presidency looks at the advisers who served as liaisons to the academic community the presidents' views of those intellectuals and how they fit in with the presidents' plans. In this bipartisan study political insider Tevi Troy analyzes how American presidents have used intellectuals to shape their images and advance their agendas. . 2002. 0742508250 . ref. 60219Paris: Creation S.F.I.P.E. 1943. Original large colour lithographic map of the world on Mercator's projection 68.5 x 151 cm. Old folds and closed tears professionally repaired retouched and laid onto linen. Rare. Much in the manner of Lucien Boucher showing French airways around the world the poster was produced at the height of WW2 after the surrender of France and the subsequent German invasion of the Vichy zone in November 1942. The global vision and expressive sub-title stand clearly in defiance of France's domestic woes. André Troy better known just as Troy this poster signed in the lithograph "TROY 43" was a French artist and illustrator who produced at least one poster for Air France in 1936 and illustrated two or three of their promotional brochures during the late 1940s and early 1950s. He also illustrated book covers and a number of movie posters during the 40s e.g. "Six petites filles en blanc" 1943 and "Un de nos avions n'est pas rentré" 1946 originally "One of our aircraft is missing" Michael Powell 1942. 1520Incisione a bulino mm 417x290. 1613Very Good to Near Fine Condition/None. CottonManufacturing Two Massive Bound Ledgers for Troy Cotton & Woolen Manufactory Fall River Massachusetts 1885-1887 1893-1897 16 x 11.5 inches 360 & 552pp. Beautiful custom bound ledgers. Both in full leather; one with suede with beautiful stamping and gilt second full leather with intricate gilt stamping. Light rubbing and edge wear. Tight binding and clean interior. Great exemplars of late 19th century business ledgers bound by N.R. Earl. Very Good to Near Fine Condition. I fully admit to having a soft spot for business ledgers and these two are some of the best we have handled. Not only are they beautiful but they also present a window into post-civil war northern manufacturing of an exclusive southern product--cotton. The Troy Cotton & Woolen Manufactory Company was founded in 1813 in what Fall River is now Massachusetts. The town was known as Troy between 1804-1834 hence the name of the company. Located over the uppermost falls of the Quequechan River Troy Cotton was the second textile mill on the Quequechan. Fall River's geography and location with convenient access to waterpower and port facilities helped propel the city into one of the centers of American textile manufacturing. These ledgers provide a unique window into the triangular structure of the cotton industry--i.e. the sourcing of raw cotton from slave-free southern plantations by northern textile mills and the eventual sale of resulting cloth to world markets. Before the Civil War cotton sugar and tobacco were the basis for a thriving American economy built on the backs of slave labor. By 1870 sharecroppers small farmers and plantation owners in the American South produced more cotton than the slave laborers had in 1860 a trend that lasted into the early 1900's. The earliest ledger commencing June 1885 features a daily tally of all goods bought and sold by the Troy Cotton & Woolen Manufactory thru May 1887. Raw cotton is supplied by scores of suppliers and factors brokers working in major port cities Mobile and New Orleans plus many smaller cities as Dawson GA Corsican TX Charlotte NC Louisville KY Hillsboro TX etc. Additional products purchased by Troy Cotton includes spinners brooms lumber grain cards bagging paid labor new machinery printing supplies and much more. The second ledger commencing October 1892 provides a full accounting of Troy Cotton & Woolen Manufactory thru June 1897. Ledger notations include stock balances real estate holdings cash on hand construction costs and additional P & L entries. Specific line-item expenditures include rent repairs interest gas oil brokerage fees and labor costs. Customers buying finished products were located in Boston Chicago Staten Island Philadelphia Baltimore Providence New York City Hartford etc. The company operated until 1929 with their various buildings occupied by businesses including those in the garment industry. Troy Cotton & Woolen Manufactory buildings were demolished in the 1960s as part of urban renewal and to make way for Interstate 195. A small grouping of laid in ephemera include 30 dividend receipts from 1874 three $500 stock shares 1924 1925 and 1935 a 1924 receipt for stock shares plus a 20-page 1909 mortgage deed of trust.
