2007Best.-Nr. 201323Windsor Ontario: Art Gallery of Windsor 2007. Hardcover. VG. Grey DJ with white and black lettering and bw illustration; beige boards with black lettering; 132 pp.; richly illustrated. Text in English and French. "In 1951 Yousuf Karsh accepted a Ford commission to photograph workers for use in the carmaker's advertising and annual reports. While not the subjects normally associated with the internationally-renowned photographer the workers at the Ford Motor Company and Atlas Steels in Ontario and Sharon Steel in Pennsylvania are portrayed with the same luminsoity as his celebrity portraits. But some were not published. Considering them provocative and suggestive Ford rejected many of the photographs including the cover image shown here. In retrospect these portraits reveal Karsh's uncanny ability to seize the individuality of each of his subjects through a meticulous attention to detail and great technical prowess."-- Jacket. An innovative study of labor relations particularly the interactions of recruitment agents and migrant workers in the mining concessions of Wassa Gold Coast Colony 1879 to 1909. Recent years have seen renewed interest in the historical study of labor in Africa. Unlike those of the past these new studies are rooted in the recognition of Africa's dynamic expansive and productive informal sector. While this book focuses on one of West Africa's earliest large-scale industries namely the Wassa gold mines in the southwest Gold Coast it is not solely concerned with the traditional working class. Rather it explores the plurality oflabor relations that characterized the mining concessions during the period 1879 to 1909 including the presence of migrants from various parts of West Africa as well as casual and tributary laborers both male and female. In capturing the phenomenon of labor mobility as it played out in Wassa Mediators Contract Men and Colonial Capital presents one of the fullest accounts of the labor agents who regularly brought groups of migrant laborers to the mines. The narrative discusses these agents' means of employment and roles in the informalization and indentureship of labor; in addition it explores the regional dynamics of the recruitment machinery and confronts issues of coercion and choice. Scholars interested in African history global labor history economic history and women's work in Africa will find much of value in this innovative study. Best.-Nr. 1246He writes "Dear Madam I was sorry not to see you in Paris before I left but I would have been even more sorry if you had shortened your vacation in Aix to be at that last meeting on the rue Lincoln. I left all necessary instructions first to your trusted Cabioch and then to Mrs. Joubert and I left town without any worry on the outcome of our current projects. I hope you were somehow entertained in Aix and that you will get some rest now in your small country house. For me I have settled down for the time being at the Mont d'Arbois above Niegeve. I hope I am able "to hold out" for at least ten days. Then I'll spend some time at the beach to try and get "a shot in the arm" somewhere around Le Touquet before going back to the rue de Bellechasse. Until then please trust dear Madam in my very friendly sympathy." He signs "A.M. Cassandre unknown books

1788Best.-Nr. 816241788. Charges of Immorality and Fornication Against the Lord High Chancellor Cassandra. Thurlow Edward 1731-1806 1st Baron Thurlow. A Letter to the Bishop of London. Containing a Charge of Fornication Against Edward Lord Thurlow Lord High Chancellor of England. With His Lordship's de bene esse Defence. London: Printed for the Author; and Sold by Ridgway 1787. 50 pp. Octavo 8-1/4" x 5". Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet in later plain wrappers. Light soiling and edgewear to wrappers moderate toning to interior light foxing in a few places light soiling and faint offsetting to title page. $450. Only edition. Thurlow was a lawyer and Conservative politician who served as Lord High Chancellor for fourteen years. He was known not only for his loyalty to George III and skill in the courtroom but as the father of a number of illegitimate children. This wide-ranging polemic accuses him of fornication with a young woman named Mary Edmonds anticipates his defense and then moves on to a discussion of tax policy and the Test Acts. It draws on various classical biblical and legal authorities such as Blackstone to support its assertions. The pseudonym is likely a reference to the Cassandra of Greek mythology. The ESTC assigns this pamphlet a provisional date of 1788 but a contemporary review appeared in a 1787 issue of The Monthly Review describing it as a "strange.performance" but noting that the editors were certainly "much amused."
