During my childhood days I used to play among the ruins of Philadelphia (modern Alasehir). I breathed in the historical atmosphere of Philadelphia, feeling its past and living together with this cultural heritage. I believe that historical settlements are not only ruins but are also the memory of our cultural genes. Furthermore, I strongly feel that the memory and cultural genes of a city manifests itself in a style of life we call "tradition". We may find traces of the past in the language we speak, in our methods of production or in our traditions. However, the place where true memory is hidden is in historical buildings, artifacts and coins. I started collecting the coins of Philadelphia in 1995. I felt that I owed my duty of loyalty to this city. I started collecting with these feelings. I thought I would reach the city's memory in this way. Then, I came to the conclusion that it would be proper to consider the city's history together with its surroundings, and I expanded my collection to include the Lydia and Phrygia regions. Today, an important part of the coinage from Philadelphia are in my collection. Besides the coins of Philadelphia, the majority of the coins which belonged to other cities in Lydia are also in my collection. With this publication, I have presented the coins in my collection to the academia. Now, it is the scientists who will reveal Philadelphia's memory and cultural genes. I believe I have fulfilled my duty loyally. Last but not least, I would like to thank Oguz Tekin and Arif Yaci who prepared the catalog. This catalog is the eleventh volume of the SNG Turkey Project and is part of the Çetin Erdem Collection. Çetin Erdem, the collector, is a lawyer living in the town of Sarigöl in the Manisa Province. All the coins were bought between the years of 1995-2016 by himself, in Sarigöl, where he lives. There are three historical sites which are nearby, these are Sardis, Philadelphia and Thyateira. We would like to express our gratitude to Mr. Erdem, collector, who facilitated our work during the preparation of our catalog. We would like to thank Michel Amandry and Aliye Erol Özdizbay who revised the catalog. We would also like to thank Ahmet Boratav of Ege Publications for his support for the publication; our special thanks go to Ms. Hülya Tokmak for her layout work. Travelogues have the function of a cultural mirror for the places in the period they were written. Being a vivid description of time and space, reflecting the structure of the period in which they were written, gives us the opportunity to look at history from a different perspective. In the past, traveling was an event in itself. Seas, mountains, and deserts were crossed, new places and people were met. Whether the traveler's writings are long or short, from ancient Troia to Troy at the beginning of the 20th century, what is written, drawn, observed, and perceived about the city and region are important documents. This book is a study on the evaluation of Troy interpretations in the works written by 100 important travelers who came to the Troy region, and each exhibited different characteristics from different perspectives. "An attempt to tell the history of journeys as accurately and fully as can be done in a single volume" It draws on a vast primary source material never before greatly available to researchers. It reflects no point of view other than an academic s obligation to be as objective and fair as possible. It is written to be read as a reference source book by anyone from an academic to a high school student and especially by those in between. Rüstam Aslan was born in 1965 in Sivas, Turkey and graduated from the Istanbul University, Dept. of Prehistory, and obtained his PhD. in 2006 in Prehistoric Archaeology from the University of Tubingen (Germany), studying with Prof. Dr. Manfred Korfmann. He then started his academic career at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (Turkey) and currently continues to teach at the University as a professor. Since 1988 he has been a member of the excavations team at Troy, and between 2007 and 2011 he directed a survey project on the Troad that focused on recording and mapping the Bronze Age Settlements System around Troy. In 2013, he became Director of the Troy Excavations in northwest Turkey. His recent seminars have dealt with archaeological topography of the Troad and the Archaeology of Troy. He has published over 100 scientific papers and 12 books.

Enez is situated on the North coast of the Aegean Sea, by the Turkish-Greek border, where Meriç, the most important river of Thrace, joins the sea. Enez, is located within an extremely important geographical area. It is surrounded by extraordinary beauties. This lovely town of Edirne, with its sunflowers- the symbols of the Thracian plains; with seafood-gift from the Aegean; with its harbor, which embraced different civilizations; with its wetlands protected by the river Meriç; with its rice; with its mountain of Hisarlidag, reaching the sky; and with its many other kinds of opulence, it is one of the most special places in our land, Turkey. In order to unearth the history of the city named Ainos in antiquity, we, as the University of Istanbul, have conducted many highly important archaeological excavations, so far. Other than this very important academic relationship between Enez, and the University of Istanbul, there also exists a very important relationship of neighbourhood. Istanbul University's Prof. Dr. Nazim Terzioglu Education, Culture, and Sports facility located in Enez, created an important bond between the staff of Istanbul University, and Enez. Every year hundreds of academic, and administrative staff, and also the students of the University of Istanbul, spend their summer vacations at this facility. This cute town enchant them with its history, and with its natural beauty. I am glad to announce here that these facilites have to capacity to serve our University staff, not only through the summer months, but throughout the year, as a result of the restoration work we have undertaken during the year 2009-2012. In sum, we shall be together with the people of Enez through all seasons. Besides, the University staff would not go to Enez for the purpose of spending their summer vacations only, but they would go to Enez to participate in other Istanbul University functions such as academic activites; summer, and winter schools; on the job training; contiunous training; and life-long training. With the responsibility of having a social facility in this culturally, geographically, and economically important region, it is our utmost duty to present this book to you. This book, which aims to introduce the natural, and the cultural features of Enez; to publicize its special features; to draw attention to its ecological, and sociological values, is a gift from our university to the public at large.

It has been some 140 years now that actual finds from the ancient city of Troy-that city near the Dardanelles-that Troia around which was spun the famed epic of Homer's Illiad-appeared to accompany and magnify the myth. The finds unearthed there-many representing buried treasures-are today widely scattered, with principal groups, however, now found housed in only (!) eight different museums. The goal of this work is to bring the individual pieces together, to verify their common origin, to consider their purpose, and to place them into an accurate chronological perspective-not only within the strata of the site itself, but throughout the Bronze Age world that helped create them. These objects demonstrate how developed the aesthetic sensibilities of our ancestors living some 4500 years ago really were, and how highly developed the craft of their goldsmiths was at the time. Geographical patterns of influence as well as the import of semiprecious stones and other raw materials stress the far-reaching trade and significance of the Trojans. A very heavy volume.
